That’s That Sabrina Carpenter, Superstar: 10 Steps She Took to Score Her Breakthrough

From her Disney Channel days to opening for Taylor Swift to the bow of “Espresso,” here’s how Carpenter has joined pop’s A-list.

This weekend, Sabrina Carpenter will be the musical guest on the season finale of Saturday Night Live, and she will enter Studio 8H on a high: her current single, “Espresso,” has spent four straight weeks in the top 10 of the Hot 100 chart after logging the best debut of the pop star’s career, getting meme’d in countless ways and setting off dance parties at Coachella. The SNL booking was a no-brainer: Carpenter is one of the hottest names in mainstream music, with the success of “Espresso” crystallizing the enthusiasm around the singer-songwriter’s particular brand of pop.

While plenty of listeners have become fans of Carpenter thanks to “Espresso,” the singer’s journey toward this moment has been years in the making, with multiple albums, record labels, tour dates around the world and singles pre-dating this recent explosion. At 25 years old, Carpenter has a bright future ahead of her as a mainstream mainstay — but she’s also a veteran, with years of experience in the spotlight and multiple full-lengths that allowed her to hone her sound and musical personality. As it stands, her past is a fascinating case study in how a former child star can make the leap to the A-list, thanks in part to the right support system, savvy collaborator choices, industry opportunities and damn good pop music.

So how exactly did Carpenter make her current leap and become an in-demand pop presence? As we enter the summer of “Espresso,” here are the 10 steps that Sabrina Carpenter has taken to become a new-school star.

Nicki Minaj’s Pink Friday 2 World Tour Is Already the Highest Grossing Rap Tour for a Woman — and It Isn’t Over Yet

Nicki Minaj wrapped the North American leg of the Pink Friday 2 World Tour earlier this week. Not only did it deliver the biggest grosses of her career, it sets a new high mark among women in hip-hop. According to figures reported to Billboard Boxscore, the Pink Friday 2 World Tour grossed $67 million and sold 439,000 tickets, making it the highest grossing and bestselling rap tour by a woman in Boxscore history.

Minaj launched the tour on March 1 in Oakland, Calif., bringing in $2.3 million from 14,000 tickets. That was the first of 34 shows in American and Canadian arenas, before closing up on May 13 in Oklahoma City.

The Pink Friday 2 routing included four double-headers, providing $3 million-plus grosses in Atlanta, Boston, Brooklyn, Chicago and Toronto. Two nights at Brooklyn’s Barclays Center on April 4 and May 1 proved the biggest, with $4.3 million and 28,100 tickets.

Trending on Billboard

In addition to her two Brooklyn plays, Minaj also performed at Manhattan’s Madison Square Garden and the Prudential Center in New Jersey. Combined, those four NYC-area shows brought in $9.3 million and sold more than 54,000 tickets, with the MSG show claiming honors as the single highest grossing show of the tour so far.

The Pink Friday 2 World Tour was tracking to become Minaj’s biggest from opening night. Throughout the 34-date North American leg, the trek averaged just under $2 million and 13,000 per night. That’s nearly triple the pace of 2012’s Pink Friday: Reoloaded Tour ($776,000) and 2015-16’s The Pinkprint Tour ($657,000).

In November, Billboard published a list of the highest grossing rap artists of all time, with Minaj as the only woman at No. 20. With updated grosses from the Pink Friday 2 World Tour, she climbs to No. 11.

Still, Minaj’s record-setting trek arrives amid a particularly fruitful time for rap tours, and especially so among women. The Pink Friday 2 World Tour re-writes a record set by Doja Cat just five months ago, when The Scarlet Tour became the top rap tour among women acts with $37.3 million in the bank. Earlier this week, Megan Thee Stallion kicked off an arena tour of her own, launching the Hot Girl Summer Tour in Minneapolis. And in July, Missy Elliott – the first woman in hip-hop to be inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame – will set out on the Out of this World: The Missy Elliott Experience Tour. It will be her first headlining tour in a pioneering career that spans almost 30 years.

The Pink Friday 2 World Tour isn’t done bringing in business yet. Minaj will kickstart the tour’s European leg next week, with a show at Ziggo Dome in Amsterdam on May 23. In addition to a bevy of festival shows, she’ll play 15 headline dates that could add another $10 million to $20 million to the tour’s record-setting total. At $93.9 million and 911,000 in reported career grosses and attendance, it’ll all but certainly put Minaj over $100 million and 1 million tickets.

UMG CEO Lucian Grainge’s $128M 2023 Pay Package Approved by Shareholders

Universal Music Group (UMG) shareholders approved CEO Lucian Grainge‘s 138.8 million euros ($128 million) compensation package from 2023 in a nonbinding advisory vote at the company’s annual general meeting in The Netherlands on Thursday (May 16).

A majority of investors voted to approve all proposals up for a vote this year, including the reappointment of billionaire Bill Ackman, Cyrille Bollore and others as non-executive directors despite criticism from shareholder advisory groups Glass Lewis, who last month called UMG’s pay practices excessive and said the board lacked independence.

Advisory shareholder votes like these are only advisory and not enforceable, but they are closely watched as indicators of investors’ feelings on a company’s pay policies and the people who make up their boards. Anytime a significant percentage of investors expresses disapproval, which Glass Lewis defines as 20% or more, directors consult with shareholders about how to make internal changes to address their concerns.

Investors in Live Nation and Cumulus Media used recent shareholder meetings to vote their disapproval of those companies’ CEO pay packages.

UMG did not immediately disclose the percentage of votes cast in support of the proposals at this year’s annual meeting, which was livestreamed only to registered shareholders. Last year, a slim majority of UMG investors representing roughly 59% of shares voted in approval of UMG’s remuneration policy, which details the 2023 compensation packages paid out to Grainge and deputy CEO Vincent Vallejo.

About 58% of UMG’s voting shares are collectively held by Ackman’s Pershing Square Capital Management, Tencent, Bollore and Vivendi. Last year, all four shareholders voted to approve UMG’s remuneration policy.

Grainge’s total 2023 compensation is 138,814,000 euros, or $128,264,000 based on a monthly average foreign exchange rate of 0.924. In 2022, he was the third highest-paid music executive, having made total compensation of 47.3 million euros ($49.7 million) thanks to a 28.8 million euros ($30.3 million) performance bonus in addition to a base salary of 15.4 million euros ($16.2 million).

In 2023, Grainge had a base salary of 7.5 million euros (just over $8 million) and bonus of 15.16 million euros (nearly $16.3 million), and a one-time transition equity award worth 92,406,852 euros (roughly $100 million). That award was paid out in half in restricted stock units and half in performance stock options. The performance stock options vest over the coming five years and can only be excised once UMG’s stock hits certain thresholds.

Co-Defendants Dropped From Rodney Lil Rod’ Jones’ Sexual Abuse Lawsuit Against Diddy

Music producer Rodney “Lil Rod” Jones, one of numerous alleged victims who have accused Sean “Diddy” Combs of acts of sexual violence and other abuses, has dropped multiple high-profile defendants from a lawsuit he filed against the Bad Boy mogul in February.

According to Hip Hop DX, the list of defendants in Jones’ lawsuit initially included Universal Music Group and its chairman Sir Lucian Grainge, who the suit alleged “aided and abetted” Diddy in his alleged sexual abuse. But those names have been withdrawn from the filing and the claims against them and against Motown Recordings have been dismissed with prejudice, meaning claims against them cannot be refiled.

Jones’ legal representation was pretty vague on why Grainge and the two music companies were dropped from the suit, although the now-former defendants had all filed motions to have their cases dismissed.

“All of the claims against Grainge, Motown and UMG Recordings (the ‘UMG Defendants’) in the [second amended complaint] are lacking in any legally cognizable basis,” the filing read. “Every claim is premised on the untenable strict liability theory that when one enters into a commercial contract, the payor under that contract becomes liable for anything that the recipient of payment does with the payment.” Apparently, Jones’ attorneys eventually agreed.

From Hip Hop DX:

Lil Rod’s attorney Tyrone Blackburn said in a sworn declaration filed in court: “Based on my examination of all of the papers submitted in support of both motions to dismiss, which addressed the issues I had, I have concluded that there is no legal basis for the claims and allegations that were made against the UMG Defendants.”

He added: “As such, I have determined that the proper course of action is for all of the claims and all of the allegations to be withdrawn immediately.”

It’s worth noting that UMG has also petitioned to be removed from a lawsuit filed by another Diddy accuser identified as Jane Doe, and that filing also appears to make the core argument that the company isn’t responsible for anything Diddy did, if he did it.

“The Complaint’s allegations, if true, are certainly disturbing,” the filing read. “Plaintiff makes no allegation supporting vicarious liability for battery or assault (nor could she).

“Plaintiff’s NIED [negligent infliction of emotional distress] claim also fails because she has not alleged any duty owed to her by UMGR, and nowhere in Plaintiff’s Complaint does she allege that UMGR’s conduct was extreme and outrageous, as she is required to do as a matter of legal sufficiency,” it continued.

As much as Diddy has been trying to play it cool online, there is no hiding the fact that he is drowning in scandals, legal woes and professional uncertainty, and one can imagine there will be more people close to him who will either need to jump ship or sink right along with him.

House of the Dragon

We’re just a few weeks away from once again getting swept up in the fantasy world of violence, dragons and weird incest when House of the Dragon premiers on HBO. To further amp up anticipation, we’ve gotten a new trailer showing us what we can expect in the second season of the hit HBO series.

Picking up where Season 1 left off, we see that King Aegon sits upon on the iron throne as he plots his revenge on his enemies while a civil war seems to be brewing amongst the Targaryns. Fans were asked to chose between the Black and Green councils just a few months ago. With King Aegon and Queen Rhaenyra ready to duke it out for the Iron Throne, Daemon Targaryen seems to be calculating his next move while dragons run rampant and war is on the horizon.

Though we all know how this ends thanks to the events of Game of Thrones (that last season was still trash), this new season of House of the Dragon promises to be filled with violence, plot twists, and of course, lots of fire breathing dragon action.

We. Can’t. Wait.

Check out the trailer for the second season of House of the Dragon, and let us know what your expectations are in the comments section below.

At one point in the clip, released on Thursday (May 16), Sims versions of Travis Kelce and his brother Jason Kelce are recording an episode of their New Heights podcast, when Taylor Swift appears at the door waving to her boyfriend Travis. The “Karma” singer and the Kansas City Chiefs tight end then hop on a private jet and head to their next destination.

The scene is fitting, as Kelce has been jetting around with Swift during the European leg of her massive Eras tour. Travis attended Swift’s final Paris concert at La Defense Arena on Sunday (May 12), where fan cameras captured him dancing along to the show with suitemates Gigi Hadid and Bradley Cooper.

The video also playfully clapped back at Chiefs kicker Harrison Butker, who went viral for his misogynistic comments during his commencement speech at Benedictine College in Kansas Saturday (May 11). In response to his claim that being a homemaker is “one of the most important titles of all” for women, the LA Chargers responded by having him fittingly working hard in the home kitchen in the Sims world. “For the ladies present today, congratulations on an amazing accomplishment. I want to speak directly to you briefly, because I think it is you, the women, who have had the most diabolical lies told to you,” Butker began at one point during his 20-minute speech. “How many of you are sitting here now, about to cross this stage, and are thinking about all of the promotions and titles you are going to get in your career?”

He continued, “Some of you may go on to lead successful careers in the world, but I would venture to guess that the majority of you are most excited about your marriage and the children you will bring into this world. I can tell you that my beautiful wife, Isabelle, would be the first to say her life truly started when she started living her vocation as a wife and as a mother. […] Isabelle’s dream of having a career might not have come true, but if you ask her today if she has any regrets on her decision, she would laugh out loud without hesitation, and say, ‘Heck no.’”

Billboard has reached out to the Chiefs and NFL for comment.

Biden & Trump Aiming To Debate In June, With Caveats

President Joe Biden and Donald Trump may be facing off in a debate as early as this summer, but there may be some obstacles due to a request for new rules.

According to reports, President Joe Biden has signaled that he’s ready to debate Donald Trump at least twice before the elections take place in November and as early as June. These wishes were expressed in a letter sent by Biden’s reelection campaign committee to the Commission on Presidential Debates. However, President Biden has expressed in the letter that he would decline to take part in the three scheduled general debates which were set for Sept. 16, Oct. 1 and Oct. 9. The letter also cites that the commission “was unable or unwilling to enforce the rules in the 2020 debates.” It also blasted the commission for allowing Trump to take part in that debate while ill – Trump would later declare that he had tested positive for COVID-19.

The decision is a bold departure for President Biden, who has dedicated his career to preserving the institutions of the nation’s government. The letter, signed by campaign chair Jennifer O’Malley Dillon, also proposes negotiating with television networks like ABC, NBC, and Telemundo directly to host that first debate and a second “in early September at the start of the fall campaign season, early enough to influence early voting, but not so late as to require the candidates to leave the campaign trail in the critical late September and October period,” O’Malley Dillon writes. They also call for new rules such as the cutting of microphones when a candidate goes over and no in-house audiences.

The potential new rules would be a major sticking point for Trump, who played to the audience in his debate appearances. Susie Wiles and Chris LaCivita, representatives for Trump are in accord with avoiding the Commission on Presidential Debates, issuing their statement on May 1: “We must host debates earlier than ever before,” they said. “Again, we call on every television network in America that wishes to host a debate to extend an invitation to our campaign and we will gladly negotiate with the Biden campaign, with or without the stubborn Presidential Debates Commission.” They reason that Biden is slower than in 2020 mentally, and Trump’s lead in key battleground states in the polls.

DJ Akademiks Responds To Rape & Defamation Lawsuit: “It’s A Shakedown”

HipHopWired Featured Video

DJ Akademiks

Source: YouTube / Youtube

On Tuesday, May 14, social media erupted when it was reported that DJ Akademiks had been hit with a rape and defamation lawsuit by his ex-girlfriend, Fauziya Abashe, who accused the social media personality and two of his friends of drugging and raping her.

Though Akademiks remained mum throughout most of the day, he finally took to his channel and addressed the situation. “Whatever this is it will be handled in the court room.” Proclaiming his innocence while calling the lawsuit a “civil situation” and added, “It’s a shakedown. This is a money tree situation.” DJ Akademiks didn’t seem too worried about the outcome of this lawsuit as he’s basically addressed it in the past on his channel.

He also brought up the fact that when the alleged incident occurred, he gave the security footage to the police who then decided that there was no evidence of wrongdoing.

“I’m not even hiding and ducking from a situation or ducking from the narrative that happened. I pretty much told everything, and also I told the truth,” he said. “The police came, they looked, we gave them everything. Pretty much everything is documented, caught on videotape. They got to see it with their own two eyes. We’re officially clear, we could not bring any criminal charges. [I] are not criminally liable but also anybody else in the situation was also cleared.”

He also brought up the fact that Abashe hired Tyrone Blackburn, who Akademiks had been talking about since he brought a lawsuit against P. Diddy on behalf of Lil Rod. Feeling that Blackburn had it in for him, Akademiks feels this is just more proof that the entire lawsuit is just one big money grab as they’ve been sitting on this case for months before finally pulling the trigger.

Regardless of who y’all think is telling the truth here, one thing’s for sure, DJ Akademiks doesn’t seem fazed by the lawsuit and says he’d rather pay more to clear his name than to make the case go away as it would make him seem guilty.

Check out his response to the rape allegations, and let us know your thoughts on it in the comments section below.
