Lainey Wilson, Chris Stapleton & More Record-Setters at 2024 ACM Awards

Lainey Wilson and Chris Stapleton were the top winners at the 2024 Academy of Country Music Awards, which were presented on Thursday (May 16) at Ford Center at The Star in Frisco, Texas.

Stapleton won four awards, more than anyone else, but Wilson won the top prize, entertainer of the year. Luke Combs and Jordan Davis each won two awards. (Under ACM rules, artists can win two awards in a few categories – one as an artist and one as producer or songwriter.)

Morgan Wallen was shut out, despite receiving six nods.

Trending on Billboard

Wilson won entertainer of the year two years after winning the ACM Award for new female artist of the year. That’s the fastest climb from a new artist award to entertainer of the year at the ACMs since The Chicks, then called Dixie Chicks, also made the advance in just two years. That female trio was named new group or duo in 1999 and won entertainer of the year in 2001.

Wilson thus achieves what the ACM calls the Triple Crown. She won new female artist of the year two years ago and female artist of the year last year. Wilson repeated in the latter category this year. She’s the first artist to win back-to-back awards in this category since Maren Morris in 2020-21.

Wilson also won music event of the year for the second year in a row. She won this year as a featured artist on Jelly Roll’s “Save Me.” She won last year as a featured artist on Hardy’s “Wait in the Truck.”

Stapleton won album of the year for the fourth time, a total equaled or exceeded only by Miranda Lambert, who has won five times in the category. Lambert won with five consecutive studio albums. Stapleton has won with four of his five solo studio albums. He missed only when From a Room, Vol. 2 lost to Kacey Musgraves’ Golden Hour. (He won two awards in this category, one as artist and one as co-producer.)

Stapleton won male artist of the year for the fourth time, just one shy of the all-time record of five wins shared by Merle Haggard, Brad Paisley and George Strait. Stapleton also won artist-songwriter of the year in the second year it was presented. Hardy was the inaugural winner last year. These awards up Stapleton’s ACM Awards trophy count to 20.

Combs’ “Fast Car” won single of the year. The crossover smash reached No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100. It’s the fourth winner in that category to reach No. 1 on No. 2 on Billboard’s flagship singles chart, following Glen Campbell’s “Rhinestone Cowboy” (the 1976 winner; No. 1); Kenny Rogers and Dolly Parton’s “Islands in the Stream” (the 1984 winner; No. 1) and Lady A’s “Need You Now” (the 2010 winner, No. 2). Combs won two awards for the single, as artist and co-producer.

But Tracy Chapman did not win song of the year for writing “Fast Car,” as was expected. The Jordan Davis hit “Next Thing You Know” won instead in that category. Davis co-wrote the song with Chase McGill, Greylan James and Josh Osborne. It’s the second win in this category for Osborne, who co-wrote the Old Dominion hit “One Man Band,” which won four years ago. (Davis won two awards in this category – one as artist and one as a cowriter.)

Old Dominion won group of the year for the seventh year in a row. That equals Rascal Flatts’ run of seven consecutive wins from 2003-09.

Dan + Shay won duo of the year for the fourth time, equaling Brothers Osborne’s four-year reign for the recent ACM record. The all-time record is held by Brooks & Dunn and The Judds, with 16 wins.

Megan Moroney won new female artist of the year, while Nate Smith won new male artist of the year. Both were also nominated in those categories last year, but lost to Hailey Whitters and Zach Bryan, respectively. ACM rules give artists two attempts to take home the award.

Tigirlily Gold won in the revived category of new duo or group of the year. The award was last presented five years ago to LANCO. Tigirlily Gold, which consists of sisters Kendra and Krista Slaubaugh, is the second sister duo to win in this category. The first was The Kinleys, which consisted of Heather and Jennifer Kinley. They won in 1998. (The Kinleys were identical twins. The sisters of Tigirlily Gold are about 2-1/2 years apart in age.)

Jessie Jo Dillon won songwriter of the year. She’s the third woman to win in that category, following Hillary Lindsey (a three-time winner) and Lori McKenna.” Dillon’s win was no surprise. She was nominated for songwriter of the year, non-classical at the Grammy Awards earlier this year.

Parker McCollum’s “Burn It Down” won visual media of the year. Two years ago, McCollum won ACM new male artist of the year.

The show was produced by Dick Clark Productions (DCP). DCP is owned by Penske Media Eldridge, a Penske Media Corporation (PMC) subsidiary and joint venture between PMC and Eldridge. PMC is the parent company of Billboard.

Reba McEntire Closes out the 2024 ACM Awards With Blazing Performance of ‘I Can’t’

Reba McEntire brought the house down — and almost burnt it down, too — with the final performance of the night at the 2024 ACM Awards Thursday night (May 16), singing a blazing rendition of her new single “I Can’t.”

Joined by a stunning choir of gospel singers, the 69-year-old singer — who also served as the night’s host — passionately belted the lyrics to her latest track while staring down the camera, her red hair matching the curtain of pyrotechnic flames that sprung to life behind her. “I can’t row you across right now, I’m too busy building a bridge,” she sang. “I can’t throw a line right now, I’m too busy trying to live.”

The performance earned a standing ovation from Miranda Lambert, Chris Stapleton and more stars in the audience at Ford Center at the Star in Frisco, Texas. Before exiting the stage, the country icon also announced that she’d be returning to host the 2025 ACMs.

The show comes just over a week after McEntire debuted “I Can’t” on The Voice, on which she’s currently serving her second season as a coach.

This year’s ceremony was produced by Dick Clark Productions and streamed live by Prime Video. Its other performers included Lainey Wilson — who later on won entertainer of the year — Jelly Roll, Post Malone, Dua Lipa with Chris Stapleton, Thomas Rhett, Jason Aldean and more.

Nate Smith & Avril Lavigne Team Up for Fiery ‘Bulletproof’ Performance at 2024 ACM Awards

Nate Smith brought his latest hit, “Bulletproof,” the 2024 ACM Awards stage on Thursday night (May 16), calling on Avril Lavigne to join him on the live debut of their remix.

“Been takin’ these shots, shots, shots/ 80, 90, everything they’ve got/ But the whiskey don’t kill like it’s supposed to do/ Baby, your memory must be bulletproof,” the duo sang in the chorus of the high-energy track, as they were backed by a full live band.

“She’s my absolute home slice,” Smith told Billboard of Lavigne on the red carpet ahead of the event, which was produced by Dick Clark Productions. “Avril has amazing energy. Both of our energies are really great. We’re really great friends, we like to drink white wine, we like to attempt to skateboard.”

He continued that the duo are also working on original music together: “She’s just the coolest person and so real, and she lives in the moment in every way. I love that about her.”

It was an exciting evening for Smith, who also took home new male artist of the year at the ceremony. Earlier this week, he received the rookie of the year honor at Billboard‘s Country Power Players event.

Other performers for this year’s 2024 ACM Awards included Jason Aldean; Kelsea Ballerini and Noah Kahan; Kane Brown; Jelly Roll; Cody Johnson; Miranda Lambert; Post Malone; Parker McCollum; Reba McEntire; Thomas Rhett; Nate Smith featuring Avril Lavigne; Chris Stapleton; and Lainey Wilson.

Lainey Wilson Caps Her Incredible Night With Entertainer of the Year Win at 2024 ACM Awards

Lainey Wilson took home the prestigious entertainer of the year honors at the 2024 ACM Awards, produced by Dick Clark, which took place at the Ford Center at The Star in Frisco, TX on Thursday night (May 16).

After enjoying a laugh at their own expense by noting that they had won the award 40 years earlier, country greats Alabama presented the award to an overwhelmed-looking Wilson. “These past few years for us has just been a complete whirlwind,” raved the Billboard cover star, clearly choking back tears. “I’ve been in Nashville 13 years doing this.”

She want on to tell the crowd about a memory from her childhood: “I remember being a little girl, and climbing out on the top of the roof,” she began. “I’d count all the stars, and I’d see the planes flying over our town of 200 people, and I’d dream of being up in one of those planes.” She continued: “The funny thing is I still feel like that little girl … I still look at the stars, but I’m a little more eye-level with them now.”

The win was Wilson’s third of the night, after she also took home female artist of the year and event of the year earlier in the evening, the latter for her Jelly Roll duet “Save Me.” She also kicked off the awards with a cover of Little Texas’ “God Blessed Texas” that transitioned into her own “Hang Tight Honey.”

It was Wilson’s first time ever being nominated in the entertainer of the year category — making her the first winner to triumph in their first nomination since Thomas Rhett, when he shared the honors with Carrie Underwood in 2020.

Post Malone Debuts New Country Song, Plays ‘I Had Some Help’ at the 2024 ACM Awards

Post Malone‘s country era is in full swing. At Thursday night’s Dick Clark Productions-produced ACM Awards (May 16), the pop superstar fully immersed himself in the country world with a double-header performance of his new country music.

Posty began his set with the live performance debut of a currently unreleased song that will presumably appear on his forthcoming country album. “It’s a long lost highway,” he forlornly crooned over somber guitars and percussion. At the end of the song, Posty noted that no one had ever heard the song before.

As soon as he made that remark, he launched into a rendition of his current smash hit “I Had Some Help.” Although the track features an assist from country music superstar Morgan Wallen, the “Last Night” singer elected to sit out tonight’s performance. Regardless, Posty rocked the crowd, offering up both a ballad and a party song for the ACM Awards audience.

Trending on Billboard

“I Had Some Help” is expected to make its Billboard Hot 100 debut next week. The jaunty duet has already reached No. 18 on Country Airplay and No. 40 on Adult Top 40. Posty and Wallen’s link-up is the latest top-shelf collaboration for the “Circles” singer. Earlier this year he joined forces with Beyoncé for Cowboy Carter fan-favorite “Levii’s Jeans,” which reached No. 16 on the Hot 100. A few weeks later, he debuted atop the chart with his new Taylor Swift duet “Fortnight,” which served as the lead single from her chart-smashing Tortured Poets Department LP.

Malone’s performance undoubtedly enamored the crowd, with host Reba McEntire inviting him to join her in an impromptu duet of The Allman Brothers Band‘s “Ramblin’ Man” in honor of the late Dickey Betts.

Though Posty is still awaiting his first ACM Awards nomination, his “I Had Some Help” duet partner boasts the most nominations at this year’s ceremony. At the 2024 ACM Awards, Wallen notched six bids, including entertainer of the year.

Netflix has made a deal with the National Football League, the first of its kind for the streaming giant.

According to reports, Netflix is now a member of the sports streaming game as it has entered into a partnership with the National Football League. The deal is set for three years beginning with the upcoming 2024-2025 season. The deal will also include two Christmas Day games to be aired this year. The two games that Netflix will carry on Christmas Day will be rivalry games – the Pittsburgh Steelers travel to take on the Super Bowl Champion Kansas City Chiefs at Arrowhead Stadium, and the Baltimore Ravens head to NRG Stadium to face off against the Houston Texans. The Pittsburgh and Kansas City game holds a potential surge in viewing thanks to Taylor Swift’s huge fan base (she’s currently dating Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce).

The streaming giant is expanding its sports offerings, having finalized a deal with World Wrestling Entertainment for the rights to stream its weekly flagship show “Raw”. It’s set to stream the highly anticipated match between social media influencer Jake Paul and boxing legend Mike Tyson in July. The move falls in line with Netflix’s aggressive foray into live events within the past few years. It recently played host to “The Roast of Tom Brady”, which ranked as its highest-rated English language show within the past two weeks.

“Last year, we decided to take a big bet on live — tapping into massive fandoms across comedy, reality TV, sports and more,” Bela Bejaria, Netflix’s chief content officer, said in a statement. “There are no live annual events, sports or otherwise, that compare with the audiences N.F.L. football attracts.” Netflix’s entry into a game where Amazon has currently locked down Thursday night games since 2022 and NBC’s Peacock landed a playoff game in a landmark deal last season is set to have a serious impact. “Getting the king of premium streamers to say we are in the sports business for real is a pretty big deal for television,” said Lightshed Partners technology analyst Richard Greenfield. “Because it doesn’t matter what this means now — it just shows you you’ve got another serious bidder for sports rights.”

Thomas Rhett Struts Through Crowd Looking for Someone ‘Beautiful As You’ at the 2024 ACM Awards

When it came time for his performance at Thursday night’s (May 15) 2024 ACM Awards, Thomas Rhett found himself on the lookout for someone as “Beautiful as You.”

Starting out among the audience in Ford Center at The Star in Frisco, Texas, Rhett waltzed through the crowd of fellow attendees while singing the first verse of his latest single, stopping to take the occasional selfie and wave at his friends and colleagues.

Once he hit the stage, though, Rhett made sure to put the focus entirely on his pop-tinged country track. Dressed in a tan suede jacket and a pair of simple blue jeans, Rhett hit each note of the romantic anthem singing all about the object of his affection, his wife Lauren. “What’s someone as beautiful as you/ Doin’ ridin’ ’round with someone like me?” he sang. “I swear, girl, you could have anyonе you choose/ I should stop askin’ questions ‘fore you gеt up and leave.”

The ceremony hosted by country superstar Reba McEntire and produced by Dick Clark Productions saw some of the biggest stars in the genre up for trophies. “Fast Car” singer Luke Combs led the evening’s nominees with a whopping eight nods, while Megan Maroney and Morgan Wallen followed close behind with six nominations a piece.

The performance amid a banner year for Rhett, who earned his 20th No. 1 on Billboard’s Country Airplay chart in March thanks to his song “Mawmaw’s House” with Morgan Wallen. “To have 20 [No. 1s] on the Billboard chart is really mind-blowing,” Rhett told Billboard at the time. “It means that fans are connecting with the music we make, and that is a feeling that never goes old. It means the world to me.”

Jelly Roll & Lainey Wilson Win Emotional Music Event of the Year at the 2024 ACM Awards

Jelly Roll and Lainey Wilson don’t need any saving, ’cause they just took home music event of the year at the 2024 ACM Awards. The duo accepted the prize together Thursday night (May 16) onstage at Ford Center at The Star in Frisco, Texas, with the “Son of a Sinner” singer giving one of his signature emotional speeches as his duet partner looked on with pride.

Wilson kicked off the acceptance speech by promising to keep it short and simple, as she knew that Jelly was about “to preach” when it came to his turn at the microphone. But she did take a moment to thank the Tennessee native for featuring her on the track, which appears on Jelly’s 2023 album Whitsitt Chapel, and peaked at No. 19 on the Billboard Hot 100 in November.

As the “Need a Favor” artist stepped up to the mic, his wife, podcaster Bunnie XO, was visibly emotional as she watched him from her seat in the audience. “This song saved me,” he told the crowd with tears in his eyes. “I was in a dark place. I thought I would die and go to jail, and I’m standing here today an ACM Awards winner.”

Wilson and Jelly first premiered “Save Me” at the 2023 ACM Awards. This year, they both performed separately, with the former opening the show with her new song “Hang Tight Honey” shortly before the latter brought the heat with “Liar.”

Both stars are also nominated for entertainer of the year at the 2024 awards, which are hosted by Reba McEntire and produced by Dick Clark Productions.

Saucy Santana Clowns DJ Akademiks Over Rape & Defamation Case

Earlier this week DJ Akademiks found himself in some legal hot water when his ex-girlfriend sued him for rape and defamation and though he’s vowed to his fans that he’d fight the case to the bitter end in what he’s calling a “shakedown,” the Hip-Hop personality shouldn’t count on much support from one, Saucy Santana.

It wasn’t that long ago when DJ Akademiks and Saucy Santana were involved in a very public back-and-forth and though things have died down since then, Santana reemerged to take some shots at Ak as he deals with this latest legal headache. Taking to Instagram stories to roast Akademiks for the accusations made against him, an animated Santana seemed to enjoy pointing out that Akademiks reveled in the allegations made about Yung Miami in P. Diddy’s lawsuit but asked fans to dismiss the accusations made towards him.

“6ix9ine freaky b*tch! Nasty tail! And what would make you think we believe that it’s fake lawyers? What would make you think we believe that these is fake headlines? But when it was Caresha b*tch, the word was bond. It was no m*thaf*cking way! Pink cocaine and all this other weird ass sh*t, but b*tch we supposed to believe that shorty lying on you? I don’t think so. Not gon’ happen. Midget d*ck bitch! Sitting down all m*thaf*cking day. You just smell like sat! Sat! Been sitting in that m*thaf*cking seat!”

You can tell Saucy Santana’s been waiting for a reason to once again clap at Akademiks and we ain’t mad cause it was pretty funny. Just sayin.’

Earlier this week DJ Akademiks ex-girlfriend Ziya Abashe filed a lawsuit against Akademiks alleging that he and two of his friends drugged and raped her after he invited her to his home in July of 2022. Naturally Akademiks proclaimed his innocence and promised he’d pay as much money as needed to clear his name in a court of law instead of paying Abashe to settle as he’s called this suit a “shakedown.”

Now that Saucy Santana’s gotten in on the clowning of Akademiks once again, will he respond and reheat the beef the two had just last year or will he refuse to entertain the drama? Guess we’ll have to wait and see.

What do y’all think of Saucy Santana cutting ass on DJ Akademiks over his rape lawsuit? Let us know in the comments section below.
