Ayra Starr invites Billboard behind the scenes of her new music video, “Last Heartbreak Song,” with Giveon off of her sophomore album, The Year I Turned 21.

Ayra Starr:

Everybody knows I love, I love to film, and I love to make people feel through my music.

Giveon:

I don’t usually shoot that many videos, but I’m a big fan of Ayra.

Ayra Starr:

What’s up? I’m Ayra Starr. Thank you so much Billboard for coming to my set, and this is Billboard News.

Tetris Kelly:

Hanging out on set of “Last Heartbreak Song” with Ayra Starr. How are you girl?

Ayra Starr:

I’m good. How are you?

Tetris Kelly:

I’m amazing now that I’m hanging out with you, so tell me about your day so far. How are you feeling?

Ayra Starr:

I feel good, I feel cold. You know, we’ve been on the beach and the beach here is very cold.

Tetris Kelly:

Well, that’s what I was gonna say because of course when people see the video, they’re just seeing sexy this and they’re seeing you giving all of that, but-

Ayra Starr:

I’m professional.

Tetris Kelly:

Where you’re filming, it is chilly out there. So how do you like balance it?

Ayra Starr:

Tetris Kelly:

And then I mean “Last Heartbreak Song.” Why was this the next offering you wanted to give from your album now after the first two singles?

Ayra Starr:

So I’ve had “Last Heartbreak Song” during when I was making my first album. So it’s a really old song and it’s a song that….

“This project is quite special to me and i hope it’ll be something special to you too,” she wrote on social media, alongside a photo of the star looking over her shoulder with a red kiss mark on her arm. She also posted the pre-save link.

To wrap up her announcement, Carpenter added that she has “a surprise coming for you on Thursday night so keep an eye out!!”

Carpenter released her viral hit “Espresso” right before she took the stage at Coachella back in April. The track currently sits at No. 4 on the Billboard Hot 100 songs chart.

In February, the 25-year-old pop star confirmed in an  Interview conversation with Maya Hawke that she was working on the follow-up to her 2022 fifth studio album, Emails I Can’t Send. “I feel a lot freer and more excited about what I’m making now because I’ve realized that genre isn’t necessarily the most important thing,” she revealed. “It’s about honesty and authenticity and whatever you gravitate towards. There were a lot of genres in my last album, and I like to think I’ll continue that throughout writing music.”

The singer’s Emails I Can’t Send, which features hits like “Nonsense,” “Feather” and “Because I Liked a Boy” peaked at No. 23 on the Billboard 200 albums chart, marking Carpenter’s highest-charting effort on the tally.

WMT Digital Acquires Aloompa, Combining Two Leaders in Live Event Tech Solutions

WMT Digital has acquired Aloompa, a leading mobile app provider for live event experiences.

Drew Burchfield, who co-founded Aloompa in 2008, will board WMT Digital as a vp, with his entire team also joining the company. WMT focuses on technology solutions for fan engagement, storytelling, data applications and revenue platforms.

“We started in 2012 as a tech consultancy and evolved into a tech integrator model, and then eventually a digital platform and a tech provider,” says Andres Focil, founder/CEO of WMT Digital. “The goal of the business was to think about ways that we can unlock storytelling through technology. Today platforms are going more modular, flexible and scalable and really shifting from traditional content into much more dynamic storytelling content and we spend a lot of time thinking about like finding product market fit and creating specific use cases for organizations that fit their particular market.”

Traditionally, WMT has worked in the collegiate and professional sports space while Aloompa has a major foothold in the live music and festival space.

“There’s so much cross opportunity between the entertainment space and the sports space and the larger event space,” Focil notes, pointing to one of the company’s clients, Snapdragon Stadium in San Diego, as an example.

Trending on Billboard

“It’s a multi-tenant venue with four different teams that also hosts a lot of events, including concerts,” Focil says. “So when we built out their application, we were thinking about ways that we can store their tickets, if you’re a season ticket holder for a particular team or you are attending a concert, and from there we really started trying to understand how to cross-sell and upsell and then create synergies between the two. We’ve started exploring the market and found that Aloompa is the premium solution in the music space and we started having discussions” that led to an eventual deal.

“I think the thing that’s super exciting here between Andres’ vision and the greater team’s vision is that what is being built is a vertical stack of solutions for an event or for a team that puts data in the center,” Burchfield said. “For events and festivals, the power is in tools that leverage all the touch points of a fan, which is really the ultimate long-term solution. And I would say that approximately 70% of those pieces are now in place with our two companies coming together. And we’re going to be attacking the market in that way.”

Aloompa will operate as a standalone brand, based in Nashville, within the “FanOS” product category of WMT. The combined companies will continue to support existing partners and customers while bringing new offerings to market designed to solve client-related challenges.

Miley Cyrus Explains How ‘II Most Wanted’ Beyoncé Duet Came to Be: ‘It Encompasses Our Relationship’

Miley Cyrus was a ride-or-die pal of Beyoncé‘s long before their “II Most Wanted” collaboration dropped on the latter’s Cowboy Carter earlier this year.

And in her new W Magazine cover story published Monday (June 3), the “Flowers” singer opened up about how her yearslong friendship with Queen Bey indirectly inspired their decision to team up on the country-Western duet. “I wrote that song, like, two and a half years ago,” she said of “II Most Wanted,” which peaked at No. 6 on the Billboard Hot 100 in April. “When Beyoncé reached out to me about music, I thought of it right away because it really encompasses our relationship.”

“I told her, ‘We don’t have to get country; we are country. We’ve been country,’” she continued. “Getting to write a song, not just sing, for Beyoncé was a dream come true.”

Cyrus added that she’s been tight with the “Texas Hold ‘Em” singer since they both participated in a 2008 performance for Stand Up to Cancer alongside Mary J. Blige, Mariah Carey and more female stars. “I was sandwiched between Beyoncé and Rihanna,” she recalled, noting that she was just 14 at the time. “They were protective of me.”

The Hannah Montana alum added that she often chats with Bey over text, sometimes discussing the similarities between their moms. “I think it’s a really cute part of our relationship, because over the past couple of years, I’ve really locked down on my privacy and on what I share with the public,” Cyrus told the publication. “She’s the same way. Part of our relationship is the safety between us.”

Both women were present at the 2024 Grammys in February, where Cyrus won awards for the first time, thanks to “Flowers” nabbing both best pop solo performance and record of the year. In the interview, the “Wrecking Ball” musician was candid about the milestone, revealing that she feels as though the recognition was long overdue.

“No shade, but I’ve been doing this for 20 years, and this is my first time actually being taken seriously at the Grammys,” she said. “I’ve had a hard time figuring out what the measurement is there, because if we want to talk stats and numbers, then where the f–k was I? And if you want to talk, like, impact on culture, then where the f–k was I? This is not about arrogance. I am proud of myself.”

9 Best Moments From 2024 Roots Picnic: Jill Scott, Shaboozey, Gunna & More

Despite spotty showers and an often unrelenting sun, Philly didn’t let anything kill its vibe at the 2024 Roots Picnic, which took place June 1-2.

Nas, Jill Scott and Lil Wayne — alongside The Roots, Trombone Shorty and PJ Morton — headlined this year’s festival, which took place at The Mann in Fairmount Park in Philadelphia, Pa. Other notable performers included Method Man and Redman with J. Period, Adam Blackstone with Fantasia and Tasha Cobbs-Leonard, Robert Glasper with Yebba, Sexyy Red, Babyface, October London, Smino, the Go-Go Backyard Band with Scarface and Amerie, Wale, Marsha Ambrosius, Funk Flex, Leon Thomas, Kenya Vaun, Q, BLK Odyssy, Shaboozey, André 3000 and more.

Held across two separate stages — as well as the Centennial Stage, which hosted live podcasts, DJ sets and other curated experiential media activations — Roots Picnic celebrated countless facets of Black culture across music, food, liquor, art, double dutch and more. Among the most frequented brand activations was Grand Marnier — who hosted Billboard at the festival — which had a footprint where attendees and talent alike could find a beach-esque reprieve with various cocktails made with Grand Marnier cognac and Espolòn tequila.

Partnering with 2024 Roots Picnic is just the latest iteration of Grand Marnier’s relationship with hip-hop. On April 29, the cognac brand teamed up with Billboard 200 chart-topper 2 Chainz for The Rouge Room, a digital content series celebrating the power and utility of collaboration. And on Nov. 14, 2023, Grand Marnier joined forces with UNWRP for a unique holiday wrapping paper inspired by Billboard’s November 2023 R&B/Hip-Hop Rookie of the Month Teezo Touchdown.

2024 Roots Picnic largely went off without a hitch, save for Cam’Ron standing up attendees who came for his scheduled set, and notable delays on the main stage during the festival’s second day. From André 3000 enrapturing fans with selections from his ambient jazz album New Blue Sun to fans nearly tearing each other to shreds over Method Man’s sweaty T-shirt, there was rarely a dull moment at this year’s Roots Picnic. Even still, the presence of consummate contemporary performers such as Victoria Monét and Tyla — both of whom pulled out of performing due to health issues — was sorely missed.

The festival took big swings with its lineup — the transition from Babyface to Gunna was particularly disorienting for some attendees — but those risks resulted in one of the most heartfelt dedications to the breadth of Black music in 2024 so far. Nearly every sound of the diaspora was present in one way or another during the two-day festival, the perfect way to bring in Black Music Month.

Here are the nine best moments of this year’s Roots Picnic.

Anitta & Ozuna Jump on FloyyMenor & Cris MJ’s ‘Gata Only (Remix)’: Here’s What We Know

The highly awaited “Gata Only (Remix)” is dropping this week, Billboard can exclusively announce Monday (June 3).

Currently on its eighth consecutive week at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot Latin Songs chart, FloyyMenor and Cris MJ have reeled in Ozuna and Anitta for the star-studded remix of their infectious reggaetón banger that was released on Feb. 2 via UnitedMasters.

Hoping fans will enjoy the new version, the Puerto Rican artist tells Billboard he’s thrilled to be collaborating with Floyy and Cris, “two Chilean artists who are making their mark on urban music,” he notes, “in addition to working with Anitta again.”

“‘Gata Only’ has become a worldwide hit and the fact that two artists like Ozuna and Anitta join the remix makes it all bigger and more special,” FloyyMenor adds.

For Cris, Billboard’s Latin Artist on the Rise in May, he notes it’s also an honor to have two artists that “he admires and who have been uplifting Latin culture for years connect with their musical proposal.”

The “Gata Only (Remix)” drops Friday, June 7, and finds Ozuna and the Brazilian bombshell playfully belting out Chilean slang in their verses. Billboard can confirm an official music video featuring all four artists is also in the works.

“Gata Only” — which also earned both La Serena-based artists their first Billboard Hot 100 entry — made history on the Hot Latin Songs chart, marking the first time any Chilean artist entered the top 10 since La Ley and Ednita Nazario’s “Tu Sabes Bien” peaked at No. 8 in 1999. Prior to that, it was Myriam Hernández’s “Huele a Peligro,” which peaked at No. 5 in 1998.

“The lyrics talk about TikTok, about likes, about following,” Gerardo Mejía, UnitedMasters’ Latin A&R lead and former singer/rapper, previously told Billboard of the song’s success. “I think that he hit something that resonates with the kids. To top it off, it’s such a great melody. And having Cris MJ never hurts.”

Taraji P. Henson to Host 2024 BET Awards

Taraji P. Henson will host the 2024 BET Awards live from the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles. She previously hosted the show in 2021 and 2022. The Oscar-nominated actress (for The Curious Case of Benjamin Button) is one of only two performers to host the show three times (the other being Mo’Nique, who won an Oscar for Precious). The 2024 BET Awards will air live on the East Coast on Sunday, June 30, on BET at 8 p.m. ET/ PT.

“Taraji is a phenom, known for her vibrant personality and charisma, and we are excited to welcome her back to host Culture’s Biggest Night, [the] BET Awards, the ultimate celebration of Black creativity,” Connie Orlando, BET’s EVP specials, music programming & music strategy, said in a statement.

Previously announced performers include GloRilla, Latto, Muni Long, Sexyy Red, Shaboozey and Victoria Monét. Sexyy Red, GloRilla and Long all have hits climbing the top 20 on Billboard’s current Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart. Sexyy Red’s “Get It Sexyy” jumps from No. 9 to No. 7, GloRilla’s “Yeah Glo!” jumps from No. 11 to No. 8 and Long’s “Made for Me” leaps from No. 25 to No. 17.

Shaboozey’s “A Bar Song (Tipsy)” holds at No. 2 on Billboard’s Hot Country Songs chart after logging three weeks at No. 1.

If these artists perform these hits on the show, it could not only give the hits a boost, but the records’ Grammy chances, because the audience will likely include Grammy voters who are starting to think of their Grammy choices. (The Grammys’ online entry period runs from July 17 to Aug. 31.) Long’s “Made for Me” has the sophisticated R&B appeal of Monét’s “On My Mama,” which was nominated for record of the year at the Grammy ceremony that was held on Feb. 4.

Usher is set to receive the lifetime achievement award at this year’s BET Awards. He also has four nominations.

Drake leads the 2024 BET Awards nominations with seven nods, followed by Nicki Minaj with six; J. Cole, Sexyy Red, SZA, Monét and Beyoncé with five each; and 21 Savage, Doja Cat, Megan Thee Stallion, Tyla and Usher, with four each.

Voting for the 2024 Viewer’s Choice Award begins Thursday June 6 and ends June 30. Nominees in that category are Doja Cat’s “Agora Hills,” Lil Durk’s “All My Life” (featuring J. Cole), Gunna’s “Fukumean,” Jack Harlow’s “Lovin on Me,” Long’s “Made for Me,” Monét’s “On My Mama,” Drake’s “Rich Baby Daddy” (featuring Sexyy Red & SZA), Chris Brown’s “Sensational (featuring Davido & Lojay), Beyoncé’s “Texas Hold ‘Em” and Tyla’s “Water.”

Orlando will oversee and executive produce the annual show. Jamal Noisette, SVP, tentpoles & music community engagement, will co-executive produce for BET. Jesse Collins Entertainment is the production company for the show, with Jesse Collins, Dionne Harmon, and Jeannae Rouzan-Clay also serving as executive producers.

Eminem’s Daughter Alaina Had a Few Hilarious Emojis for the Rapper After His ‘Houdini’ Diss

Eminem didn’t hold back with his fiery “Houdini” single as he had smoke for everybody — even his three children weren’t exempt from his disses.

The Detroit legend turned the clock back to the early 2000s, channeling his Slim Shady alter-ego with his first single of 2024 — which dropped May 31 — as he heads into his The Death of Slim Shady (Coup De Grâce) album this summer. Em dissed his mentor and close friends Jimmy Iovine and Dr. Dre, along with his kids on the magic-themed track’s final verse.

“F–k them f–k Dre, f–k Jimmy, f–k me, f–k you, f–k my own kids they’re brats,” he raps in classic Eminem fashion.

Em’s 31-year-old daughter, Alaina Marie Scott, responded to the jab in the comments section of his May 31 post on the next day with four middle-finger emojis.

Fans had a laugh at the playful response, as her comment compiled more than 1,400 likes and 70 replies.

For those who don’t know, Em adopted Alaina in the early 2000s as her mother, who is his ex-wife Kim Scott’s sister, struggled with addiction. He is also the father to the newly married Hailie Jade and Stevie. All three of his kids were also featured in the “Houdini” music video.

Hailie revealed she tied the knot with Evan McClintock in a heartfelt Instagram post on May 20. Photos emerged from the ceremony, featuring Em taking part in the daddy-daughter dance.

“Waking up a wife this week,” she emotionally began in her post. ⁣”We couldn’t have asked for a better, more beautiful weekend celebration. So so many happy tears were shed, laughs & smiles were had, & so much love was felt.

Hailie continued: “Evan and I are feeling so grateful for all of the family & friends that traveled to support us and be a part of this new chapter of our lives as husband & wife.”

Em’s kids, Dr. Dre and Jimmy Iovine weren’t the only ones who got name-dropped on “Houdini.” Slim Shady also brought up his manager Paul Rosenberg, RuPaul, Harry Houdini and Megan Thee Stallion.

Hipgnosis Songs Fund Board Backs Blackstone’s Revised Takeover Plan

Global investment giant Blackstone said on Monday it would pay a penny more to take over Hipgnosis Songs Fund (HSF), the London-listed company that owns Red Hot Chili Peppers’ catalog, because in a revised takeover plan disclosed Monday it is paying less in advisory fees.

In a joint announcement, Blackstone and HSF’s board of directors said they approved the offer paying $1.31 per share, which raises the overall value of the publicly traded arm of the music investment company to roughly $1.584 billion.

While Blackstone beat rival bidder Concord to be in the leading position to take private HSF’s 65,000-song portfolio, it raised its bid from the $1.57 billion it offered on April 29 as it still needs to secure enough shares voted in its favor to acquire the company.

Trending on Billboard

Blackstone said the revised, higher offer came about in part because Hipgnosis incurred “lower adviser fees in respect of the transaction than previously expected.”

The revised plan–formally called a scheme–must receive the support of 75% of shares voted either in person by investors or by proxy at a court meeting. Following that vote at the court meeting, the plan also has to receive a majority of shares voted in its favor at a general meeting. Blackstone and HSF’s board will publish the dates of the meeetings and additional information about the new acquisition scheme by June 14. The acquisition is expected to be completed in the third quarter, according to the filing.

With the support of HSF’s board members and a few other shareholders, Blackstone has 0.3% of shares pledged to vote in favor of its offer.

The new plan also includes a revision to what’s referred to as the A&R cooperation agreement that states the companies have agreed to cooperate “in certain matters relating to obtaining regulatory clearances in relation to the Acquisition.”

Representatives for HSF’s board and Blackstone did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

BIA Responds To Cardi B’s Subliminal With “SUE MEEE?” Diss Record

Last week, the internet was buzzing when Cardi B seemingly threw some shots at up-and-coming artist, BIA on Megan Thee Stallion and GloRilla’s remix to “Wanna Be.” And if you thought BIA would take such disrespect lying down, you got another thing coming.

On the aforementioned cut, Cardi raised some eyebrows with her bars when she spit, “Guess I’m a teacher since you wanna sub me/ She did what? Had no idea/ Thought she was on the shelf, IKEA/ Hope she talk like that when I see her/ B**ch please, don’t nobody wanna be ya [BIA].”

After the track dropped, BIA decided to take to X to sound off on her Bronx rival saying, “B*TCHS IS WACK. B*TCHS IS TRASH. I SHOULD HANG B*TCHS RIGHT OVER MY KNEE, THE WAY I BE PUTTING MY BELT TO THEY ASSSSSSS.”

Naturally, fans only added fuel to this fire and encouraged BIA to spit some darts over a track, which prompted a quick response from the MA native: “B*tch you don’t want me in the booth I’m REALLY like that.”

Well, she did it. Yesterday (June 2), BIA released a Cardi B response record dubbed “SUE MEEE?” where she wasted no time going at Cardi saying, “Put it on your gang and anything you f*ckin’ in/Put it on your name since you so gangsta like your f*ckin’ friends/Put it on your hubby since you love lying on your vows (wow)/I write all my verses, I can do this sh*t for hours.”

And those were just the first few bars.

Y’all already know Cardi B isn’t going to let this slide. It’s just a matter of how long before she drops a response record of her own and how hard will she go on it.

Check out BIA’s “SUE MEEE?”, and let us know your thoughts about this beef in the comments section below.
