Well, this came out of nowhere. Sony is now the owner of the popular movie theater chain Alamo Drafthouse.

The two companies announced the stunning news on Wednesday, revealing that Sony will oversee the theater experience under its new Sony Pictures Experiences division.

In a press release, Sony promises it “will preserve Alamo Drafthouse’s distinctive movie-dining experience.” At the same time, Alamo will continue operating “all 35 of its cinemas across 25 metro areas under the Alamo Drafthouse brand.”

Alamo’s current CEO, Michael Kustermann, will remain in his role. If you’re worried about the Fantastic Fest film festival, Alamo will still be in charge of that as well.

Sony is purchasing the movie theater chain from Altamont Capital Partners, Fortress Investment Group, and Alamo founder Tim League.

That same group took ownership of Alamo after it filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in 2021.

Sony purchased Alamo Drafthouse largely due to the 2020 termination of the Paramount Consent Decrees. According to The Verge, the 1948 Supreme Court decision required movie companies to sell the theaters they owned to increase competition and allow customer choice.

Now that movie fans have so many options for viewing films, the Department of Justice decided to reverse the decree.

While the news may shock many, Sony is not the first movie company to take advantage of the decree’s reverse.

Netflix also owns movie cinemas in New York and Los Angeles.

The reactions to the news are similar, with fans of the theater chain warning Sony not to mess this up.

“Not sure what this means but it’s an Alamo down the street from me and I love that place. Don’t ruin the vibes, Sony,” one person on X, formerly Twitter, wrote.

This writer agrees, and the price of my Alamo Season Pass better not rise either.

Jin Celebrates Finishing His Military Service & BTS’ Anniversary by Hugging 1,000 Fans

Jin has made his first public appearance following the completion of his mandatory service in the South Korean military, taking the stage Thursday (June 13) at the 2024 BTS Festa, where he personally greeted ARMY by giving hugs to 1,000 fans.

Held in Seoul in honor of the boy band’s 11-year anniversary, the event featured the 31-year-old K-pop star hosting his own offline event at Jamsil Arena, which opened with him individually welcoming each person in a long line of eager fans with a quick embrace or handshake. He later tested out new TikTok trends that went viral while he was away and sang his solo singles “The Astronaut” and “Super Tuna” — for which he performed the track’s second verse for the first time ever — as well as BTS’ “Moon” for the crowd.

The event came just one day after Jin officially completed his 18-month enlistment, during which he served as an assistant drill instructor. His bandmates RM, V, Jung Kook, SUGA, Jimin and J-Hope are all still performing their military obligations, but were granted leave to help commemorate their bandmate’s accomplishment Wednesday (June 12).

“I cried during the ceremony,” Jin said in a Weverse livestream later in the day. “But it was so fun for the last year and six months. It’s such a relief I met so many amazing people.”

None of the other six Bangtan Boys were able to attend the Festa, but they did each write letters to ARMY that were revealed at the event. Full-band activities are expected to start up again in 2025, and Jin’s presence at the anniversary party signals “the start of a highly anticipated next chapter for BTS,” according to a release.

Mark James, Grammy-Winning Songwriter of ‘Always on My Mind,’ Dead at 83

Songwriters are lucky if they leave behind one song that everyone knows and loves. Mark James, who y the Houston Chronicle reported died at his home in Nashville on June 8 at age 83, left behind three: “Suspicious Minds,” the final No. 1 hit on the Billboard Hot 100 by Elvis Presley; “Always on My Mind,” which was a top five Hot 100 hit for both Willie Nelson and Pet Shop Boys; and “Hooked on a Feeling,” which was a top five Hot 100 hit for both B.J. Thomas and Blue Swede.

James won two Grammy Awards – song of the year and best country song – for “Always on My Mind,” an exquisite ballad he co-wrote with Johnny Christopher and the late Wayne Carson. The song was also named song of the year by the Country Music Association in both 1982 and 1983. (CMA rules at the time allowed songs to win twice in this category, an overly generous policy which we can forgive if it worked to the benefit of a song this timeless and classic.)

Trending on Billboard

James was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2014 and the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame the following year. Thomas and Hunter Hayes performed James’ songs at the latter event.

James’ other notable hits included “The Eyes of a New York Woman,” a top 30 Hot 100 hit for Thomas in 1968; “Moody Blue,” a top 40 Hot 100 hit for Presley in 1977 and the title track of his last studio album released in his lifetime; and “Sunday Sunrise,” a top 10 hit on Hot Country Songs in 1973 for Brenda Lee.

James was born Francis Rodney Zambon on Nov. 29, 1940, in Houston, Texas. He befriended Thomas, who grew up in nearby Rosenberg, Texas, while both were still young. (Thomas died in 2021 at age 78.)

By the late 1960s, James was signed as a staff songwriter to Memphis producer Chips Moman’s publishing company. Moman produced Thomas’ versions of James’ songs “The Eyes of a New York Woman”, “Hooked on a Feeling” and “It’s Only Love” (which James co-wrote with Steve Tyrell). All three singles made the top 50 on the Hot 100 in 1968-69.

James released his own version of “Suspicious Minds,” also produced by Moman, on Scepter Records in 1968. Presley’s 1969 version, co-produced by Moman and Felton Jarvis, topped the Hot 100 in the issue dated Nov. 1, 1969, becoming the final No. 1 for the King of Rock and Roll.

In 1972, Lee had the first notable recording of “Always on My Mind.” Her version reached No. 45 on Billboard’s Hot Country Songs chart. Presley recorded the song that same year, but, in what may have been a missed opportunity, allowed the song to go out as the B-side of a far less memorable song, “Separate Ways.” “Separate Ways,” Presley’s follow-up to his No. 2 Hot 100 smash “Burning Love,” reached No. 20, but “Always on My Mind” may have had far greater potential. As noted, subsequent cover versions by Nelson and Pet Shop Boys both made the top five. (Pet Shop Boys’ 1988 EDM version of this classic ballad served as a reminder that a great song can be interpreted any number of ways.)

Also in 1972, James signed a long-term contract with Screen Gems-Columbia Music. In 1973, Lee landed a top 10 hit on Hot Country Songs with James’ “Sunday Sunrise.” Anne Murray revived the song with some success in 1975.

In 1974, James landed his second No. 1 on the Hot 100 when Blue Swede, a Swedish group, recorded “Hooked on a Feeling.” The song was propelled by a punchy performance and, especially, an “ooga chaka” introduction (borrowed from a 1971 cover by Jonathan King) that was at once grating and fiendishly clever. It was the love-it-or-hate-it hook that sent the song to No. 1 in April 1974.

Fine Young Cannibals, Jay-Z, Dwight Yoakam and Bill Withers are among the other artists who have recorded James’ songs. James’ songs have also been featured in such films as Kramer vs. Kramer, Black Hawk Down and Reservoir Dogs.

The TikTok Billboard Top 50 is a weekly ranking of the most popular songs on TikTok in the United States based on creations, video views and user engagement. The latest chart reflects activity June 3-9. Activity on TikTok is not included in Billboard charts except for the TikTok Billboard Top 50.

With five weeks at No. 1, “Million Dollar Baby” now sits one week from the reign of Mitski’s “My Love Mine All Mine,” which tallied six weeks atop the tally in late 2023. Mitski’s rule was split into two three-week segments at No. 1.

Trending on Billboard

“Million Dollar Baby” initially broke out on TikTok after Richman’s uploaded what eventually became a viral clip on the platform containing the then-unreleased song on April 13 (the video now has nearly 13 million views as of June 13).

Since its official release April 26, the song has been featured in a dance trend that has dominated its uploads since the end of April.

“Million Dollar Baby” has reached No. 2 on the multimetric Billboard Hot 100 so far; it ranks at No. 3 on the latest list via 45.2 million official U.S. streams, 35.2 million radio audience impressions and 7,000 downloads in the week ending June 6, according to Luminate.

Sexyy Red and Drake’s “U My Everything” lifts to No. 2 on the TikTok Billboard Top 50 in its second week. It continues to benefit from a trend where the user asks their significant other how many likes on TikTok they need for something to happen (to buy them something, to get back together, etc.)

The song falls to No. 49 after debuting at No. 44 on the Hot 100, accruing 9.5 million streams, 1.8 million audience impressions and 1,000 downloads.

Lay Bankz’s “Tell Ur Girlfriend” falls to No. 4, while Billie Eilish’s “Birds of a Feather” rises to No. 3. The latter remains a runaway hit from Eilish’s new album, Hit Me Hard and Soft, sporting a continued rise on charts weeks after the LP’s May 17 release. Its “Birds of a feather/ we should stick together” refrain is used to soundtrack creators’ uploads featuring friends, family and pets.

“Birds of a Feather” earned 28.4 million streams, 985,000 audience impressions and 3,000 downloads. The former metric is enough for the song to rise to No. 1 on the Alternative Streaming Songs chart, Eilish’s ninth ruler.

Kendrick Lamar’s “Not Like Us” ranks at No. 5 on the TikTok Billboard Top 50, while 310babii, OhGeesy and BlueBucksClan’s “Rock Your Hips” debuts at No. 6. Originally released May 3, “Rock Your Hips” has vaulted in TikTok activity thanks to a dance trend.

“Rock Your Hips” is 310babii’s second song to chart, following “Soak City,” which peaked at No. 17 last November. The tune accrued 883,000 streams in the week ending June 6.

One other song debuts in the top 10: Sabrina Carpenter’s “Please Please Please,” which saw its official release on June 7. The track was initially teased on TikTok on June 5, garnering 2.8 million views to date, while a post-performance video after Carpenter played Governors Ball in New York has more than 12 million watches so far.

As for uploads not from Carpenter herself, many of the top-performing uploads featuring “Please Please Please” include makeup tutorials, lip synchs and more.

The full impact of “Please Please Please” will be represented on the Billboard charts dated June 22.

Coldplay Announce First ‘Moon Music’ Album Single ‘feelslikeimfallinginlove’

Coldplay are gearing up to launch their Moon Music era. On Thursday (June 13) the band announced that the first single from their upcoming follow-up to 2021’s Music of the Spheres, “feelslikeimfallinginlove,” will drop on June 21. The tease featured the song’s unwieldy title across the face of a waning planet with a colorful corona erupting from its surface.

The band gave the first taste of the anthemic song from their 10th studio album last week when they posted a 20-second TikTok of singer Chris Martin singing the chorus in front of a neon-lit ferris wheel, crooning, “It feels like I’m falling in love/ You’re throwing me a lifeline/ Oh, not for the first time/ I know I’m not alone.” The beginning of the roll-out of Coldplay’s next artistic phase continued during their stop at the Olympic Stadium in Rome last weekend, where they handed out lyric flyers for the new song.

They also performed the uplifting track at one of the shows, as evidenced by another TikTok in which their devoted fans sang along as if the tune was one of their beloved favorites, as well as another video from what appeared to be the video shoot for the track. “When you’ve finished your video shoot but the incredible crowd keeps singing your new song,” they captioned yet another TikTok in which the crowd is lit up with neon bracelets and the band appear to be covered in glowing lights during the shoot.

At press time Coldplay had not yet announced the details of the release date or track list for Moon Music, which singer Martin has been talking up for a year. Back in January of 2023, he told the Toronto City News that the band was nearing completion of what he then promised was the second LP in the Music of the Spheres series. At the time he said, “but that won’t come out for a bit,” though he teased that the band “might” start rolling out some of the new songs live that year.

The never-ending Spheres global trek kicked off on March 18, 2022 in Costa Rica and is currently slated to wrap up with the second of two show in Eden Park in Auckland, New Zealand on November 16.

Chris Brown Gets Stuck Suspended in Midair While Performing During New Jersey Concert: Watch

Brown thought it would be a typical performance of “Under the Influence” — where he’s suspended in midair — but quickly realized it wouldn’t be so when he wasn’t being taken back to the ground during the song, leaving him hanging above the stage. While the dancers below him couldn’t do much to help, concert crews at the Prudential Center sprang into action and brought out a ladder to unhook him and bring him down to safety.

The hiccup didn’t stop CB’s singing, though. He continued to perform the song without much of a hitch to give the Newark fans the show they wanted. However, Brown can be seen visibly frustrated once he jumped off the ladder, giving one of the crew members an earful while pointing at them.

The singer will be hanging around the NYC area for the rest of the week, with a show slated for Long Island Friday (June 14), and then he’ll take over the Barclays Center in Brooklyn on Father’s Day (June 16).

The 11:11 Tour kicked off on June 5 in Detroit and finds support from Muni Long, Ayra Starr and Maeta. It’s been another successful arena run thus far and, of course, the signature meet-and-greet photos have gone viral from the trek on social media once again.

Billie Eilish Reveals She’s ‘Never Been Dumped’: ‘I’ve Only Done the Breaking Up’

Billie Eilish has done a lot of things, but one thing she’s never experienced is getting dumped.

In a discussion conducted by Lana Del Rey for Interview, the 22-year-old pop star revealed that she’s never been broken up with — but you shouldn’t be too quick to label her a “heartbreaker,” either. “I’m not going to get too in detail, because I’m going to be rude, but I’ve never been dumped,” she said in the article published Thursday (June 13). “And also, I’ve never been broken up with. I’ve only done the breaking up.”

“I think when people hear that, they’re like, ‘Oh, all you do is break hearts,’” she continued. “Sure, but that doesn’t mean that people are totally innocent. It means that I was like, ‘Oh, let me get the f–k out of here.’ Or it means things just weren’t right.”

“I don’t know how many times I’ve really been in love,” Eilish added. “I think there’s different versions of love, and I think that you can be in love and it might not be deep.”

Trending on Billboard

The nine-time Grammy winner was most recently romantically linked to The Neighbourhood’s Jesse Rutherford. The pair dated for about seven months before splitting in May 2023.

Eilish has since released her third studio album, Hit Me Hard and Soft, which debuted at No. 2 on the Billboard 200. All of its tracks charted on the Billboard Hot 100 upon its release, led by the single “Lunch,” which entered at No. 5.

On “Lunch,” Eilish sings directly about having feelings for women for the first time in her career. “I’m lucky that we’re in a period of time that is so much more welcoming in a lot of ways,” she told Del Rey of the track. “It’s still a big deal, but it’s not. The thing that’s been frustrating and gives me a lot of anxiety is the feeling of needing to explain myself all the time.”

“It’s so weird to grow up and change in front of the world,” she added. “The craziest part is discovering things about myself and then suddenly, everyone else knows, and I don’t even have a second to think about how it makes me feel.”

While many of her counterparts talk a good game Sexyy Red is really here for the smoke. She and her crew got into a massive brawl at an airport.

The St. Louis, Missouri, native was caught on video in a wild fight with multiple individuals. On Saturday, June 8, she and her entourage were at Newark Liberty International Airport in the early morning hours. Around 1:20 a.m. they got into it with another group at Terminal C, gate 82. Things escalated very quickly to the point where the “Skee Yee” rapper picked up a stanchion and started using it as a weapon. Soon after a man can be seen pulling her away from the action, but it seems she stayed active in the melee off camera.

The Port Authority has since issued a statement to XXL regarding the incident and have confirmed multiple arrests including Sexyy Red, born Janae Nierah Wherry. “Two victims were found to have lacerations to their heads,” reads the statment. “The two males accompanying Ms. Wherry, Leslie Baptiste and Carl Thompson, were arrested for assault, and Ms. Wherry was arrested for disorderly conduct.
