Justin Timberlake Returns to Social Media After Arrest to Shout Out the Knicks

Justin Timberlake is back to business as usual. Nine days after he was arrested on suspicion of driving while intoxicated, the 43-year-old pop star returned to social media Tuesday (June 25) with an Instagram video showing off his new Knicks-inspired merch ahead of his shows in New York City, the first of which Jessica Biel attended to show her husband support.

In the clip, Timberlake stands in the middle of Madison Square Garden before his two back-to-back Forget Tomorrow World Tour performances at the venue. Holding up a blue T-shirt with orange lettering, he proudly says, “This is so important right now.”

Trending on Billboard

“Let’s go, got y’all’s Knicks colors,” he continues before singing: “We had to do it! Bing bong!”

Though the *NSYNC alum’s comments are currently limited on the platform, Timberlake did receive some support underneath the video. “???? NEEED THAT ONE!!” wrote Travis Kelce, who’s a documented JT stan

Later that night, the singer took the MSG stage for what would be his third performance back after his arrest. Fan cameras captured Biel enjoying the show from the floor among hundreds of fans, dancing along to the music and appearing to hold her 4-year-old son Phineas, whom she shares with Timberlake, along with 9-year-old Silas.

Prior to his New York show, Timberlake performed two nights in Chicago on June 21 and 22. At the first, he broke his silence on his brush with the law by telling the crowd, “It’s been a tough week.”

“I know I’m hard to love sometimes but you keep loving me right back,” he added at the time. “We’ve been together through ups and downs and lefts and rights … but you’re here and I’m here, and nothing can change this moment right now.”

The heartfelt moment came four days after Timberlake was arrested on DWI charges in Sag Harbor, N.Y., after being pulled over after leaving a restaurant. Local police recently confirmed via statement that the “SexyBack” singer was also cited for running a stop sign and not staying in his lane.

“[We] look forward to vigorously defending Mr. Timberlake against these allegations,” Timberlake’s lawyer, Ed Burke, said in a statement last week. “He will have a lot to say at the appropriate time. He is currently awaiting full discovery from the DA’s office.”

50 Cent To Headline Earn Your Leisure’s Invest Fest In Atlanta

Love him or hate him, 50 Cent has proven over the years to be a helluva business man, and now he’ll be sharing some of his knowledge to the good people of Atlanta this coming August.

According to TMZ, the multi-platinum rapper-turned entrepreneur will be headlining Earn Your Leisure’s Invest Fest in the A where he’ll be giving attendees some insight and information he feels can help them on their way to their first million. Naturally, many won’t have the platform that 50 had before getting into the film and TV industry, but it should still be quite the insightful event.

Per TMZ:

The event is right up 50’s alley … he and attorney Ben Crump recently went to Washington, D.C. in the name of Black entrepreneurship, pushing for minority representation in the alcohol biz … and we’re told he’ll speak to that topic and much more during the annual event.

Even more fittingly, 50 will succeed Diddy, who hosted last year’s Invest Fest, and we all know how “competitive” he’s been with Puff for years, and especially lately … in the wake of the latter’s slew of legal issues.

Earn Your Leisure co-founder Troy Millings tells us 50 represents “the powerful blend of culture and business,” — so, recruiting him for the coveted gig was an easy call.

Rashad Bilal believes 50 will leave attendees with invaluable lessons — “We believe [50’s] insights and experiences will inspire and empower our audience to pursue their own paths to financial freedom.”

Honestly, we wouldn’t be surprised if 50 accepted the invitation just to spite last year’s host, Diddy. Heck, the man’s so petty he might throw a few jabs at the embattled music mogul while sharing his knowledge.

Invest Fest will be going down from Aug. 23 to the Aug. 25 and will feature the likes of T.I., Stephen A. Smith, Monica and Pinky Cole amongst others.

The 25 Best Pride Songs of 2024 (So Far): Staff Picks

With music from queer artists going more mainstream than ever, our staff picks their 25 favorite examples from 2024 thus far.

At a time of year where calls for increased representation reach a fever pitch, the LGBTQ+ community is especially in need of greater depiction in the music business. As a recent survey conducted by Queer Capita, The Orchard and Billboard found, nearly half of surveyed LGBTQ+ workers said they found the music industry’s current levels of representation to be lacking, while a mere 8% felt their respective companies provided adequate resources for their queer-identifying employees. Simply put, queer music professionals are ready to see real change happen for their community.

It’s a sentiment shared by the queer community at large today — while state legislatures around the U.S. have already introduced over 500 anti-LGBTQ bills, reporting shows that public reception of such legislation has shifted. The Human Rights Campaign released a polling memo in May, showing that according to a number of national polls, a majority of Americans agree that legislation against the LGBTQ+ community has gone too far.

Yet in an industry where queer professionals feel they’re not being adequately platformed and a time where LGBTQ+ people are actively under attack, it sure feels like 2024 has been a banner year for queerness in music. Across genres and styles, LGBTQ+ artists have provided fans with some of the most-loved music of the last six months. Some queer artists have even managed to find massive success on the charts, a feat considered practically impossible in musical eras past. If the first few years of the 2020s marked a queer awakening in popular music, then 2024 may well serve as the start of an official queer renaissance.

With so many excellent entries from LGBTQ+ musicians to choose from in 2024, which ones stand out amongst the rest? Below, Billboard staffers offer our picks of the 25 best songs from LGBTQ+ artists released in 2024.

Emilio Estefan on Producing 2024 Leagues Cup Anthem ‘Nuestros Colores’: ‘I Wanted to Showcase Unity’

When the Leagues Cup approached Emilio Estefan to produce this year’s tournament anthem, the renowned producer and songwriter knew exactly what he wanted to capture with this song.

“My idea was to create something that is important to me, and that was to showcase unity and different cultures,” Estefan tells Billboard about writing and producing “Nuestros Colores,” the official anthem for the 2024 Leagues Cup. “That’s why I had artists from different cultures, to represent the unity between us Latinos and really show our diverse colors.”

The euphoric, percussion-heavy track powered by blaring horns features Mexican mariacheño star Christian Nodal; Argentine singer Abel Pintos; Cuban-American producer and multi-instrumentalist Emily Estefan (Emilio and Gloria Estefan’s daughter); Black Eyed Peas’ Taboo; Colombian singer-songwriter Gusi; and, from Panamá, Rabanes lead singer Emilio Regueira.

Trending on Billboard

Estefan came up with a global sound that reflected the tournament’s international appeal and the teams’ diversity. The Leagues Cup had approached other producers, but “they came back with something too local, something either too Mexican or too Colombian,” explains Estefan. “I said, ‘Let me give it a try,’ and I produced a song that is true to what I do. I mix sounds. I’ve been doing that since Miami Sound Machine. We became famous because we combined cultures and sounds.”

The annual Leagues Cup is an international soccer tournament that includes the United States’ Major League Soccer (MLS) and Mexico’s Liga MX respective clubs. Lionel Messi’s Inter Miami is the defending champion. It’s the team that Estefan, who is Miami-based, is rooting for this year, he confirms. “Inter Miami brought so much unity to Miami,” he explains. “When you go to a game, you see people from all over the world.”

Just after Copa América ends, the soccer tournament currently taking place in the U.S., the 2024 Leagues Cup is set to kick off July 26, with all matches to be played in the U.S. and Canada.

‘Kehlani’ Singer Jordan Adetunji Signs With 300 Entertainment & Warner Records UK

Belfast singer/songwriter Jordan Adetunji, who scored a viral hit earlier this year with the single “Kehlani,” signed to 300 Entertainment in North America and Warner Records UK, the companies tell Billboard.

“Jordan is a generational talent whose music transcends genres,” said Kevin Liles, CEO of 300 Entertainment, in a statement. “300 is built on recognizing an artist’s authentic self and empowering them to share their gifts with the world. We are proud to partner with Jordan’s management team and our incredible UK Warner Records family in this artistic journey.”

“Partnering with 300 was a decision based on people and actions for me,” added Adetunji. “When meeting Kevin we talked a lot about the meaning of artist development and it felt like a great home to continue our global journey!”

Trending on Billboard

According to a press release, “Kehlani” boasts 25 million streams and 450,000 TikTok creates to date and has peaked at No. 3 on the U.S. Shazam chart and hit the top 10 of the Spotify Viral Chart in multiple countries, including the No. 1 spot on the U.S. tally. Kehlani herself posted two TikTok videos in support of the song that racked up more than 5 million views, further raising its profile.

“Making a song about Kehlani was a no brainer to me, her confidence and huge cultural impact is something I love! I love confidence,” Adetunji added. “Especially when people do things that put themselves out there, doing things out the norm and showing huge ambition. When I made the track in my room I posted the snippet and when I seen the hype I recorded a new verse and dropped it everywhere within two days after! It made so much sense for me to get this song out asap.”

Last year, Adetunji independently released his debut EP, ROCK N’ RAVE, which included the single “YOU & I” and “INVOLVED.”

This week: It’s all things The Pop Out, as Kendrick Lamar and his many Friends see considerable gains following their All-Star Juneteenth concert.

Run It Back: Could “Not Like Us” Recapture No. 1 After Kendrick’s Epic Showcase?

The main event at The Forum in Los Angeles last Wednesday (June 19) was, of course, the first live performance from Kendrick Lamar since his unofficial (though rather decisive) victory over Drake in the biggest hip-hop feud of the decade so far. Kendrick’s 18-track set, which featured guest appearances from his Black Hippy crewmates and his longtime industry mentor Dr. Dre and was streamed nationally over Amazon Prime, seemed to capture the entire country’s attention on Juneteenth — and unsurprisingly, has led to major catalog gains for Kendrick Lamar. The rap superstar posted nearly 61 million combined official on-demand U.S. streams over the following three-day period (June 20-22), a gain of 31% over the three-day period prior to Juneteenth (June 16-18).

Trending on Billboard

Of course, the most consequential bump was for Kendrick Lamar’s knockout blow in the Drake bout, the Mustard-produced, Billboard Hot 100-topping Song of the Summer contender “Not Like Us.” The song’s performance was the most anticipated part of the entire evening, and its landing as the show’s final song certainly did not disappoint — particularly because Lamar ran back its opening verse twice, performed the entire song three times, and even let the instrumental play as the closing credits rolled on the telecast. It apparently still wasn’t enough for his fans, as the song collected nearly 21 million combined streams over the three days following the concert, a 62% bump from the prior three-day period. (It should be mentioned that streams collected by a song over a normal Thursday-to-Saturday period usually are a little higher than those from Monday to Wednesday, just based on national streaming patterns.)

Could the bump be enough to send “Not Like Us,” currently the No. 6 song on the Hot 100, back to No. 1 for a second week? It will almost certainly climb back into the top five next week, and could even challenge to pass this week’s champ, Sabrina Carpenter’s “Please Please Please” — which is slipping a little in streams so far this week. But No. 1 could still be out of its reach, given the radio airplay disadvantage it has against Post Malone and Morgan Wallen’s “I Had Some Help,” which reigned for five weeks before being displaced by Carpenter and has remained steady in sales and streams. Still, Lamar has an extra weapon at his disposal: the much-anticipated official “Not Like Us” video, which he was seen filming over the weekend. If he unleashes that before the tracking week ends, the extra attention could be enough to put it over the top.

Black Hippy S–t: ScHoolboy Q, Jay Rock & Ab-Soul Also Up in Streams

One of the most triumphant stretches of The Pop Out came when Kendrick Lamar was joined on stage by his former Top Dawg Entertainment labelmates ScHoolboy Q, Jay Rock and Ab-Soul for a Black Hippy crew reunion — their first appearance together since Lamar officially departed the label after 2022’s Mr. Morale & The Big Steppers. Jay Rock joined first to perform his Lamar collaborations “Money Trees” and “Kings Dead” and his own “Win,” then Ab-Soul appeared to help Lamar on “6:16 in LA,” and finally ScHoolboy Q completed the set for “Collard Greens” and the Black Hippy remix of “That Part.” The trio then continued dancing onstage through Lamar’s performance of his own solo classic, “King Kunta.”

All three of the special guests were able to parlay their surprise appearances into major streaming gains in the days following the concert. Ab-Soul collected 291,000 total official on-demand U.S. streams over the three-day post-Juneteenth period (June 20-22), up 44% from the three days before the show (June 16-18), according to Luminate. Jay Rock was up 45% over the same period, to just over one million streams. And ScHoolboy Q saw a 31% bump, with over 4.3 million streams amassed. While the other big guest during Lamar’s set, West Coast godfather Dr. Dre, didn’t get as big a catalog percentage bump, his 1999 classic “Still D.R.E.” — which introduced his surprise appearance — was also up 19% over the same period, to over 1.2 million streams.

A Little Help From His Friends: Mustard, YG & More Openers See Gains of Their Own

The Pop Out was a star-studded event before Kendrick ever even took the stage. Preceding him in the Forum spotlight was fellow L.A. legend Mustard — producer behind “Not Like Us,” as well as an innumerous number of West Coast classics over the past 15 years — who began by reminding the crowd of some of the eternal bangers he was responsible for (including Tyga’s “Rack City,” 2 Chainz’s “I’m Different” and Big Sean’s “I Don’t F–k With You.”) He then brought out a succession of local special guests, some of whom (like Dom Kennedy and Tyler, the Creator) performed songs he took no part in, and some of whom (namely set closers Roddy Ricch and YG) exclusively played songs he helmed.

Many of those artists saw big bumps from their appearances at the televised event over the three days following the event (June 20-22) from the three days prior (June 16-18), and many of the songs performed were particular beneficiaries. Tyler racked up gains for the two songs he performed, “Wusyaname” (up 48% to 657,000) and “Earfquake” (up 28% to 1.5 million), as did Dom Kennedy for his pair of picks, “When I Come Around” (up 142% to 102,000) and “My Type of Party” (up 127% to 69,000), according to Luminate. And YG, who finished off the Mustard set with a selection of classics, saw his entire catalog lift 35%, to nearly four million streams over the three-day period.

Mustard also saw a huge spike for the song that made for the emotional centerpiece of his set: “Perfect Ten,” his collab with the late Nipsey Hussle, whose presence still hung over the entire West Coast celebration. The song was up 127% to 123,000 streams over the three-day period.

ESPN’s Stephen A. Smith Rips Diddy for Deleting Cassie Apology Video: Watch

Diddy scrubbed his Instagram account clean last week and he faced backlash for deleting his apology video to Cassie. Among those criticizing Sean Combs for the “foolish” move is ESPN’s Stephen A. Smith, who ripped the embattled music executive.

“You deleted all the videos from your Instagram account including the one I just showed,” he said on the Tuesday (June 25) episode of Stephen A. Smith Show. “If you had a million photos, if you had a million videos, and you decided to delete 999,999, that’s the one you should’ve kept up if you’re sincere.”

Stephen A. continued: “And I know that you’ve been taking a lot of hits, and there’s been shrapnels of criticism all over the place aimed in your direction. Not that it wasn’t deserved … Although one could argue, the ex that you hit had to deal with a hell of a lot more than you had to deal with in terms of the criticism.”

Smith just couldn’t understand how Diddy or his PR team thought it would be the right move to delete the Cassie apology video when public perception was not on his side.

“Delete everything else — not that,” he claimed. “Don’t you want people to know that you were contrite? That you were incredibly sorry? That you have profound regret for the egregious actions that you were caught on camera committing?”

The boisterous First Take host added: “By deleting the video, you throw all of that out the window. The possibility of the very few people that would ever believe that really having a reason to continue to believe you.”

Fans noticed Diddy cleared his IG account last week, including the apology video in response to footage of him physically abusing Cassie in a Los Angeles hotel. CNN shared the March 2016 video in May, and it showed Diddy dragging Cassie across the floor of an L.A. hotel elevator bank.

Diddy said he was “disgusted” with his behavior in the apology video that was shared on his Instagram account. “It’s so difficult to reflect on the darkest times in your life, but sometimes you got to do that,” he stated. “I was f—ed up. I mean, I hit rock bottom. But I make no excuses. My behavior on that video is inexcusable. I take full responsibility for my actions in that video. I’m disgusted. I was disgusted then when I did it, I’m disgusted now.”

Cassie accused Diddy of rape, physical abuse and more in a sprawling lawsuit in November. The two parties — who dated on and off from 2007 to 2018 — would settle the dispute less than 24 hours and terms were not disclosed. The disgraced star has also since been accused of sexual misconduct in several other lawsuits; he had previously denied all allegations.

That Time Tyler Hubbard Got Grounded for Making Out in Public? He Put It in ‘Park’

It’s arguably easier to figure a pitcher’s earned run average than to determine a car’s horsepower, and it’s a good bet that the majority of drivers don’t know how much horsepower their engine generates.

But nearly everyone realizes that a larger number equals more speed. So when Tyler Hubbard brags that he has “700 horses under the hood” in the chorus of his new single, “Park,” it’s easy to get what he’s saying. Especially since he, like most of us, understands it more as a comparative number than one he needs to calculate.

“I had a friend in college who had a super-fast car that was like a muscle car basically,” Hubbard recalls. “There was 800 horsepower. It was like a race car, and I can even go to the drag strip with it and compete. So I knew like 800 horsepower is a ton of horsepower for a car. So 700 is a souped-up car for sure.”

Trending on Billboard

It’s a detail that fits an automotive-themed T-Hub song.

“He’s always loved to go fast,” says co-writer Canaan Smith (“Famous,” “Runaway”). “Back in the day, when we first met at Belmont College, he was riding his motorcycle up and down the interstate doing wheelies at 80 miles an hour.”

“Park” emerged near the end of a songwriters retreat at the Gulf Coast home of Jesse Frasure (“Halfway To Hell,” “Young Love & Saturday Nights”). A couple different teams were working simultaneously on material for Hubbard, who ricocheted from room to room as the songs developed. They’d already built several by the time of the “Park” session, so Frasure, Smith and Ashley Gorley (“I Had Some Help,” “I Am Not Okay”) were in a position to take a few more creative risks.

“There’s a little bit of a freedom when you’ve got a couple in the can on a writing retreat,” Frasure says. “It’s very relaxing, and you’re like, ‘Okay, cool.’ So you pull up some more aggressive tracks.”

Frasure purposely introduced an instrumental track he’d created with a danceable tempo and a bright feel. “I want to put things in the artist’s pile that are fun, energetic, that you could see pyro going off on stage,” Frasure says. “The more I do this, the more that’s what I get excited about, because I just feel like that’s the soundtrack to people’s lives. People love a well-written tune, and we’ll give awards to those, but I want the one that’s gonna be on someone’s playlist on the boat.”

The track resonated in the room – Frasure’s wife, Rhythm House vp Stevie Frasure, and Hubbard’s wife, Hayley, were both grooving along with it – and the writers started sifting through ideas that would fit. Tyler was in the other writer room as they considered titles, and Gorley brought up the word “Park,” from his list. The contrast between the dance tempo and the word “Park” was worth exploring.

“To me, there’s a really interesting, cool flip in the storyline here,” Smith says. “Yes, he likes to go fast, but there’s nothing he’d rather do than just put it in park.”

When Tyler returned, he gave them a green light on the song, which was already in process, and they got the wheels turning on the chorus, launching into it with a line custom-made for Hubbard: “I can drive you from this holler to Hollywood.” The chorus explored the driving theme – the horsepower, speed and screaming tires – but made the thematic flip by the end of the chorus as the singer considers the girl riding shotgun: “All I wanna do is park.”

“It was just sort of a picture of young, innocent, and it’s fun and a little bit risky and wild,” Hubbard says. “We’ve all been there at some point in our life, and I like to think occasionally, it’s fun to just go back to that mindset.”

The two verses added some detail to the storyline: a couple kids racing through dirt roads around midnight, flirting with the thrill of driving for hours in the anonymous darkness, but flirting even more intensely with each other. As the writers cruised through the lyrics, Hubbard reconnected with one of his own experiences, making out at age 15 in his girlfriend’s car  in the church parking lot, only to have a cop interrupt, then take Hubbard home and rat him out to his parents. Hubbard was grounded for the next month.

“It was a learning lesson, for sure,” he says. “It was only a mile from the house. My dad was like, ‘Why didn’t you just come sit in the driveway?’”

Between the programmed track and the guitars in the room, the song was propelled by stacks of rhythm, and they decided to create room for a guitar solo that ultimately shifted into a short bridge. Those sections use the same four chords as the rest of the song, though they’re arranged in a different order, making that mid-song departure feel easy and natural.

“Bridges usually are for troubled waters,” Smith quips, “but we didn’t feel like this was any trouble. We wanted it to carry along and keep people immersed in what was happening, and sometimes you can do that musically with just a little reset.”

Frasure produced a brisk, almost-skipping demo that gave Hubbard and his co-producer, Jordan M. Schmidt (Mitchell Tenpenny, The Band Camino), a strong foundation. Tony Lucido’s start-and-stop bass hook, layers of guitars and Nir Z’s 700 horses of dramatic drum fills intensified the groove during a tracking session at Nashville’s Sound Stage.

“Certain songs just require certain things,” Smith reasons, “and this one definitely needed the Nir Z treatment.”

Schmidt and Jonny Fung completed the guitar-layering in overdubs, and Hubbard had a relatively easy go of it when he sang final vocals. The “All I wanna do is park” hook was likely the most difficult part of the process, since an “r” consonant can sound harsh at the end of a phrase (think Kevin Cronin singing “remember,” “together” and “forever” in the second verse of REO Speedwagon’s “Keep On Loving You”).

“It does roll off the tongue a little differently,” Hubbard allows, “but it’s somehow always felt natural and always worked, even live. I do have to be a little bit more intentional about it.”

The entire chorus fit perfectly into Hubbard’s vocal sweet spot. “His voice has always, throughout his entire career, cut really well,” Frasure says. “It’s very noticeable, and there’s certain melodies and certain tones – and certain keys, actually – with Tyler’s voice that are just money.”

EMI Nashville released “Park” to country radio via PlayMPE on June 3 as the second single from Hubbard’s album Strong. Hubbard played “Park” second in the set during Kane Brown’s In the Air Tour, though the possibility exists that he could bunch it with “Dancing in the Country” in the future to create an extended party atmosphere.

“When I get a few more singles under my belt and have a little more to play with, we could definitely make a 10- or 12-minute moment,” Hubbard says. “They do live in the same family for sure.”
