Fans Think Dr. Dre and Snoop Dogg Pulled a Long Con By Teasing ‘Death of Slim Shady’ in Liquor Ad

While you all are busy playing checkers on your phones, Eminem is playing multi-dimensional chess on his Apple Vision Pro headset. How do we know? Enterprising Stans went back to check the tape this week on an ad Dr. Dre and Snoop Dogg released in February to promote their Gin & Juice cocktails in which the pair paid homage to Quentin Tarantino’s Pulp Fiction while seemingly prepping the runway for Em’s upcoming album, The Death Of Slim Shady (Coup De Grâce).

In the two-minute spot the old friends and collaborators are dressed in black suits like the iconic film’s hitmen, Vincent Vega (John Travolta) and Jules Winnfield (Samuel L. Jackson), as they sit in a car at night and argue about doing what Snoop calls “this same dumb a– s–t again.” When Dre opens the trunk, an annoyed Snoop asks, “what the f–k am I supposed to do with this s–t?” as he stares at something in the car’s trunk that we never see.

Trending on Billboard

They proceed to put on black leather gloves and grab what appears to be a body bag and shovel out of the trunk, burying the unseen corpse in a woodland grave and then enjoying a celebratory can of their new favorite beverage (and a blunt for Snoop, of course) before things go south. At the time, one commenter on Dre’s X post of the G&J teaser quipped, “I was waiting for Eminem to jump out of the trunk.”

On Wednesday (July 10), Eminem revealed the track list for the mortality-obsessed album due out on Friday (July 12) featuring 19 tracks that appear to touch on themes including death, rebirth, evil and resolution via tracks titled “Lucifer,” “Evil,” “Antichrist,” “Somebody Save Me” and “Temporary.” The cover art is in keeping with the death becomes Em theme, as it features Slim Shady’s head peeking out of a body bag with one eye wide open and a terrified look on his face. The album is also slated to feature “Guilty Conscience 2,” a sequel to the 1999 hit featuring Dre; for now it’s unclear if the good doctor will appear on the new track.

At press time a spokesperson for Eminem had not returned Billboard‘s request for comment about the fan speculation.

Pearl Jam’s Eddie Vedder Describes ‘Frightening’ Illness That Forced Show Cancellations as ‘Near-Death Experience’

After Pearl Jam were forced to cancel shows in Berlin and London last week due to an unspecified illness affecting band members, singer Eddie Vedder opened up about what he described as a “near-death experience” during their return to stage in Barcelona over the weekend.

In video posted by fans, Vedder, 59, talked about the scary situation without revealing specific details of what the ailment was. “Can I just say that last week almost felt like a near-death experience?,” Vedder said during the show at Palau Sant Jordi in Barcelona. “It was very uncomfortable, and it got frightening. It felt like chest bronchitis. It felt like maybe you couldn’t breathe, and maybe you wouldn’t make it through the night, and maybe you’d have to go to the hospital.”

After calling off a show at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in London on June 29, the band subsequently cancelled a two-night stand at the Waldbühne in Berlin.

Trending on Billboard

Though Vedder didn’t say who in the band was affected other than a “few of us,” he came clean about what a profound impact the health scare had on him. “You just realize how precious this life is,” he said. “How lucky we are to have been living on a planet where we can go around and play to incredible people like the people in this room here tonight. So, it was a poignant experience. I won’t be forgetting it anytime soon. And we won’t be forgetting tonight anytime soon.”

Last week, Pearl Jam announced the show cancellations in a statement, writing on social media, “Despite everyone’s best efforts, the band has yet to make a full recovery. The impacts of this decision are not lost on us. We feel deeply that so many people spend their time, money and emotional energy to get tickets and then to come see the band, and it is heart-wrenching to have to disappoint you. We also appreciate the many people whose hard work goes into making these shows happen.”

The band’s next show is at the Mad Cool Festival in Madrid, Spain on Thursday (July 11). After a gig in Portugal on July 13, the band will have a month off before picking their Dark Matter world tour up again on August 22 in Missoula, MT.

Can Anyone Top Post Malone & Morgan Wallen’s ‘I Had Some Help’ as the 2024 Song of the Summer?

Is the 2024 Song of the Summer race already over or just getting started?

On the new Billboard Pop Shop Podcast, Katie & Keith are talking about who will end this summer atop our Songs of the Summer chart. Post Malone‘s “I Had Some Help,” featuring Morgan Wallen, has ruled Songs of the Summer since the chart returned in late May, but does it have some current competition that could take the lead? Or maybe a song that hasn’t even been released yet?

We consulted our Billboard colleagues Gary Trust (managing director, charts and data operations) and Jason Lipshutz (executive director, music and founding Pop Shop Podcast co-host) for their insight. They offer up what the strongest contenders are and also do some wishful thinking about how the rest of the summer could play out.

Speaking to Rolling Stone, Hilton and Trainor announced the news of the collaborative track, which will feature on Hilton’s upcoming album Infinite Icon and is co-produced by the talented Sia.

“I started working on this song years ago and knew I had to save it for someone very special. Paris brought it to a whole new level,” Meghan told the publication, adding, “I can’t believe I get to be friends with her.”

Paris added, “[Meghan] put into words an experience that was so true for me; that time in your life when you find the confidence, power, and self-love, to walk away from toxic relationships and move forward with your life.”

Trainor said of Hilton, “She is the sister I always needed and when she calls me sis, I die of happiness inside. We made something truly iconic together and it was a bucket list dream come true for me.”

This announcement comes after Hilton’s cameo in the music video for Jason Derulo and Trainor’s song “Hands On Me,” a nostalgic nod to her early 2000s reality show The Simple Life.

In a recent interview with Billboard, Paris gushed over the “All About That Base” singer. “One of my favorite features is with Meghan Trainor. She’s just so sweet and amazing. We met years ago during New York Fashion Week. She just came up to me, like, ‘I’m the third Hilton sister.’ Then I immediately just loved her so much and we became best friends.”

Hilton’s musical comeback has been hinted at since December 2022, when she re-released her debut single as “Stars Are Blind (Paris’ Version)” and performed it alongside Miley Cyrus and Sia at Cyrus’ New Year’s Eve concert in Times Square.

Her upcoming album, Infinite Icon, slated for release on September 6 during New York Fashion Week, will mark her first full-length project since her 2006 debut album Paris, which featured her biggest hit to date, “Stars Are Blind.”

The tracklist was unveiled by Apple Music on July 10, just two days prior to the album’s release. It comes following Eminem’s reveal of the album’s cover art, which features Slim Shady’s head emerging from a body bag in what seems to be a metaphor for the end of one era and the beginning of another.

The Death Of Slim Shady (Coup De Grâce) tracklist reads as follows:

  1. Renaissance
  2. Habits
  3. Trouble
  4. Brand New Dance
  5. Evil
  6. All You Got (skit)
  7. Lucifer
  8. Antichrist

  15. Temporary
  16. Bad One
  17. Tobey (featuring Big Sean and BabyTron)
  18. Guess Who’s Back (skit)
  19. Somebody Save Me

One standout track that’s bound to get longtime fans excited is “Guilty Conscience 2,” a sequel to the 1999 hit that featured Dr. Dre. With Dre having previously confirmed his involvement in Em’s latest project, expectations are high for this fresh take on a classic collab.

In the lead-up to the album, Eminem has dropped two singles that have sparked conversations and fueled anticipation. “Houdini,” released on May 31, debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard Global Charts and quickly became a topic of discussion for its intricate lyricism and controversial references.

The track samples the Steve Miller Band’s “Abracadabra” while addressing hot-button issues such as the 2020 Megan Thee Stallion shooting incident and cancel culture.

The second single, “Tobey,” featuring Big Sean and BabyTron, was released on July 8, after initially being slated for July 5. The track marked Em’s first collaboration with Babytron and his fourth with Big Sean, following their team-up in 2017 on I Decided’s “No Favors,” Detroit 2‘s “Friday Night Cypher” and ShadyXV‘s “Detroit Vs. Everybody.”

As the release date rapidly approaches, both fans and industry insiders are filled with anticipation, eager to delve into the journey through the mind of one of rap‘s most iconic figures.

The Death Of Slim Shady (Coup De Grâce) is out July 12.

Akademiks, one of Drake’s most loyal supporters, has remained steadfast in his defense of the “Hotline Bling” hitmaker throughout his ongoing beef with K.Dot.

During a May appearance on the Flagrant podcast, Akademiks argued that Drake came out on top in the conflict, highlighting the different expectations placed on the two artists.

“The rules aren’t the same for both artists… Drake has never ducked a battle. He’s always been there,” he explained.

The anticipation for new Drake music has been building, especially after his longtime producer, Gordo, hinted at a summer release. In an Instagram post featuring a photo with Drake, Gordo teased, “You guys ready for summer 2024…”

Drake’s latest chart-topping success was with his track “First Person Shooter” featuring J. Cole, which debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 on October 17, 2023.

This marked Drake’s 13th No. 1 hit, tying him with Michael Jackson for the most No. 1 singles by a solo male artist. “First Person Shooter” is from his latest album, For All the Dogs, which has already produced several other top 10 hits.

Watch 14-Year-Old’s Powerful Cover of Lesley Gore’s ‘You Don’t Own Me’ on ‘America’s Got Talent’

When Reid Wilson, a 14-year-old singer from the heart of Alabama, stepped onto the America’s Got Talent stage, his nerves were palpable.

But as soon as he began belting out Lesley Gore’s 1963 hit “You Don’t Own Me,” those nerves vanished, replaced by a voice so powerful and a presence so magnetic that it left the judges and audience stunned.

“I am definitely nervous, but I am going to put my all into this and sing my heart out and try not to miss a note,” Wilson declared before his performance. And boy, did he deliver!

The judges were clearly taken aback by Wilson’s unexpected song choice and undeniable talent.

Simon Cowell couldn’t help but admit, “We weren’t expecting that.” Heidi Klum, visibly impressed, gushed, “I think you’re absolutely incredible. I loved when you took the mic off [the stand] and gave a little more stage presence. Well done.”

Simon added that his parents must have good musical taste, to which Reid quipped “no,” getting a laugh from the judges and the audience.

Sofia Vergara, who had initially been concerned about Wilson’s nerves, was thoroughly impressed: “You were so nervous at the beginning. I was, ‘He’s not going to be able to put his stuff together,’ but you did, and you did amazingly. It sounded spectacular from here.”

But it was Howie Mandel who had the most profound reaction to Wilson’s performance.

Visibly moved, Mandel shared, “I was bowled over because I was surprised. You know what? That stage is where dreams come true. Do you believe in dreams?”

When Wilson answered affirmatively, Howie pressed the Golden Buzzer, sending a shower of glittering confetti raining down on Wilson and his proud mother, who had rushed onto the stage to embrace her son in a moment of pure joy.

Lesley Gore’s “You Don’t Own Me” was a bold choice for the young singer.

The song, which peaked at No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1964, has been a feminist anthem for decades. Written by John Madara and David White, it showcased Gore’s powerful voice and became one of her signature hits.

Gore, already famous for her hit song “It’s My Party,” recorded “You Don’t Own Me” when she was only 17 years old. It was later featured on her album Lesley Gore Sings of Mixed-Up Hearts.

Backstage, Mandel couldn’t stop raving about Wilson’s raw talent.

“I did it because of the sound and who you are was nothing close to anything I was expecting. You are a big talent,” he told the young singer, who was still trying to wrap his head around this life-changing moment.

For Wilson, whose musical hero is none other than the legendary Aretha Franklin, this is the opportunity of a lifetime.

“I would love to be the next superstar,” he confessed. “I sing at family gatherings every now and then but nothing big.”

Now, armed with a Golden Buzzer and a ticket to the live shows, Wilson has the chance to make that dream a reality.

Summer 2024 is proving to be an especially hot one, with more than 159 million people under heat alerts across the U.S., as reported by the National Integrated Heat Health Information System. Staying cool has never been more important for your safety as dehydration, heat exhaustion and other temperature related sickness are easier to obtain if you’re not careful.

Chugging water (say, from your Stanley Cup) is just one of the necessary steps you can take to beat the heat, but incorporating a personal AC or portable fan can also make a major difference in your comfort — especially while you’re at work or commuting outside. Another easy way to cool off: Amazon’s $15 neck cooling tube, which gives off a chunky necklace vibe with major “chill factor.”

Keep reading to find out exactly how this “neck cooling tube” works and shop the Amazon deal.

Neck Cooling Tube, Wearable Cooling Neck Wrap

$25.99

This neck cooling tube does exactly as its name suggests, serving as a way to keep your body temperature cool and comfortable.

The material gets down to 64 degrees when you place the wearable neck cooler in the freezer for as little as 20 minutes. Reviewers are in awe over how effective the cooling neck tube is, calling it a “personal AC unit” that doesn’t leave behind “any condensation or moisture” on your clothes (just be sure to wipe off any moisture after taking it out of the freezer). Worn like a loose necklace or wrap, the accessory can also provide up to 120 minutes of non-stop and instant cooling.

Another notable feature is its flexible body that’s made from eco-friendly materials and can adapt to your neck. You can also choose from six different colors depending on your personal preferences.

Do Neck Coolers Really Work?

Personal neck coolers can help regulate your body temperature on hot days when you’re outside or if you’re looking to save money and limit your AC use. While a portable neck cooler won’t be able to chill an entire room, it’ll act as your own personal cool breeze wherever you go — and for an affordable price.

What Are the Benefits of a Neck Cooler?

Unlike a portable AC unit, neck coolers don’t require electricity for power — just pop it in the freezer for up to 30 minutes and you’ll get immediate cooling relief. Health-wise, using a personal neck cooler will help reduce your risk of heatstroke by helping to regulate your body temperature and keep you from overheating. This is great for outdoor gatherings, beach days and festivals too.

2024 BET Awards Scored Highest Viewership With Audiences in 18-49 Demo in Five Years

The 2024 BET Awards on June 30 drew more than 3 million viewers, according to Nielsen figures. The show, which was simulcast live across 10 Paramount networks, was up 10% in impressions compared to last year. It stands as the No. 1 awards show on cable of the first half of 2024.

A total of 4.3 million viewers watched BET Awards content on premiere night, delivering a viewership increase of 10%. (That figure combines a live red-carpet show, the main telecast and an encore airing of the main telecast.)

The 2024 BET Awards scored its highest viewership with audiences in the prized 18-49 demographic in five years. It was the No. 1 show on all of TV for the day; the No. 1 cable awards show of the first half of 2024 among all audiences (18-49); and the No. 1 most social program across all of TV with 82% growth year-over-year and 10.5 million social interactions.

Trending on Billboard

BET calls the show “the most-watched culture and entertainment event on all of TV by Black audiences 18-49.” That careful wording is meant to exclude sports programming.

BET also calls the show “the most-watched Black event in America” and “the largest Black gathering for culture, entertainment, and empowerment in the country.”

The 2024 BET Awards included at least two notable firsts.

This year, the BET Awards put Black country artists at center stage for the first time. Tanner Adell performed her songs “Buckle Bunny” and “Cowboy” on the BET Amplified stage. The red-hot Shaboozey performed “A Bar Song (Tipsy),” joined by J-Kwon, whose 2004 smash “Tipsy” is interpolated in Shaboozey’s smash. “A Bar Song (Tipsy)” jumps to No. 1 on this week’s Billboard Hot 100 and holds at No. 1 on Hot Country Songs for the fourth nonconsecutive week.

In a statement, BET said “this groundbreaking inclusion of country music highlighted Black music’s rich history, diversity, and landscape” and that the show “celebrated the fullness of Black music.”

Also, Will Smith performed on the BET Awards stage for the first time, unveiling his new song “You Can Make It” alongside Kirk Franklin, Chandler Moore, and the Sunday Service Choir. Smith had co-hosted the show in 2005 with his wife, Jada Pinkett Smith, but had not previously performed on the show. This was Smith’s first awards-show performance since he was barred from Academy Awards events for 10 years in 2022 following a headline-grabbing and image-damaging incident involving Chris Rock. This is a reminder that for many Black performers seeking to mount a comeback, the surest route is through Black audiences, who will often tend to be more sympathetic.

The importance of showing up to the polls in this chaotic election year was stressed throughout the show. The show included a segment in which third-time host Taraji P. Henson conversed with Vice President Kamala Harris about the importance of voting. In his acceptance speech for album of the year, Killer Mike stressed not only the importance of voting but also getting politically involved locally year-round.

Connie Orlando, EVP of specials, music programming & music strategy, served as the executive producer for the annual show, with Jamal Noisette, SVP of tentpoles & music community engagement, for BET. Jesse Collins Entertainment is the production company for the show, with Jesse Collins, Dionne Harmon, and Jeannae Rouzan-Clay also serving as executive producers.

With the release of his latest album, The Death of Slim Shady just a few days away, Eminem is prepping to remind the world why he’s considered one of the GOAT’s of the rap game but before we get that full body of work, the greatest white rapper ever links up with some fellow Michiganders to show how they do in the Upper Midwest.

Collaborating with the likes of Big Sean and BabyTron for the visuals to “Tobey,” Eminem and company throw on some utility coveralls and get to work as they drop their bars while some CGI effects multiply their persons by the dozens for no apparent reason other than they had a decent sized budget for the video and had to do something with that money. Seriously, we don’t know why they had so many digital doubles in this video, but hey, it is what it is.

Back on the Left Coast, YG invites Lil Yachty and Babyface Ray to join him for some fun in the sun and in their visuals to “Stupid,” the trio floss all their ice, cars and stacks of cash while rolling through the streets of LA. Lil Yachty is finally stuntin’ on a boat! That took long enough.
