Shkreli’s Wu-Tang Battle, A Litigious Rock Photog, Young Thug Trial & More Top Music Law News

This is The Legal Beat, a weekly newsletter about music law from Billboard Pro, offering you a one-stop cheat sheet of big new cases, important rulings and all the fun stuff in between.

This week: Martin Shkreli argues he wasn’t required to turn over personal copies of a rare of Wu-Tang Clan album to prosecutors; a litigious rock photographer sues Warner Records in the latest of more than 50 copyright lawsuits; the new judge in Young Thug’s gang trial faces a flood of new motions; and more.

THE BIG STORY: The Plot Thickens In Wu-Tang Album Case

When Martin Shkreli was convicted of securities fraud and ordered to forfeit his copy of Wu-Tang Clan’s Once Upon a Time in Shaolin to federal prosecutors, was he allowed to retain personal copies?

PleasrDAO — a digital art collective that bought the one-of-a-kind album from the government in 2021 —certainly thinks he wasn’t. The group sued Shkreli in federal court last month, accusing him of violating that forfeiture order by retaining copies and then threatening to leak them to the public, a move it says would destroy the value of the rare album.

But in a new response last week, Shkreli’s attorneys told a very different story.

Everyone knows that when the disgraced “Pharma Bro” bought the only copy of Wu-Tang’s album in 2014, the deal came with bizarre contractual requirements — namely, that he couldn’t release it to the general public until 2103.

But Shkreli’s lawyers say the deal did allow him to make personal copies for private use. And when he turned over the physical CD to the government, his lawyers say he wasn’t required to hand over those private copies: “Defendant continues to have the right to use them to this day.”

A month into the lawsuit, two dueling visions are coming into view. Pleasr is leaning on the forfeiture order, citing a passage that banned Shkreli from taking any action that would “affect the availability, marketability or value” of the album. Defense lawyers, on the other hand, point to the government’s sale to Pleasr, arguing that the feds made no assurances that the original CD was the only copy of Shaolin in existence.

“Plaintiff was well aware that its purchase of assets from did not include any promise or expectation of ‘exclusivity’ or ‘uniqueness,’” Shkreli’s lawyers wrote. “It bought a copy of a musical work that it knew was not unique, and cannot now claim to be irreparably harmed by the existence of its non-uniqueness.”

For more, go read our full story on the Shaolin case — and stay tuned for a looming ruling from the judge on whether to impose a preliminary injunction against Shkreli.

LEGAL EXPOSURE?Neil Zlozower, a veteran rock photographer who’s snapped images of Led Zeppelin, The Rolling Stones and many other bands, filed a copyright infringement lawsuit against Warner Records, accusing the label of using his photo of Tom Petty in a Facebook post without permission. It turns out the case is hardly the first for Zlozower, who has filed a whopping 57 copyright lawsuits since 2016, targeting Universal Music Group, Spotify, Ticketmaster, Mötley Crüe and many others over alleged unauthorized use of his images.

CONCERT MELEE Chris Brown and Live Nation were sued again over an alleged melee that took place backstage at a concert in Fort Worth last week, this time by a security guard who says he was “brutally and severely” beaten when he tried to break up the fight. The lawsuit, which cites Brown’s high-profile 2009 attack on his then-girlfriend Rihanna that led to a felony conviction, comes after the alleged victims themselves filed their own separate case.

YSL CASE UPDATE – The new judge in Young Thug’s sprawling Atlanta gang trial, Judge Paige Reese Whitaker, has been greeted by a flood of new motions, including a renewed demand to release the rapper from the “torturous conditions” he’s faced while sitting in jail for more than two years. Judge Ural Glanville, who was removed from the case earlier this month after revelations of a secret meeting with prosecutors and a key witness, had repeatedly denied such requests.

SHOOTING ARRESTS – Three men were arrested in Jacksonville in connection with the deadly shooting of rapper Julio Foolio last month. Sean Gathright, 18, Alicia Andrews, 21, and Isaiah Chance Jr., 21, were each charged with premeditated first degree murder with a firearm, among other charges, over the June 23 killing.

“Mulholland Drive” parks atop Adult R&B Airplay after an 11% jump in plays that made it the most-played song on U.S. monitored adult R&B radio stations in the tracking week of July 19 – 25, according to Luminate. The new champ unseats J. Brown’s “If You Could See You” after its one-week rule.

As both of October London’s first two Adult R&B Airplay appearances have yielded No. 1s, he’s the first act to achieve the feat since Tems last year. The Afrobeats and R&B singer’s first leader came through a feature on Wizkid’s “Essence,” which dominated for 14 weeks in 2021. The second, her own “Free Mind,” posted nine weeks in charge beginning in February 2023. (An extra dimension to Tems’ achievement – “Essenc”” was the year-end No. 1 for the Adult R&B Airplay chart for 2022 and “Free Mind” took the honor the following year.)

For Snoop Dogg, his guest credit on “Mulholland Drive” gives the veteran rapper his first Adult R&B Airplay No. 1. He came close to the summit in 2018, when he and Ball Greezy featured on Lil Duval’s “Smile (Livin’ My Best Life),” which stopped at No. 2. Snoop Dogg has racked up 12 Adult R&B Airplay entries in his career; as a lead act, his best showing was a No. 20 peak for “California Roll,” featuring Stevie Wonder, in 2015.

Singer Latoiya Williams, meanwhile, grabs her first Adult R&B Airplay champ through her first time on the list.

Elsewhere, “Mulholland Drive” speeds 20-12 on the R&B/Hip-Hop Airplay chart, which ranks songs by combined audience totals from adult R&B and mainstream R&B/hip-hop radio stations. There, the track swells to 6.2 million in audience, a 16% improvement over last week.

Well, it looks like their suspicions have been confirmed, as Lil Yachty went on Instagram Live Monday (July 29) to formally announce he and Karrahbooo have parted ways. “I’mma say this s—t one time,” he told fans. “We have split ways with Karrah as far as this Concrete s—t. I have nothing bad to say, nothing negative to say about Karrah. I wish her the best in her career.”

Boat also said that he’s “never going to speak on this again,” and mentioned that he’s not looking to replace her with another female rapper.

Karrahbooo started as Yachty’s assistant and eventually showed interest in rap because she wanted to turn that into an acting career. “I’m only rapping because I saw Boat doing a movie when I was his assistant, and that’s the day I was like, ‘I want to be a rapper,’ because you can just be an actor from being a rapper if you’re fly enough. That’s how Boat did it,” she said in an interview with Montreality in November. Her rap career started to take off after she had the standout verse on the Concrete Boys’ appearance on the freestyle YouTube show On the Radar.

Karrahbooo has yet to respond to Yachty, but still refers to herself as “Concrete KB” in her Instagram bio.

Watch Charli XCX Bring ‘Brat’ Summer to Ibiza in Her Complete Boiler Room Set

Brat summer touched down in the Balearic Islands earlier this month when Charli XCX brought her Partygirl party night to Ibiza’s legendary club Amnesia for a very packed and very buzzy Boiler Room set on July 13.

The artist of the summer launched the set with Brat‘s “365,” then blazed through the album — with tracks like “Guess,” “Club classics” and more — while the crowd writhed behind her. Wearing a chic cream colored top and occasionally clutching a glass of champagne, the artist also welcomed guests including The Dare, Zoe Glitter, Alex Chapman and George Daniel, who altogether incorporated songs including Rico Nasty and Boys Noize’s “Arintintin,” Troye Sivan’s “Rush,” Da Hool’s “Meet Her at the Loveparade” and an edit of Robert Miles’ 1995 club classic “Children.”

The night’s lineup also featured Shygirl, Romy and Ladies of Leisure, the latter of whom delivered us very FOMO-inducing footage directly from the event. Watch the complete 95 minute performance below.

“The reason I love electronic music and clubs and DJs so much is that everything is endless,” XCX said in her recent Billboard cover story. “Everything can be repurposed, reimagined. As a pop writer, I find that exciting. It was cool to use Boiler Room as a space to demonstrate that artists often make five different versions of a song and the song that is put out is not the only one.”

Two Brat tracks are currently on the Hot 100, with “360” at No. 55 and “Apple” at No. 81. The album is also dominating Hot Dance/Electronic Songs with 16 tracks on the chart, the highest of which, “Apple,” is at No. 4. Brat currently sits at No. 14 on the Billboard 200.

Jelly Roll Sworn in as Deputy Sheriff in Michigan: Watch

Jelly Roll has added several new titles to his resume over the past few years, among them Billboard chart-topper, Grammy nominee, CMA Award winner and concert headliner. But earlier this week, he added a new role: Jelly Roll cut the ribbon on the Jelly Roll Music Studio at Genesee County Jail in Flint, Mich., and was sworn in as a deputy with the Community Cares Task Force.

Audacy 99.5 WYCD captured the moments as Jelly Roll was presented with an official Sheriff’s ID and a badge on July 27. “From convict to deputy,” Jelly Roll said, with the former Billboard cover star referencing his own time spent in a juvenile correctional facility as a teen. His journey from prison to stardom includes time behind bars for a felony, when he was arrested for aggravated robbery at age 16.

After swearing Jelly Roll in with the Oath of Office, Sheriff Christopher Swanson told the singer-songwriter, “This is the real deal. You walk into any facility now, you can tell them you’re a Deputy Sheriff from Genesee County.”

Jelly Roll has worked with Sheriff Swanson for several years, working with the I.G.N.I.T.E. Program and encouraging inmates to pursue their GED while serving time, in order to increase their skills level to aid in obtaining employment when released.

Coco Gauff Exits Olympics After Tearful Argument With Umpire

Tennis - Olympic Games Paris 2024: Day 4

Tennis star Coco Gauff was ousted at the Olympic Games in Paris after contesting a call with an umpire, leaving her in tears.

Reigning US Open champion Coco Gauff’s quest for Olympic gold came to an end on Tuesday (July 30) amid controversy and tears after an argument with the chair umpire over a call during the match. Gauff, who was the number 2 seed, lost 7-6(7), 6-2 to Croatia’s Donna Vekić who will continue on to the quarterfinals. Gauff’s exit was all too familiar and frustrating, as the match was held at Court Phillippe Cartier, where the French Open was held a month earlier. Then, the 20-year-old was in a similar situation arguing a call with a chair umpire during a semifinal match that she’d lose to eventual champion Iga Swiatek.

Gauff seemed set to get the victory after a good lead in the first set at 4-1 but Vekić fought her off and would take command of the match. Two games before the match ended, Gauff hit a serve and Vekić’s return landed near the baseline. A line judge had initially called the return out, but chair umpire Jaume Campistol ruled that it was in and awarded Vekić the point which made it 4-2. “I never argue these calls. But he called it out before I hit the ball,” Gauff was overheard saying to Campistol. “It’s not even a perception; it’s the rules.” She began to tear up and according to Portuguese commentator Jose Morgado, she continued: “I feel like I’m getting cheated constantly in this game. This is the 3rd time this happened to me this year”.

In the post-match press conference, Gauff was transparent about the situation. “There’s been multiple times this year where that’s happened to me — where I felt like I always have to be an advocate for myself on the court,” she said, calling for video reviews to be instituted in tennis while acknowledging the moment wouldn’t have meant victory: “I can’t say I would have won the match if I would have won that point.” Gauff, who was one of the flag bearers for the United States at the opening ceremony, is set to take the court again with teammate Taylor Fritz for the first round of mixed doubles. “I want to come home with something,” she stated. She’s also partnered with Jessica Pegula to compete in women’s doubles.

In the 11-minute clip, Eminem argues with Slim Shady, with Em calling out Slim for being too aggressive and controversial while Slim says Em’s entire career success can be attributed to him. “You’re not f—ing Taylor Swift. You had one ‘era’ that mattered. Mine. Everything people think of when they think of Eminem is f—ing yours truly,” Slim quips.

The duo make a series of references to a number of stars throughout the series, including Richard Gere as the original title for 2005’s “FACK,” Vanilla Ice in an old age joke, MGK in reference to their years-long feud and Ja Rule, Moby, Fred Durst and Christina Aguilera as the sarcastically labeled “lyrical titans” that Em has dissed over the years.

Elsewhere in the interview, the duo make references to Drake’s “Family Matters” when the conversation of weight arose. “We cured fatness. There’s literally a shot for it. It’s very popular,” Em tells Slim, in reference to the type 2 diabetes drug Ozempic, which is often used by celebrities for weight loss.

“I hear it’s got side effects of jealousy,” Slim said, mocking Drake’s “Family Matters” lyric, before Eminem dubs Slim “BBL Slizzy.”

At the end of the series, Em and Slim ultimately come to an understanding and settle their beef. “Look at us. Hey, look at us. Who would’ve thought? Not me,” the duo conclude, in reference to Paul Rudd’s Hot Ones episode and the meme it inspired.

The Death of Slim Shady served as the Detroit legend’s 12th studio album and delivered his 10th consecutive Billboard 200-topper. TDOSS debuted with 281,000 total album-equivalent sales in the first week to end Swift’s three-month run atop the chart.

Megan Thee Stallion Will Perform At Upcoming Rally For VP Kamala Harris In Atlanta, The Hotties & K-Hive Are Hyped

Kamala Harris is quickly rallying Democrat support after President Joe Biden ended his re-election campaign and backed his VP as the Democratic Nominee for POTUS. Now, she has one of the most prominent artists in the world backing her, Megan Thee Stallion.

Megan Thee Stallion is ensuring she is on the right side of history.

Unlike her peers in the Hip-Hop space, such as Swae Lee, Sexxy Red, Lil Pump, and other irrelevant acts, Megan Thee Stallion isn’t stumping for Donald Trump, but she will be twerking for Harris.

Now, before yall lose your sh*t, she will cement her support for the MVP and hopefully the 47th President of the United States when she takes the stage during Harris’ first Presidential Rally in Atlanta, which was ironically the death of the current President Joe Biden’s campaign following a poor debate performance.

Team Harris > Team Trump

Thee Stallion is the latest musician to support VP Harris. Beyoncé let the world know she was down with the Harris campaign by allowing her to use her song “Freedom” as walkout music. It was also featured in the first television ad announcing her presidential campaign.

John Legend will be at the DNC in August, where Harris will undoubtedly earn the nomination as the Democrat’s choice to take on Donald Trump in the upcoming election.

Taylor Swift is also rallying her Swifties to support VP Harris and ensure that Trump does not regain the White House.

Cardi B has shown support for Vice President Harris but has stopped short of endorsing her, conditioning her support on Harris securing a ceasefire in Gaza.

Hopefully, Cardi B knows that VP Harris can’t make that happen alone.

Still, Harris has made it clear after meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu that it’s time for the war to end, and a two-state solution should be the end goal.

Compared to the Republicans rolling out acts like Kid Rock, Amber Rose, and other musical acts that no one gives a damn about, the Democrats have an all-star lineup looking to help our MVP finally break the glass ceiling that Hillary Clinton fell short of doing during the 2016 election.

As expected, the Hotties and the K-Hive are excited about the news of Megan Thee Stallion performing at the VP Harris rally.

You can see those reactions in the gallery below.

1. We are hyped
