LL Cool J Defends Excluding Jay-Z & DMX From Def Jam Mount Rushmore

LL Cool J caused a bit of a stir a couple weeks ago during an appearance on Shannon Sharpe’s Club Shay Shay.

The NFL Hall of Famer asked the Queens rapper turned actor who he would pick to be on Def Jam’s Mount Rushmore. Naturally, LL put himself on there, given that his debut single “I Need a Beat” and debut album Radio were the first official releases on the fabled rap label. He also picked groups Public Enemy and the Beastie Boys, and had Slick Rick round things out. Shannon Sharpe pushed back about leaving Jay-Z off, but had to remind him that the rapper was on the label “a thousand years later.”

His picks caused a bit of controversy online because some felt Jay-Z and DMX should’ve been on his list, however, the rap legend based his picks on the acts that helped build Def Jam from the ground up. While making an appearance on the Joe Budden Podcast, LL defended his reasoning.

“I know DMX is supremely talented, used to kill the stage, sold a ton of records. I know Jay did a ton of stuff up there… I can name a zillion artists up there who did unbelievable shit up there. I’m very clear about that,” he said. “But I also know that when I walked into Rick Rubin’s dormitory, it was a f—king idea, bro, like you trying to talk to me about guys that are popular. I watched the sh—t when it was a f—king idea on a Post-It. It’s two different conversations.”

Adding, “The world is talking about the most popular. That’s all they care about. Who’s the most popular, who’s the richest, who sold the most records, who was exciting. I get that, and I respect it, I love it. But that’s not what built the company, that’s what expanded the company at a different point.”

He also reminded detractors that his song “4,3,2,1” helped introduce DMX to a larger audience. “I introduced DMX to the world, you think I don’t love DMX?” he asked. “I put him on my song to introduce him to the f—king world. I put the guy on. You know what I’m saying?”

Billie Eilish Is Spotify’s Most Streamed Monthly Artist | Billboard News

Billie Eilish has officially taken the crown from The Weeknd from The Weeknd as the most streamed artist on Spotify. Keep watching for more!

Tetris Kelly:

Billie Eilish is the queen of Spotify while getting real about her song “Lunch.” Billie is officially the most streamed monthly artist on Spotify. She took the title from The Weeknd, who posted on X last week, “Let’s go!” when he found out she was less than a million listeners away from his top spot. She posted the achievement on IG saying, “number 1 in the world on spotify i really can’t even believe this. i love you all so much this is the craziest thing ever.” It’s no surprise after performing at the closing ceremonies at the Olympics and topping both the Global 200 and Global Excluding US with her hit, “BIRDS OF A FEATHER.” But it’s her song “Lunch” that she’s talking about now. She said in her VEVO Footnotes that the hardest part of the shoot was eating from the giant table of food. She would later take a bite and spit it out, but not until she was full from actually eating all of it. Well, she was the director, so it was all up to her. But at least it turned out great.

Ghareeb Al Mokhles Is Elevating the Shelat Genre to New Heights

Under the embrace of the afternoon sun in Diriyah, a city known as the birthplace of the first Saudi state and a symbol of the Kingdom’s rich history, Billboard Arabia meets August cover star Ghareeb Al Mokhles for a photoshoot and an interview. In this captivating setting, Ghareeb’s enthusiasm and radiant smile reflect his deep connection to his roots. From the outset, it was clear that Ghareeb was fully at ease in this atmosphere, ready to share his insights into Shelat – a music genre known for its rhythms and vibrant melodies, with lyrics built upon colloquial Bedouin poetry.

After the photo session, the artist moves to the interview location with a calm and composed demeanor. Ghareeb is calm albeit passionate about his work and the genre of music he performs. He proudly identifies as a son of “Najran” and a devoted Shelat enthusiast, passionately discussing his lifelong love for music. He credits his inspiration to his older brother Talal and iconic artists like Mohammed Abdu and Khalid bin Abdulrahman, fondly recalling his early artistic experiences, including performing national anthems and songs during his school years.

Trending on Billboard

As he shares these memories, it is clear that his deep-rooted connection to his heritage and his unwavering passion for Shelat continue to shape his artistic journey. Delving into the origins and essence of Shelat, Ghareeb explains that it is “an ancient folk heritage that has evolved into an artistic form distinct from conventional songs, marked by its Bedouin influences.” Traditionally, Shelat consists of poetic verses sung to specific melodies, often performed a cappella with echoes, originally by camel herders and during special occasions like weddings. Over time, this tradition expanded with the addition of music and instrumental arrangements, evolving into the Shelat genre we recognize today. “We’ve added rhythms and beats to it, we’ve added instrumentation.”

Ghareeb’s foray into producing Shelat began as an experimental project shared on social media in the mid-2010s. To his surprise, the overwhelmingly positive response and high demand for his work in this genre ignited a deeper passion within him. Reflecting on this, Ghareeb notes, “The audience’s enthusiasm fueled my passion for Shelat, turning it into a genuine talent. I fully embraced this art and continued to pursue it.”

Nearly a decade later, Ghareeb has established himself as a leading figure in the genre, amassing millions of views across various platforms. His 2021 release of the Shelat “Kheeba” (Disappointment) exemplifies this success, garnering nearly 240 million views on YouTube alone. He describes it as a defining moment in his career: “It marked a significant turning point for me. I was able to truly showcase my talents, and I’m deeply grateful for the success it brought. This Shelat song holds a special place in my heart, and each of my works has built upon the foundation laid by the previous ones.”

This success culminated in a record-breaking milestone, with his YouTube channel surpassing one billion views. Ghareeb credits this achievement to the widespread popularity of his Shelat, stating, “This figure reflects the audience’s appreciation of what I offer.”

Capitalizing on this record-breaking moment in the world of Shelat, we ask Ghareeb about his reaction to reaching his first million views, “It was an incredible joy,” he says. “I was in the south (of Saudi Arabia), eagerly waiting for that million. I stayed up all night.” This milestone has solidified Ghareeb’s status in the Shelat industry. Not only has he advanced the genre, infusing it with new musical and artistic dimensions, but he is also frequently cited on social media as a trailblazer in the field. His lyrics, known for their simplicity, are a key part of his appeal. During our conversation, Ghareeb emphasizes his commitment to choosing clear and straightforward lyrics to connect with a wider audience.

Each artist is distinguished by their unique use of color and thematic elements in their music and lyrics, and this is particularly evident in Ghareeb’s work. His standout tracks, such as “Kheeba” (Disappointment) and “al-Boad Motei” (Distance Is My Demise), vividly capture the themes of separation and sorrow that often follow farewells. In the interview, Ghareeb talks about his preference for “melodies and tranquility in melancholic compositions” and shares his deep-seated admiration for Khalid bin Abdulrahman’s work since childhood. When asked if his life was marked by sorrow, Ghareeb responds, “No, thank God. May God keep sadness away from us and you. I just have a deep affinity for melancholic moods.”

Contrary to the belief that Shelat is reserved for specific occasions or exclusive to Gulf listeners, Ghareeb explains that Shelat is versatile, performed across various settings, and resonates with audiences beyond the Gulf and the Arab world. Ghareeb elaborates on the multifaceted nature of Shelat encompassing a range of themes such as expressions of reproach and sorrow, tributes to distinguished camels, celebratory pieces for weddings, and renowned tribal Shelat that convey praise and pride at family events. He also makes note of his fan base spanning South Asia, including India and Southeast Asia, including Indonesia, underscoring the genre’s broad appeal.

The rising success of young Shelat artists like Ghareeb Al Mokhles signifies that this art form is far from a transient fad; it is a dynamic and evolving genre. Its increasing popularity is reflected in the growing streaming numbers and a steadily expanding audience, and the launch of Billboard Arabia’s Shelat chart.

For The Tortured Poets Department hit, “Florida!!!,” Swift surprised fans with her collaborator, Florence Welch of Florence + The Machine. The duo performed the track in coordinating white flowing dresses. “I need to forget, so take me to Florida/ I’ve got some regrets, I’ll bury them in Florida/ Tell me I’m despicable, say it’s unforgivable/ At least the dolls are beautiful, f— me up, Florida,” they sang together on the track.

In an interview with British Vogue earlier this year, Welch explained that she didn’t know the “scale” of Swift’s fame. “There’s the sort of bigness of [Taylor Swift the phenomenon], and then there’s the Taylor I spend time with in the studio, who is just the sweetest and most down to earth,” she told the publication

She continued, “We had such a fun time. And then when it came out I was like, ‘Oh, s—!’”

Swift also previously explained the narrative that inspired “Florida!!!” during an interview with iHeartRadio. “‘Florida!!!’ is a song I wrote with Florence and the Machine, and I think I was coming up with this idea of like, what happens when your life doesn’t fit, or your choices you’ve made catch up to you,” Swift said.

She added that she’s a fan of Dateline and noticed how “people have these crimes that they commit, where do they immediately skip town and go to? They go to Florida.”

Fans React to Doja Cat & Joseph Quinn’s Years-in-the-Making Dating Rumors: ‘SHE GOT HIM’

Doja Cat and Joseph Quinn are painting the town red with their rumored new romance — with the pair stepping out in London holding hands over the weekend — and fans have a lot to say on the matter.

The public’s first sighting of the apparent couple came Aug. 17, when the rapper and A Quiet Place: Day One star took a romantic stroll through the city with their fingers locked, as captured in photos. The next day, a video surfaced of them again walking through London, this time with Quinn’s hand on Doja’s back.

The outings come a full two years after the “Woman” artist first professed feelings for the actor in a private message sent to his Stranger Things costar Noah Schnapp, who then got on Doja’s bad side by posting screenshots to social media. “Noah can u tell Joseph to hmu.” she’d written in the messages. “Wait no. Does he have a gf?”

Shortly after Schnapp posted the DMs, Doja called him out on Instagram Live for being “so unbelievably, like, socially unaware and wack.” “That’s like borderline snake sh–,” she added at the time. “That’s like weasel sh–.”

The child star then apologized to the Grammy winner behind the scenes, and both moved on. Two years later, things clearly had a happy ending, with fans now taking to social media to congratulate Doja on playing the long game. “this gossip is so juicy TO ME bc i witnessed the doja cat tweets thirsting over joseph with my own eyes back in 2022,” one person tweeted.

“SHE GOT HIM,” another person wrote, sharing an old screenshot of Doja tweeting, “joseph quinn fine as sh–” in 2022 alongside the 2024 video of them walking through London.

Doechii has been feeding fans with her “Swamp Sessions” throughout summer Fridays, which acts as more of a creative exercise for her. “I set a timer for an hour and I write a song. The Democratic National Convention is officially underway, and Vice President Kamala Harris couldn’t wait until the final night to hit the stage.

The Democratic nominee for president of the United States made a surprise appearance on Tuesday night at the United Center in Chicago, on night one of the Democratic National Convention.

VP Harris hit the stage in what many consider the ultimate troll move, rocking a tan Chloé pants suit while her official campaign anthem, Beyoncé’s “Freedom,” blared throughout the arena.

Saving her full remarks for when she takes the stage on Thursday, the final day of the four-night convention, the presidential hopeful briefly addresses the surprised roaring crowd, which includes her husband, the second gentleman, Doug Emhoff.

Per The Daily Beast:

“Tonight I see the beauty of our great nation,” Harris continued. “People from every corner of our country and every walk of life are here, united by our shared vision for the future of our country.

“And this November we will come together and declare with one voice, as one people: We are moving forward… guided by our love of country, knowing we all have so much more in common than what separates us.

“Let us fight for the ideals we hold dear—and let us always remember when we fight…”

The crowd erupted, chanting back “We win!”

VP Harris’ Surprise Appearance Was One Of The Night’s Many Highlights

Harris’ surprise appearance, along with speeches from fellow Democrats like U.S. Reps. Jasmine Crockett and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, former First Lady and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, U.S. Senator Raphael Warnock, current First Lady Jill Biden, and others, set the stage for current POTUS Joe Biden, who closed out the night with a powerful speech.

During his speech, Biden touted his administration’s many accomplishments, thanked the voters, praised his VP, and officially passed the torch to her on the stage.

Night one of the DNC was a stark contrast to the RNC and showed how much better a convention is when you have permission to use artists’ songs and a way better lineup of speakers.

Users on X, formerly Twitter, couldn’t get enough of VP Harris and her tan drip.

You can see those reactions in the gallery below.

DNC Host Tony Goldwyn Says a Taylor Swift or Beyoncé Endorsement of Kamala Harris Would Be ‘Significant’

Additionally, the Scandal star opened up about what it would mean if Harris got an official endorsement from major music stars including Taylor Swift or Beyoncé. “I think this one is going to be won on the margins so every bit helps. I really hope they do come out for her because from what I read and can see Kamala’s values align with theirs. They’re incredibly powerful women and I think it could be significant. I don’t know if many people vote based on how their music icons vote but just as in sports, momentum is everything. If you can add to that momentum, it’s only to the good.”

While Swift hasn’t officially endorsed Harris, some fans think she may have subtly hinted that she’s on the Democratic nominee’s side via Instagram. A Harris-like silhouette appears in the background of a photo the star posted of her Warsaw Eras Tour performances at PGE Narodowy, walking in the opposite direction upstage wearing a pantsuit and giving a presidential wave. However, a source close to the pop superstar told The Hollywood Reporter that the shadowy figure was simply the silhouette of one of the background singers.

Meanwhile, Harris is a huge fan of Queen Bey. Last month, Harris appeared in a campaign staff meeting in Wilmington, Del., walking out to Beyoncé‘s 2016 hit, “Freedom.”

Bey’s mother, Tina Knowles, has openly supported Harris on social media. “New, Youthful, Sharp , , energy !!!! You asked for it and our President Biden did what was best for the country ! Putting personal Ego , power and fame aside . That is the definition of a great leader, . Thank you, President Biden for your service and your leadership . Go Vice President Kamala Harris for President. Let’s Go #kamala2024,” she wrote in an Instagram post, featuring a photo of her with the VP at her daughter’s Renaissance World Tour.
