The opening theme song for each of the 10 episodes, “El César del Box,” is performed by Banda MS de Sergio Lizárraga and was released Wednesday (Aug. 28) across digital platforms.

“We have a very good relationship with the champion and the people in his office,” Lizárraga, the group’s leader and producer of the song, told Billboard Español. “When the project was put together, he didn’t hesitate to call us and ask us for the song, which for us is a great honor.”

Trending on Billboard

“When he heard the song was already finished, he loved it. Very nice things came from there,” he added. “We sang it to him live and he was moved to tears.”

Released under Lizárraga’s label, Lizos Music, and charged with their usual Sinaloan banda sound, “El César del Box” tells in broad strokes the life of the pugilist, in first person. “Mis hijos los traigo en la mente/ Bajo el ring los golpes son más fuertes/ Toquéqué el cielo, ya conocí el suelo/ Y aún sigo en el top/ Yo soy Julio Chávez/ Más bien/ Soy el César del boxeo,” goes part of the lyrics. That translates to, “I have my children in my mind/ Under the ring the blows are stronger/ I touched the sky, I already knew the ground/ And I am still on top/ I am Julio Chávez/ Rather, I am the Caesar of boxing.

Chávez’s life has been full of emotional moments, with highs and lows that include drug problems. For this reason, said Lizárraga, writing about his life was a challenge for composer Omar Robles, who is responsible for Banda MS hits such as the romantic “El Color de Tus Ojos.”

“They gave us the freedom to talk about his life. The only request was that we focus on the positive things and the achievements of the champion,” said Lizárraga.

For the music video, Banda MS invited Chávez to Mazatlán, where the star was “always in good spirits and willing to work for the 16 hours” of filming. The clip shows the fighter, accompanied by Banda MS, simulating his triumphant entrance into the ring.

At 62 years old, JC Chávez, as he is also known, can boast of having made history in the super featherweight, lightweight and super lightweight divisions, becoming the pride of an entire country.

“Personally I consider myself a fan of boxing and of course of Julio César Chávez’s career,” said Lizárraga, noting that the sport has given Mexicans many joys, including recently at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, where Mazatlán’s Marco Verde won a silver medal.

He also recalled with emotion Chávez’s historic fight against American Meldrick Taylor on March 17, 1990: “It was defined in the last round by a knockout when it was felt that it was already lost. And then came that blow that made our champion greater.”

Grammy Eligibility Period Closes on Friday: It’s Time to Get Those Entries In

There are just two more days for current voting and professional members of the Recording Academy to enter recordings for the 67th annual Grammy Awards. The submission window closes Friday (Aug. 30) at 6 p.m. PT.

The entry process has changed in recent years. There used to be no limit to the number of entries members could make. Some members took advantage of that liberal policy and submitted a large number of entries, causing the entry list to bloat. The Academy now allows each voting or professional member just five “courtesy entries” before charges apply.

Furthermore, in an effort to get procrastinators to make their entries in timely fashion, those entry fees escalate the closer we get to the eligibility cut-off. The charge for members was $40 per entry from July 17-July 31 (what the Academy calls “early bird pricing”) and $75 per entry from Aug. 1-Aug. 22 (standard pricing). In this final week, it is $125 per entry (final deadline pricing). (In all cases, these are the charges for entries beyond the five courtesy entries.)

Trending on Billboard

In its rules, the Academy notes: “There will be no refunds for any entries once submitted to the Recording Academy, including those entries found to be ineligible.”

Media companies may also enter entries, but they don’t get five courtesy entries. And their charges were higher for the first two submission submission periods – $65 through July 31 and $95 through Aug. 22. The final deadline pricing charge for media companies is the same as for members – $125 through Aug. 30.

The Recording Academy defines a media company as “a legitimate business entity whose core business function is to create, aggregate and promote audio and/or video content for multiple artists for commercial purposes, and must have product in national U.S. commercial distribution on our approved streaming platforms within the current eligibility period. It cannot just be an imprint in name only for the artist.” Media companies pay an annual $180 registration fee.

It is the submitter’s responsibility to provide streaming links or physical product in some cases. “Without streaming links or commercially released product (if applicable), your entries cannot be screened or verified, which can result in disqualification,” the Academy notes.

Physical product must be submitted for consideration in five craft categories – best recording package, best boxed or limited edition package, best immersive audio album, best album notes and best historical album. Rules note “If you made entries in craft categories that require physical product, you will receive a separate email detailing the product required and further shipping instructions. Include a copy of the packing list with shipped product. Send in as soon as possible but no later than Sept. 6.”

No physical product is necessary in six other craft categories – best engineered album, non-classical; best engineered album, classical; best immersive audio album; best instrumental composition; best arrangement, instrumental or acapella; and best arrangement, instruments and vocals.

The Academy notes “Prior to the first round of voting [which opens on Oct. 4], we will be sending each submitter an email showing final category placement of their entries.”

The eligibility period for the 67th Grammy Awards is Sept. 16, 2023 – Aug. 30, 2024. First-round voting runs from Oct. 4 through Oct. 15. Nominees will be announced on Nov. 8. Final-round voting runs from Dec. 12 through Jan. 3, 2025. The Grammys will be presented on Feb. 2, 2025 at Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles.

Ariana Grande & The Weeknd Celebrate 10 Years of ‘My Everything’: ‘I Am Deeply, Eternally Grateful’

Ariana Grande is continuing her 10-year celebration of her sophomore project, My Everything.

The superstar took to Instagram to announce that she released a limited 7″ vinyl bundle featuring “Problem,” “Break Free,” “Love Me Harder” and “One Last Time,” in addition to a digital bundle with a capella and instrumental versions of those same singles as well as “Bang Bang” on Tuesday.

“i love you all so, very much and i am deeply, eternally grateful,” she wrote in her Instagram post, which features photos from the 2014 era of the project.

As always, her longtime collaborator The Weeknd, who teamed up with Grande on “Love Me Harder,” shared love for his pal on his Instagram Stories. “10 years,” he wrote alongside a white heart, while re-sharing Grande’s Instagram post.

Last week, Grande announced new vinyl and digital deluxe editions of the Billboard 200 chart-topping project, which also dominated the Billboard Hot 100 top 10 with hits such as “Break Free,” “Love Me Harder” with The Weeknd and “Problem” featuring Iggy Azalea. The pink-tinted vinyl, which is available on Grande’s website, features the original set’s track list plus songs that were previously never made available in the format: “Bang Bang,” “Only 1,” “You Don’t Know Me,” “Cadillac Song” and “Too Close.”

Eleven years ago, Grande’s debut project, Yours Truly, also debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 albums chart, but she told Billboard in 2014 that she allowed herself to celebrate for only about an hour before immediately getting back to work on the project that would become My Everything. “I’m a workaholic, and a perfectionist,” she said at the time. “I never thought I’d be able to say this, but I love this

five times as much as I love Yours Truly. They’re different, but I love this one so much more.”

Pulse Nightclub Owners Won’t Be Charged in Fatal Mass Shooting, Police Say

Eight years after the deadly mass shooting at Pulse nightclub in June 2016, local police closed their investigation into the venue’s former owners, with no charges being filed.

In an emailed statement to The Associated Press, the Orlando Police Department stated it was closing its probe into Barbara and Rosario Poma after finding no probable cause for involuntary manslaughter by culpable negligence.

Billboard has reached out to the Orlando Police Department for confirmation.

In 2023, multiple survivors and family members of those who were killed in the shooting filed complaints with the police department, claiming that the owners’ violations of building codes — including capacity restrictions, unpermitted renovations and inaccessible building plans — prevented first responders from being able to properly access the club after the shooting.

While interviewers were not able to contact the Pomas, the report concluded that renovations to the building did not negatively impact police’s ability to respond to the threat and that there was no sufficient proof to determine how many patrons were in the bar the night of the shooting or how the gunman was able to enter the building.

According to AP, the report states that investigators determined the owners did not act “with a reckless disregard for human life” and concluded that “they could not have reasonably foreseen or anticipated a terrorist incident taking place at Pulse.”

On June 12, 2016, a shooter entered Pulse nightclub and opened fire, killing 49 people in what was then the deadliest mass shooting on American soil. (It was surpassed the following year when 61 people were killed during the 2017 Route 91 country music festival in Las Vegas).

J. Prince Reacts to YSL Woody Allegedly Comparing Him to Young Thug During Police Interview

J. Prince isn’t happy with YSL Woody and the prosecutors handling the ongoing YSL RICO trial.

Earlier this week, the prosecution once again called Woody to the stand to ask him about statements he’s made to police. In one instance captured on video and shared on social media, a prosecutor asked about Woody allegedly mentioning J. Prince’s name when being questioned about Young Thug.

“Now Mr. Copeland, in this June 10 interview, you made a reference that Thug was trying to be like the J. Prince of Atlanta,” asked a prosecutor. “Do you recall hearing that?” Woody answered,”I guess,” before adding, “I don’t know. I told you for the 10th time, I’m gonna tell the police anything, and that’s what I did.”

The Rap-A-Lot founder didn’t take too kindly to being mentioned by the prosecution, and he let it be known by posting a clip of Woody’s testimony on Instagram. “Nothing surprises me anymore when it comes to fake-ass people putting my name in their mouth,” he wrote. “But I still find it very interesting how some prosecutors will go above and beyond the call of duty to try and destroy a man’s life for being inspired by a successful Black entrepreneur like myself. Btw, Black-on-Black racism feels the worst. #freeyoungthug”

Billboard has reached out to YSL Woody for comment.

While on the stand, Woody grew increasingly frustrated with the prosecution’s line of questioning as he repeatedly told them that he lied to police while being interviewed. “I told you that I lied and I told you that, and y’all still brought me in here,” he said before the judge allowed him to get off the stand briefly to collect himself.

Missy Elliott Must Face Trial in Lawsuit From Alleged 1990s Co-Writer — Though Not Over Aaliyah Song

A federal judge says Missy Elliott must face trial in a lawsuit filed by a man who claims to have co-written several of her decades-old songs, though the judge dismissed allegations over one particular song released by Aaliyah.

In a ruling Tuesday (Aug. 27), Judge Nitza I. Quiñones Alejandro refused to dismiss a lawsuit filed by Terry Williams, who claims he and Elliott collaborated on numerous songs in the 1990s but that she refused to credit him as a co-writer.

For four of the five allegedly co-written songs — tracks released by her 1990s R&B group Sista — Elliott’s attorneys argued that she did not even meet Williams until after the songs had been produced. But Williams disputes that point, and the judge said a jury would have to decide who was right.

Trending on Billboard

“Considering these conflicting arguments and evidence, a genuine issue of material fact exists as to whether Williams and Elliott were working together at the time of the production of the SISTA album … and whether Williams’ contributions to the Unpublished Songs were used on derivative songs released on the album,” Judge Alejandro wrote.

However, the judge did toss out one of Williams’ key allegations: that he and Elliott had co-written “Heartbroken,” a 1996 track released by the late Aaliyah. The judge ruled Williams had known for decades that he had not been credited on the track but waited until 2018 to sue — meaning his efforts to sue over the song are barred by the statute of limitations.

“Considering the success of Aaliyah’s One in a Million album, on which ‘Heartbroken’ was released, and Williams’ work in the music industry after the album’s release, including with Elliott, a reasonable person in Williams’ position would have been on notice of the use of his unpublished song in the purportedly derivative song Heartbroken by Aaliyah,” Judge Alejandro wrote.

Monday’s ruling does not mean Williams has won his lawsuit. The decision, which largely rejected Elliott’s motion for so-called summary judgment, leaves the case headed toward a trial, where Williams will need to prove his allegations in front of a jury.

Neither side immediately returned requests for comment on Wednesday.

Ticket Prices Are Higher Than Ever. Will Fans Keep Paying?

Sturgill Simpson is keeping it simple for his Why Not? Tour this fall.

The country artist announced on his website in July that although he and his team were “doing everything in our power to keep tickets in the hands of fans and out of the hands of scalpers,” they were opting out of using dynamic pricing for the 37-date run.

Although dynamic pricing is one of the concert business’ most effective tools for keeping tickets off the secondary market, it’s also a major factor in the sharp rise of ticket prices, and Simpson was taking his fans’ wallets into account.

For years, promoters put tickets on sale at a handful of price points, then watched them sell out and get listed with huge markups on the secondary market — revenue that would not accrue to them.

Since then, scalpers have hacked most efforts to foil them, including one of the strategies Simpson is employing: vetting presale buyers. The only proven deterrent has been dynamic pricing: charging what the market will bear during the initial on-sale in hopes of curbing secondary markups.

Trending on Billboard

In the early days of the music industry’s post-pandemic return to live shows, when pent-up demand led to robust sales, dynamic pricing became the go-to strategy for major acts. The move helped lead to a 30% rise in ticket prices from 2019 to 2024, however, according to Billboard Boxscore, with the average ticket price of a top 40-grossing tour jumping $111 to $144 at midyear 2024 — 6.6% in the past six months.

With the pandemic in the rearview mirror, many in the industry express concern about the sustainability of this upswing. In recent weeks, The Black Keys, Jennifer Lopez and other high-profile artists have canceled tours due to backlash over ticket prices. (The Black Keys fired their management in the aftermath.)

According to Billboard Boxscore, only a handful of acts can charge more than $200 a ticket and sell out, and yet more artists are pushing the boundaries on ticket price and quickly approaching average ticket prices between $150 to $200, getting very close to the ceiling of what fans can or will pay.

“Patronage is up — we are seeing more fans come out to shows, but our costs are eating into the increase in volume,” said Morgan Margolin, CEO of Knitting Factory Entertainment, who says agents and managers are charging 30% to 40% more for acts than they did prior to the pandemic.

“It’s getting more difficult to do business in the major markets, especially with minimum wage increases, insurance, rent, and other costs,” he added. “If artists and managers and agents keep escalating on top of those fees, where is the tipping point?”

The Black Keys successfully played U.S. arenas in the past but only a handful. Most of their dates were either festival slots or amphitheater and theater shows. In 2019, they grossed $28 million on their co-headlining Let’s Rock run with Modest Mouse. Tickets for that tour started at $36.50, with four price points under $100. For the band’s canceled International Players Tour, some tickets were priced at $59.75 and $89.75 but others were listed for $119.75, $159.75 and $199.75. In comparison, the bulk of Simpson’s tickets are selling in the $53 to $72 range.

Pricing tickets based on how much scalpers might profit is difficult and risky. If they are overpriced and the tour flops on the initial on-sale, it’s almost impossible to save. Reducing the price can alienate fans who paid the full cost. Stay the course, and if the tour is deemed a loser, fans will avoid it.

“I think a lot of these artists are getting bad advice and not thinking through the long-term consequences of chasing big bucks,” one arena booking executive says. “And that’s going to hurt them in the long run.”

A version of this story will appear in the Aug. 31, 2024 issue of Billboard.
