Katy Perry Returns With New Album ‘143’ | Billboard News

The wait is over! Katy Perry’s sixth studio album, 143, is out and we’re breaking it down for you. Comment below what your favorite track is!

Tetris Kelly:
A pop queen has returned. After teasing us with three singles, Katy Perry’s sixth album has arrived and we’re breaking down some of the best tracks. This is music you should know: Katy Perry’s 143.

The album’s rollout started with “Woman’s world” and its bombastic music video, followed by EDM beats of “Lifetimes.” And after her and Doechii slayed a video and VMA performance of “I’m His, He’s Mine,” what other tasty tracks should you sample? She nabbed Kim Petras for “Gorgeous” and 21 Savage for “Gimme Gimme,” but our favorite pick currently is the epic Katy Perry anthem “Wonder.”

Katy Perry’s 143 is out now.

How RCA Racked Up Alternative Radio Success With Cage The Elephant & Myles Smith

There are a lot of recognizable names on Billboard’s Alternative Airplay chart: Green Day, Jack White and Linkin Park are all in the top 10, to name a few. But this week, one of the most successful bands in the chart’s history spends a second week at No. 1: Cage The Elephant, whose latest single “Rainbow” becomes their 12th leader on the chart, tying Linkin Park and the Foo Fighters for the third-most all time.

That’s a significant milestone for both the band and its label, RCA Records. But RCA’s success atop Alternative Airplay goes deeper, and more unconventional, this week: Myles Smith’s breakout single “Stargazing” reaches No. 2 on the chart, giving the label the top two songs there for the week. And Smith’s achievement is all the more remarkable because the song is his first charting hit in the U.S., a relative rarity for an artist making waves at alternative. And that one-two punch success helps RCA’s senior vp of pop/rock promotion Gary Gorman earn the title of Billboard’s Executive of the Week.

Trending on Billboard

Here, Gorman explains the strategies that helped RCA hit those marks, the differences between veteran acts and new artists at alternative radio and how the promotions job has changed over the course of his extensive career. “The information and technology we have now vs. 15 years ago is staggering and allows us to be more strategic than ever,” Gorman says. “The bones of this job are, however, still the same. I expect that to continue, as long as music programing at radio is still editorialized.”

This week, Cage The Elephant spent its second week at No. 1 on Alternative Airplay with “Rainbow,” tied with Foo Fighters and Linkin Park for third-most all time, with 12 No. 1s. What key decisions did you make to help make that happen?

Cage The Elephant is a Goldilocks band for the alternative format. Their history of No. 1 songs and alternative chart success coming into the Neon Pill album cycle was undeniable. Not to mention, for my money, they are one of the most consistently ferocious live bands in the space. That being said, multiple No. 1s from any campaign are promised to no one, so a lot of the strategy here lies in the long tail of the promotional campaign and how to outline a comprehensive 24-plus-month plan. Our partners at Q Prime are an incredible asset and invaluable in all collective decisions from the timing, touring, artist participation and information sharing. One of the hardest and most discussed decisions wound up being about which single to lead with. Impacting the darker “Neon Pill” first into the lighter “Rainbow” still rings true for me.

With Myles Smith’s “Stargazing” at No. 2, RCA has both of the top two slots on the chart, with two vastly different songs. What strategy goes into making that happen?

So wildly different — it’s such an exciting moment. Cage is an established band at the format, and it had been many years since new Cage music, so the table was set and the anticipation was high. Myles, on the other hand, was a virtual unknown to alternative radio. As a result, the set up was more “door to door” as we sought early champions. A handful of alternative major-market programmers led the way, early, on the backs of a huge streaming story and we were off to the races. We couldn’t have achieved this level of success on this campaign without the early belief from those first alternative stations. Those folks have all my gratitude.

The upper tier of the Alternative Airplay chart is full of artists who have had careers stretching back 10 years or more — Cage, White, The Offspring, Linkin Park, Green Day — but Myles is a much newer artist, with “Stargazing” being his first charting hit in the U.S. How hard is it to break a new artist on alternative radio these days?

As Public Enemy once said, harder than you think. Alternative radio has always played a wide variety of new musical styles, but ultimately, it’s their gold libraries that hold everything together. One can say many of the most successful new songs at alternative have “connective tissue” sonically to a station’s music library. With the nostalgic feels coming out of the pandemic, heritage artists releasing new music have been a hot ticket item for many programmers, making shots on new artists even tougher. That being said, there certainly have been some brand-new artists with terrific runs at alternative in the last year. Myles Smith has been a triple threat with “Stargazing”: a sonic fit, incredible streaming and early power-worthy research.

On the flip side, why is the format so friendly to artists with long careers, when so much of pop radio is driven by new hits and new artists?

How much time do you have? Alternative radio today has remained true to their explosive origins, continuing to support a larger library of songs and artists dating back to the format’s inception. As a result, these stations tend to have a slightly older audience than pop, along with fewer current tracks in rotation at a given time. As mentioned, the wave of historic artists releasing new music has created quite a dilemma. Given the limited space for current music, it would seem many programmers have opted to lean into the artists they know have worked in the past. The irony, of course, is that we have seen some of the biggest researching songs of the year come from either new or unexpected artists at this format, with Myles Smith being a prime example.

How has radio promotion evolved over the course of your career?

The information and technology we have now vs. 15 years ago is staggering and allows us to be more strategic than ever. The bones of this job are, however, still the same. I expect that to continue, as long as music programing at radio is still editorialized. I learned a long time ago that the one constant in this business is change. Having a crackerjack team here at RCA across all formats, including the promo leadership from Keith Rothschild and Sam Selolwane, allows us to face new challenges and adopt new strategies while remaining focused and unrelenting in the amplification of our artists across the radio platform.

Greatest Pop Stars of the 21st Century Podcast: Shakira (No. 17) & Jay-Z (No. 16)

On this week’s (Sept. 6) episode of the Greatest Pop Stars of the 21st Century podcast, we take a look at a pair of enduring all-time greats: the Queen of Latin Music Shakira and the rap GOAT Jay-Z.

First, host Andrew Unterberger is joined by Billboard Español‘s Isabela Raygoza and Sigal Ratner-Arias to trace Shakira’s journey from Colombian rockera to global pop star to elder stateswoman of Latin popular music. We cover what made her such a striking presence in early ’00s pop music, how she was able to meet American pop icons like Beyoncé and Rihanna on even footing in collaborations, and why you kinda have to throw the chart stats out the window when evaluating her overall legacy. Of course, we also discuss her most recent (and most triumphant) comeback, where she fought through personal tumult and emerged with a pair of 2020s smashes bigger than most hitmakers half her age could manage.

Then (at the 38:38 mark), Billboard Hip-Hop’s Angel Diaz and Michael Saponara stop by to quote scripture from the Book of J-Hova. We start with how Jay-Z was already well on his way to all-time great status by the turn of the millennium, but try to capture how his early-’00s run helped bring not just his own career but all of hip-hop to new heights within pop music and pop culture. Then, we discuss his retirement (and his first of many comebacks), his career-defining relationships with Beyoncé and Kanye West, and his sometimes divisive later work — before asking whether or not Jay might still have one more classic left in him.

Michael Jackson Estate Takes Legal Action Over Abuse Accuser’s Demands For $213M: Reports

Michael Jackson’s estate has filed a legal action against a man who it claims has threatened to resurface ugly abuse allegations ahead of the upcoming release of a biopic about the King of Pop, according to multiple media reports.

As detailed by both the Washington Informer and the Financial Times on Friday, Jackson’s estate has filed a private arbitration case against the unnamed accuser, claiming his alleged threats violate an earlier, never-before-reported settlement over the abuse accusations.

In the arbitration case, the estate reportedly alleges that the earlier settlement — struck in 2020 — saw the accuser paid $3.3 million in return for signing a non-disclosure agreement. But the estate reportedly claims he’s now threatening to breach the agreement if he’s not paid another $213 million.

Trending on Billboard

In an interview with the Informer, estate executor John Branca reportedly said: “The associate’s lawyer even said to us, ‘If you don’t meet our demands, we’re going to have to share these allegations with a wider group of people.’ It was a shakedown. Enough is enough.”

The name of Jackson’s accuser and the details of his supposed allegations were not disclosed in media reports. It’s unclear when the arbitration case was filed, or what exactly it alleges. The Jackson estate would not confirm the accuracy of the reports and declined to comment on the matter.

The article from the Financial Times reported that the Jackson estate had also referred the matter to the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Los Angeles. A spokesman for that office did not immediately return a request for comment from Billboard.

The threats to go public come as the Jackson estate prepares for the premiere of Michael, a movie about the singer’s life starring his nephew Jaafar Jackson in the titular role. The biopic, directed by Antoine Fuqua, is set for release in April 2025.

Jackson, who died suddenly in 2009, was never convicted or held legally liable on any accusation of child molestation, but is still dogged by such allegations. Two men, Wade Robson and James Safechuck, continue to claim Jackson sexually abused them as children, spending the last decade pursuing civil lawsuits. And their allegations were amplified in 2019 by HBO docuseries Leaving Neverland, which laid out their claims in disturbing detail.

The Jackson estate has always vehemently denied all such claims, pointing out that the singer was acquitted in a 2005 criminal trial and arguing that his accusers are simply seeking monetary gain from an artist who cannot defend himself because defamation law does not extend to dead individuals.

Shortly before Leaving Neverland aired, the estate sued HBO over the series, claiming that “Michael Jackson is innocent. Period.” The case claimed the network had breached a decades-old contract that it signed to air a Jackson concert back in 1992, which included a provision banning HBO from making “any disparaging remarks” about the singer.

That lawsuit was eventually sent to private arbitration in 2019, where it remains pending. The status of such arbitration cases, similar to the one reported on Friday, are intentionally kept more private than traditional litigation and are difficult to ascertain from public records.

Oprah Winfrey hosted a virtual rally for Kamala Harris, which was full of key moments and celebrity appearances.

On Thursday (September 19), Oprah Winfrey was the host of a virtual rally in support of Democratic presidential nominee Kamala Harris. The conversation was held in front of a live studio audience in Farmington Hills, Michigan, which is a northwestern suburb of the city of Detroit. After greeting Vice President Harris warmly, Winfrey asked her about President Joe Biden dropping out of the race and endorsing her. “I felt a sense of responsibility, to be honest with you, and with that comes a sense of purpose,” ” Harris responded. “There really is so much at stake.”

The event, dubbed “Unite For America”, brought together many of the groups who had previously held virtual calls for Harris in the past weeks since she entered the race including Win With Black Women, Win With Black Men,  Comics for Kamala, Cat Ladies for Kamala, and White Dudes for Harris.

Winfrey led a conversation where different topics were discussed, including gun safety and the Second Amendment. At one point, Harris shared that she did own a gun. “If somebody breaks in my house, they’re getting shot,” she remarked, prompting the crowd to laugh before adding, “I probably should not have said that. But my staff will deal with that later.”

That moment was one of several where Vice President Harris opened up and spoke at length about issues she is passionate about, including the effects of illegal immigration and reproductive rights for women. That discussion took on greater impact when the mother and sister of Amber Thurman spoke with Harris and Winfrey. Thurman died of sepsis after waiting 20 hours for treatment after taking an abortion pill, which has been tied to the state’s abortion ban. “It’s a healthcare crisis,” Harris said. “It’s a health care crisis that affects the patient and the profession.”

Celebrities were also on hand to lend their support to Harris, including Bryan Cranston, Chris Rock, Ben Stiller, Tracee Ellis Ross, Jennifer Lopez, and Meryl Streep. An estimated 300,000 tuned in to the live-streamed event, and Winfrey was adamant about her motivation behind hosting – imploring people to register and to vote. “We love having you here, but the rah-rah moment is going to end, and then we need to get to work,” she said to the crowd.

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez Takes Jab at Nicky Jam & Anuel AA During Congressional Hearing: Watch

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez dissed Nicky Jam and Anuel AA when the subject turned to Donald Trump at a recent congressional hearing.

While questioning Mark Krikorian, the executive director of the far-right Center for Immigration Studies, during an Oversight and Accountability Committee hearing Thursday (Sept. 19), the Bronx representative asked him whether he remembered the Donald Trump administration’s rumored desire to “sell” the island of Puerto Rico.

“I don’t even remember that one,” Krikorian replied, to which AOC countered, “I suppose that puts you and Nicky Jam and Anuel in the same boat.”

Nicky Jam was born and raised in Massachusetts, but has lived in Puerto Rico most of his life; Anuel is Puerto Rican. Billboard has reached out to reps for Ocasio-Cortez, Nicky Jam and Anuel AA for comment.

The hearing was dubbed “A Legacy of Incompetence: Consequences of the Biden-Harris Administration’s Policy Failures.” It came with 46 days left to go before the 2024 presidential election, in which both Latin music stars mentioned by AOC are championing Trump.

Anuel formally endorsed the Republican candidate at the former president’s rally in August, appearing on stage alongside fellow reggaetón star Justin Quiles. “The best president the world has seen, this country has ever seen, his name is President Trump,” the “China” musician said at the podium. “I personally spoke with him, he wants to help Puerto Rico grow and succeed as a country. He wants to keep helping Latinos in the U.S. Let’s keep doing things the right way and let’s make America great again.”

The following month, Jam appeared at Trump’s rally in Las Vegas, where the twice-impeached ex-POTUS mistakenly referred to the “X” singer as a “she.” “Do you know Nicky? She’s hot. Where’s Nicky?” Trump said while introducing the artist.

Despite the faux pas, Nicky Jam gave a passionate endorsement of the billionaire upon taking the microphone. “It’s an honor to meet you, Mr. President,” he told Trump. “We need you. We need you back, right? We need you to be the president.”

He and Anuel are two of several musicians who are backing Trump’s re-election bid this year, alongside Jason Aldean, Kid Rock, Kodak Black, Lil Pump, Sexyy Red and Billy Ray Cyrus. Democratic opponent Kamala Harris, however, also has a litany of A-list artists on her side, from Taylor Swift to Billie Eilish, Cardi B, Megan Thee Stallion, John Legend and more.

Watch AOC call out Nicky Jam and Anuel AA below.

aespa and Grimes Team-Up For Space-Age ‘Supernova’ Remix: Listen

K-pop girl group aespa blast off into space with a new Grimes-assisted remix of their hit single “Supernova.” The song from the four-woman group’s debut studio album, Armageddon – The 1st Album, gets an intergalactic brush-up as part of a six-track remix EP that dropped on Friday (Sept. 20), iScreaM Vol. 33 ” Supernova / Armageddon Remixes.

In an X post, Grimes explained why she stepped out of her typical lane for the project. “I normally don’t do remixes but I could not resist messing with this accapella even tho the original production on this song is undefeatable,” Grimes wrote. “I went back to cyber twee for this and even had @angelfir_e sit behind me and stop me every time I tried to overthink the production so… it’s very grimesy.”

She’s not kidding. While the original track from KARINA, GISELLE, WINTER AND NINGNING was a snappy, hyper dance pop banger, in Grimes’ hands it gets a firmware update with chilly, metallic beats, Grimes’ signature alien chirp sped-up vocals, celestial harmonies and new wave keyboards.

In addition, on Instagram Grimes said sorry/not sorry for changing the song’s alluring chorus and drilling down on a lyric she was entranced by. “I know I changed the hook but I was so shook by the lyric ‘bring no light of a dying star’ that was casually in there. Felt like it needed a moment,” she wrote. Grimes also posted a series of pics with the group in which she rocks a futuristic jumpsuit and sparkly red glasses. “rip the old grimes she wud have loved dis,” she wrote alongside the snaps.

In addition to the Grimes “Supernova” remix, the EP features three new remixes of the album’s title track — by Flava D, 2Spade and Mount XLR — as well as the original versions of the title track and “Supernova.” On X, Grimes revealed that she did her own “Armageddon” remix as well, noting, “idk if they want it but I could ask. I also have a second supernova remix that’s kinda good but my baby destroyed the computer it was on so it’s unmixable.”

iScreaM Vol. 33 is part of a four-year-old series from SM’s EDM label ScreaM Records featuring remixes of songs by SM artists that has perviously featured revamps of tracks from NCT 127, SHINee, Red Velvet, Taeyeon, Girls’ Generation and others. Armageddon – The 1st Album debuted at No. 2 on Billboard’s Top Album Sales chart in July, marking the quartet’s fifth project to debut in the top 10 on that tally.

Kamala Harris ‘Proud’ to Have Taylor Swift’s Support Despite Being ‘On Different Sides of the Super Bowl’

Taylor Swift is the celebrity endorsement of Kamala Harris‘ wildest dreams.

In a WIRED video posted 10 days after the pop star broke her silence on the 2024 presidential election, emphatically backing the Democratic politician’s campaign against Donald Trump, Harris reacted to Swift’s endorsement. “I am very proud to have the support of Taylor Swift,” she said in the autocomplete interview.

“She’s an incredible artist,” the VP continued. “I really respect the courage that she has had in her career to stand up for what she believes is right.”

There is, however, one cause on which Harris says she disagrees with the 14-time Grammy winner. “We were on different sides of the Super Bowl last year,” she said with a smile, referring to Swift’s support of boyfriend Travis Kelce’s team, the Kansas City Chiefs, who won against Harris’ home team, the San Francisco 49ers, in February. “But who’s mad at anyone for being loyal to their team?”

Swift is one of many musicians who has given Harris their seal of approval this election, with Ariana Grande, Billie Eilish, Cardi B, Megan Thee Stallion and more speaking out in support of the Democratic ticket over the past few months. The “Anti-Hero” singer’s endorsement, however, has objectively been the most talked about, with her Sept. 10 post calling the former prosecutor a “steady-handed, gifted leader” earning praise from Hillary Clinton, Stevie Nicks, George Clooney and more while sparking backlash from conservatives such as Trump’s running mate JD Vance, Megyn Kelly and Lil Pump.

Trump himself weighed in shortly after Swift said her piece, telling Fox & Friends that the singer would “probably pay a price for it in the marketplace.” Later, he posted on Truth Social, “I HATE TAYLOR SWIFT.”

Watch Harris react to Swift’s endorsement above.
