JoJo Siwa Isn’t Interested In Getting You to Like Her: ‘Any Attention Is Attention’

Yes, JoJo Siwa is aware that there are a lot of people making fun of her — and she’s fine with that.

In a new cover story for Ladygunn, Siwa spoke at length about her relationship with fame, revealing that as long as people are talking about her, she feels as though she’s done her job. “I’m an attention whore,” she said. “My favorite thing to do on this earth is to entertain and to make people smile and laugh, whether or not they are laughing with me or laughing at me. Obviously, no one likes being hated, but I enjoy being entertaining, and that is how people are entertained.”

Expanding on her point, Siwa added that she felt “any attention is attention,” and shared an anecdote about correcting her management team on their stated goals for her career. “I just signed with new management, and they’re great, amazing people,” she said. “They were like, ‘All right, we got to get people to rally around you and really start to like you.’ And I was like, ‘Oh no, that’s not the point.’”

The “Guilty Pleasure” singer said that her relationship with attention came in part from her admiration of YouTubers Jake and Logan Paul. “I pulled so much of my social media marketing and inspiration from them back in the day,” she said. “Their views, their numbers, their marketing — they were geniuses. They still are geniuses … all I wanted to do was be them. And so I figured, ‘How can I do that but in my world?’”

Trending on Billboard

Siwa managed to keep fans’ attention with her cover shot for the magazine, in which she wore a bedazzled corset in the shape of a man’s torso along with a rhinestoned codpiece. Rising hip-hop star GloRilla even shared her thoughts on the photo, simply writing on X, “Ok moose knuckle.”

The story comes after a year of headline-making antics for Siwa. Upon the release of her “bad girl” single “Karma” back in April, fans were shocked by the performer’s Kiss-inspired music video look, as well as her jerking dance moves. When she told Billboard in a video interview that she wanted to create a new genre called “gay pop,” she was roundly criticized by fellow queer artists and critics alike.

But, as Siwa sees it, her plan worked. “Karma is still an earworm. It’s crazy that it still has some relevance five months later,” she said in her interview. “And that’s the whole point.”

Gavel and scales of justice on the table

Freddie Lee Trone, the California man at the center of the plot to rob and murder PnB Rock, will see prison time for his actions after being convicted earlier. Freddie Lee Trone will serve 31 years behind bars after his sentence was heard on Monday (September 23).

Local outlet KTLA reports that Freddie Lee Trone, 42, who was iniitally convicted of the murder of PnB Rock in 2022, was found guilty on all charges in August. The fatal incident took place on September 12, 2022, at a Roscoe’s Chicken and Waffles location in the South Los Angeles region. Trone also faced charges of felony murder, robbery, and conspiracy.

One of Trone’s co-defendants, Tremont Jones, was found guilty of robbery and conspiracy. Jones was sentenced to 12 years in prison.

Trone ordered his then-teenage son to rob and kill PnB Rock, who was dining in the establishment with his romantic partner at the time. According to prosecutors, Trone was the mastermind of the crime and served as his son’s getaway driver in the crime.

The son of Freddie Lee Trone is charged with first-degree murder and his case will be heard in juvenile court.

Another co-defendant, Shauntrel Trone, pleaded no contest to an accessory after the fact charge earlier this summer. She will face sentencing in January 2025.

Gregg Nadel Joins Cris Lacy as Co-Chair and Co-President of Warner Music Nashville

Warner Music Group mainstay Gregg Nadel has been appointed co-chair and co-president of Warner Music Nashville and will work alongside Cris Lacy, who’s been co-head of WMN for the past two years. Nadel succeeds Ben Kline, who is stepping down following a decade with the company.

The changes follow the recent move to bring Warner Music Nashville under the Warner Records umbrella.

Based in Nashville, Nadel and Lacy will report to Warner Records CEO & co-chairman Aaron Bay-Schuck and COO & co-chairman Tom Corson, who report direct to WMG CEO Robert Kyncl, effective Oct. 1. Lacy, Nadel, and their team will continue to work with Nashville artists co-signed with Atlantic Music Group.

Trending on Billboard

Over the course of nearly three decades, Nadel, who most recently served as president of Elektra Entertainment, has signed and/or championed artists including Zac Brown Band, Brandi Carlile, The Highwomen, Sturgill Simpson, Bailey Zimmerman and Brittney Spencer, as well as many other artists across multiple genres.

Prior to being named president of Elektra Entertainment in 2017, Nadel served as general manager of Elektra Records and before that was senior vp of A&R and marketing for Atlantic Records. A 27-year veteran of WMG, Nadel joined Atlantic directly out of college in 1997. He has led campaigns for global artists such as Ed Sheeran, who he’s worked with since the early days of Sheeran’s career. Nadel has been named to Billboard’s Power 100 list multiple times, and, this year, was honored as a Country Power Player.

Bay-Schuck and Corson said in a statement, “Gregg grew up at WMG, and over the past three decades, he’s brought his impeccable taste, wisdom, and guidance to an exceptional array of original, powerful voices. He’s an ambidextrous A&R and marketing expert with a global perspective, which will be a tremendous asset at a time when Nashville artists are crossing boundaries and reaching the world stage like never before. Like Gregg, Cris has expanded from her roots as an A&R force into a true multi-dimensional leader, and together, they’ll be a phenomenal team to take Warner Music Nashville into a dynamic future.”

Bay-Schuck and Corson added, “We’d also like to extend our heartfelt gratitude to Ben Kline. Over his past decade with WMN, his tireless passion for the label’s artists and team has set the company up for continued, expanding success. He leaves with our deepest admiration and best wishes for his next chapter.”

Nadel said, “I’ve had the honor of working with incredibly talented artists across many sounds and styles, and through it all, I’ve always felt a deep connection to the heartfelt music that comes from Nashville’s rich creative culture. I’m excited to be diving deeper into this brilliant community of musicians and storytellers, and I’m especially excited about working alongside Cris Lacy and the entire team. Thank you to Tom and Aaron for this incredible opportunity.”

Lacy noted, “Thanks to WMG’s cross-label and cross-genre philosophy, Gregg and I have been collaborating within the company for over a decade. We’re both rooted in a deep love of the music that comes into and out of Nashville. Gregg brings a unique, wide-ranging perspective to what will be a fantastic partnership. He has long invested in the culture and the community of this town, and together, we are fiercely committed to amplifying what makes its music so special. My heartfelt thanks and admiration go out to Ben. It’s been a great ride, and his expertise, leadership, and friendship have made it all the more gratifying. I wish him the very best in all things to come.”

Kline said, “Together, we’ve grown Warner Music Nashville to new heights and played vital roles in the development of so many artists. Thanks to WMG leadership for all of the opportunities, faith, and guidance along the way. And thank you to Cris Lacy for her never-wavering support for the artists and their musical visions. I’m excited for the next adventure.”

Lin-Manuel Miranda Talks New ‘The Warriors’ Concept Album with Lauryn Hill

The cult classic film The Warriors is getting a new interpretation from Lin-Manuel Miranda, featuring Lauryn Hill among others.

For many, The Warriors is a beloved film from the late 1970s that has been celebrated since its release. A new album reimagining the original story from award-winning playwrights Lin-Manuel Miranda and Elsa Davis is set to be released on October 18, and it features Grammy Award-winner Lauryn Hill playing the role of Cyrus, and the titular street gang from Coney Island played by notable actresses Kenita Miller, Sasha Hutchings, Phillipa Soo, Aneesa Folds, Amber Gray, Gizel Jiménez, Jasmine Cephas Jones and Julia Harriman.

Lauryn Hill’s addition to the album already rounds out the highly-impressive cast on the project. “We just had to have her, you know what I mean? There was no plan B, whatsoever,” Davis said of reaching out to the singer. The album also features Nas (who’s an executive producer), Ghostface and The RZA, Busta Rhymes, Cam’ron, Chris Rivers, and reggae artist Shenseea, along with actors Colman Domingo and Billy Porter. Original cast members James Remar and David Patrick Kelly also appear on the project. “Eisa and I crafted our letter with care and just stayed in touch with her manager over the course of the year, never having a plan B, texting back and forth until one day we had a Dropbox file with all of these harmonies,” Miranda said.

For the Hamilton actor and producer and Davis, an Obie Award winner her performance in Passing Strange, the Warriors being portrayed by all women isn’t just a mere gender-swap. It’s a choice inspired by the online vitriol that the two observed in Gamergate and tying it to the moment Cyrus is killed by Luther and his gang. “I made that connection and then thought, “Well if the Warriors are women, how does that change the narrative?” At every point, it complicates it in a really compelling way,” Miranda explained. “I think that it’s just so crucial to think about this — it’s a group of women that no one believes. Everyone is accusing you falsely, as Lin is saying, and what is it that you do? What is it that you try?” Davis stated.

The two did say there are no plans to turn this version into a feature film. The Warriors concept album is out October 18.

Massive Attack Announce New Series of Climate Action Gigs in Liverpool

In August, Massive Attack played a pioneering show in Bristol, England as part of their Act 1.5 programme. Held at Clifton Park in their home city, the show introduced an array of measures designed to reduce the environmental impact of live concerts, including encouraging the use of public transport, ring-fencing tickets for local residents and powering the show and festival site on 100% renewable energy and battery power.

Following today’s announcement that Liverpool had been named the first Accelerator City by the UN’s Entertainment and Culture for Climate Action (ECCA) programme, Massive Attack have announced a series of gigs to be held in Liverpool this November.

Across three nights, IDLES (Nov 28) Massive Attack (Nov 29) and Nile Rodgers & Chic (Nov 30) will perform at the M&S Bank Arena on Liverpool’s dockside area with a similar green ethos. The band say the shows “will test, operate & adapt a range of measures to dramatically reduce the level of carbon emissions & air pollution that would usually be produced at an event of this scale.”

Trending on Billboard

Some of the measures include an earlier show time finish to accommodate the use of public transport back home, a meat-free arena and a “plug & play” technical set-up for the performers. The show will also be powered by 100% renewable energy.

A localised pre-sale for fans in the Liverpool area will begin at 12pm tomorrow (Sep 24) to encourage local attendees, with a general sale held on Friday (Sep 27). Find out more about tickets here.

Massive Attack’s Robert Del Naja – also known as 3D – said in a statement: “Our recent Bristol show demonstrated beyond question that major live music events can be Paris 1.5 compatible, and that audiences will embrace change enthusiastically. The vast scope of work in Liverpool and UN recognition means we can now concentrate more dynamic pilots and experiments to rapidly phase out fossil fuels. This idea and this insistence are not going back in any box.

“We’re delighted to see artists like Coldplay testing elements like localised ticket pre-sales as recommended in the Tyndall Centre Paris 1.5 decarbonisation road map and encourage other artists to do so freely. The talking stage is over, it’s time to act.”

Earlier this month, Coldplay announced a run of shows in the U.K. for August 2025 that will be powered by solar, wind and kinetic energy, and also include a 10% donation to the Music Venues Trust to help support grassroots music scenes.

Act 1.5 Presents shows:

November 28 – Idles, M&S Bank Arena, Liverpool
November 28 – Massive Attack, M&S Bank Arena, Liverpool
November 30 – Nile Rodgers & Chic, M&S Bank Arena, Liverpool

T.I. And Tiny Win $71M Jury Verdict Against Toymaker In Lawsuit Over OMG Girlz

T.I. and his wife Tameka “Tiny” Harris won a stunning $71 million jury verdict Monday in their lawsuit claiming that toymaker MGA stole the design of a line of “O.M.G.” toy dolls from their real-life teen pop group OMG Girlz.

As first reported by Law360, jurors awarded the couple and their companies the huge award after finding that MGA’s dolls infringed both the trade dress and the likeness rights of the OMG Girlz — a defunct musical trio created by Tiny and featuring her daughter Zonnique “Star” Pullins.

Following a three-week trial and a day of deliberations, the jurors awarded the rapper and his wife $17.9 million in actual damages and another $53.6 million in punitive damages. Neither side immediately returned requests for comment.

Trending on Billboard

The legal battle began in 2021, with T.I. (real name Clifford Harris) and Tiny claiming that MGA had committed both “cultural appropriation and outright theft of the intellectual property” by stealing the look of a group of “young multicultural women.”

Their complaint against MGA included side-by-side images, aiming to show how each OMG doll was directly based on a particular member of the OMG Girlz – Pullins, Bahja “Beauty” Rodriguez, and Breaunna “Babydoll” Womack.

MGA maintained that it had done nothing wrong — that the dolls were more often branded as L.O.L. Surprise! O.M.G., and that consumers would not confuse the toys for the “short-lived” band.

Over three years of litigation, the case already went to trial twice. The first trial, in January 2023, ended in a mistrial after jurors heard inadmissible testimony featuring accusations of racism against MGA. The second trial then ended in a verdict for MGA, with jurors clearing the company of wrongdoing. But that verdict was later overturned on appeal, setting the stage for yet another trial.

On the third try, the outcome swung in favor of T.I. and Tiny. In a livestream on Instagram following the verdict, she said it had been “a hell of a fight” but that “we couldn’t be more happy.”

“We wanted to thank the jurors for just seeing us through this, and just believing in what we said,” she said in the video. “They heard our story and they knew we wasn’t lying. It’s amazing.”

MGA can still appeal the verdict and the damages award, first by asking the judge to set them aside and then by taking the case to a federal appeals court.
