Why Kelly Clarkson Covered ‘My Heart Will Go On’ Even Though ‘There’s Some Songs You Don’t Want to Go Near as a Vocalist’

Kelly Clarkson may be in league of her own as a vocalist, but even she’s nervous to follow in Céline Dion‘s footsteps.

On Friday’s The Kelly Clarkson Show, the pop star-turned-host tackled one of the biggest hits of the 1990s as her Kellyoke cover: Dion’s “My Heart Will Go On,” the theme song from 1997’s blockbuster Titanic movie. Dion’s original spent two weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1998, and Clarkson admirably channeled the Canadian superstar singer with her understated intro leading into a bombastic finale — key change and all.

Clarkson wore a magenta turtleneck pant suit for the performance and made a subtle Titanic nod with her jewelry: Her sapphire-blue ring — which could be seen on her hand clutching the microphone — recalled the Heart of the Ocean diamond necklace that plays a central role in the movie.

After the performance, Clarkson gushed to the audience about Dion. “She really is just an incredible talent. Her stunning performance at the Olympics was one of the highlights for me this summer, it was so good.”

Trending on Billboard

She also explained her reason for tackling a seemingly untouchable song. “Usually I would never cover that song because there’s some songs you don’t want to go near as a vocalist,” Clarkson said. “But there’s a reason why I did that today.” The reason: Her guest on Friday’s episode was Titanic star Kate Winslet.

Below, watch Clarkson’s “My Heart Will Go On” Kellyoke cover, as well as her interview with Winslet.

The Kid LAROI Says He’s Most Excited to See Girlfriend Tate McRae at Jingle Ball: ‘Maybe I’m Biased’

‘Tis the season for the iHeartRadio Jingle Ball tour!

The  iHeartRadio Jingle Ball Lineup Announcement Party took place on Friday (Sept. 27) with The Kid LAROI and Dasha helping announce the official lineup for iHeartRadio 102.7 KIIS FM’s Jingle Ball in Los Angeles presented by Capital One. The duo performed at the celebration, as radio personality JoJo Wright listed off this year’s Jingle Ball LA stars.

The Los Angeles event, which will take place on Dec. 6 at the Intuit Dome, will include performances by SZA, Tate McRae, Meghan Trainor, Kane Brown, Benson Boone, Madison Beer, Shaboozey, T-Pain, Paris Hilton and NCT Dream.

The Kid LAROI, of course, is excited to see his girlfriend McRae take the stage at the big event. “Maybe I’m biased,” he admits. “It feels wrong to say I’m most excited for anyone else!”

LAROI himself is also returning to the Jingle Ball tour for the third time, taking the stage in New York City, Boston, Washington, D.C. and Miami. “Good music always wins,” he says of this year’s variety of genres. “I’m a huge fan of everyone on the lineup.”

Trending on Billboard

Dasha agrees, and is personally very excited for country’s representation on this year’s lineup. “Finally!” jokes the rising country star, who will be taking the stage at the shows in Philadelphia, Dallas and Washington, D.C. “I feel like for a while people have viewed country music in a box, that it’s for bros in the South and that’s kind of it. There are a lot of up-and-coming artists have changed that narrative with songs that have traveled across the world and new perspectives and new stories. It’s relatable to different types of people now. With the power of social media and new artists, people are finally like, ‘Oh, s—, I’ve been missing out on this.”

She also really wants to get up close and personal with the fans during her performance. “I usually hop into the crowd during ‘Austin,’ so hopefully they let me,” she says. “A girl like me likes to get in the crowd.”

In addition to LA, the Jingle Ball tour will hit Dallas, Chicago, Detroit, New York City, Boston, Philadelphia, Washington, D.C., Atlanta and Miami. See the full lineup list here. For those who can’t see the fun in person, the iHeartRadio Jingle Ball Tour stops will be part of an exclusive network special on ABC, airing December 18, and available for streaming the next day on Hulu.

“The annual iHeartRadio Jingle Ball Tour has become the biggest holiday music event of the year featuring the hottest artists of the year playing their songs that went No. 1,” said John Sykes, president of entertainment enterprises for iHeartMedia and Tom Poleman, chief programming officer for iHeartMedia, said in a press statement. “We are thrilled to be back again with ABC to bring this year’s lineup to millions more fans across the country.”

The iHeartRadio Jingle Ball Capital One Cardholder Pre-Sale begins Tuesday, Oct. 1, at 10 a.m. local time and runs through Thursday, Oct. 3, at 10 a.m. local time, or while pre-sale supplies last. Pre-sale information and tickets will be available at iHeartRadio.com/CapitalOne. All other tickets go on sale to the general public on Friday, Oct. 4, at noon local time and will be available at iHeartRadio.com/JingleBall.

Cam’ron Reveals He Turned Down Key to the City From NYC Mayor Eric Adams

Cam’ron made a big revelation on his and Mase‘s show It Is What It Is earlier Friday (Sept. 27). While greeting each other to start their latest episode, Cam asked Mase if he heard about the indictment of New York City Mayor Eric Adams before casually dropping some interesting news.

“You know what’s crazy? This is word to everything I love,” Cam’ron prefaced. “Last month, they called me to see if I wanted the key to the city. I said, ‘I don’t want to be involved with nothin’.’ They offered me that sh–. They said, ‘Cam, you want the key?’ I said, ‘That ain’t really up my alley right now, I’m cool with the key to New York City, man.’” He added: “Yo, word to blood. That’s word to everything I love. ‘Yo, Cam, you interested in the key to the city?’ What does that get you, though?”

Trending on Billboard

Mase then asked if it was Mayor Adams who called and asked specifically, with Cam clarifying that it was actually the mayor’s office that hit him up. Cam again asked, “What does that get you?” before alluding to the time Diddy received a key to NYC from the mayor (which he eventually was asked to return), telling Mase, “I don’t want nothing to do with keys to the city or the n—as givin’ them out, the n—as who had previously had them. I don’t got nothing to do with the key to the city. I don’t got nothing to do with that,” Cam laughed. “I actually got to go to New York this weekend for about 20 minutes.”

Mayor Adams recently hired defense attorney to the stars Alex Spiro to help him fight five federal charges that he’s been charged with.

Tencent Music, Cloud Music Lead Music Stocks to New Record High

Two Chinese music streaming companies, Cloud Music and Tencent Music Entertainment, led all music stocks in a second consecutive record-setting week.

Cloud Music surged 31.5% to 121.50 HKD ($15.63) and Tencent Music Entertainment jumped 24.6% to $12.27, benefitted from a surge in Chinese stocks this week. Cloud Music set a new 52-week high of 123.40 HKD ($15.88) on Friday and brought its year-to-date gain to 35.4%. Before the current upswing, Tencent Music had lost more than half its value since hitting its 52-week high of $15.77 on May 16. Now, Tencent Music’s year-to-date gain stands at 36.2%.

Chinese stocks had their best week since 2008 as investors reacted to the country’s stimulus plan announced Tuesday. Among the components of the plan is a provision to allow banks to lend to companies to repurchase their shares and allowing major shareholders to buy larger stakes in companies. As a result, the Shanghai Composite Index, which measures all stocks traded on the Shanghai exchange, shot up 12.8% this week.

Trending on Billboard

Led by China’s two largest music streaming companies, the Billboard Global Music Index, a float-adjusted index of 20 music business stocks, rose 4.4% to a record 1,956.63 in the week ended Sept. 27. The BGMI has gained 12.2% in the last three weeks and reached a new record high for the second consecutive week. The index had 14 stocks in positive territory and just six of the 20 stocks in the red.

Music stocks easily outperformed most major indexes. In the United States, the Nasdaq composite gained 1.0% to 18,119.59 and the S&P 500 rose 0.6% to 5,738.17. In the United Kingdom, the FTSE 100 was up 1.1% to 8,320.76. South Korea’s KOSPI composite index rose 2.2% to 2,649.78.

K-pop stocks also had an outstanding week. The four leading South Korean music companies, which have all shed significant value in 2024, posted an average gain of 14.4%. YG Entertainment rose 18.3%, SM Entertainment jumped 16.9%, JYP Entertainment improved 14.2% and HYBE climbed 8.1%.

Spotify, the BMGI’s most valuable component, rose 1.1% to $369.13. During the week, Spotify shares rose as high as $389.96—a new all-time high—but fell $20 by the end of Friday. Universal Music Group, the BGMI’s second-most valuable component, gained 4.9% to 23.86 euros ($26.66). On Friday, Kepler Cheuvreux upgraded UMG to “hold” from “reduce” and lowered its price target to 23.50 euros ($26.25) from 27.00 euros ($30.16).

SiriusXM was one of the week’s few losers, dropping 2.2% to $24.39. Morgan Stanley on Tuesday told investors that SiriusXM faces the risk of “further multiple compression” due to a limited outlook for subscriber and revenue growth. In other words, if SiriusXM was valued at, say, 15 times earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization (EBITDA), its growth prospects might merit a lower multiple.

Music streaming company LiveOne had the week’s biggest decline of 23.2%. Radio broadcaster Cumulus Media fell 8.6% and French music streamer Deezer dropped 8.0%.

Otis Redding to Receive Posthumous Star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame

Otis Redding is about to get a little “Respect” – to borrow the title of one of his most famous compositions – from the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

The late soul music legend will be honored posthumously with a star on Friday, Oct. 4, at 11:30 a.m. PT at 6150 Hollywood Blvd. Redding’s star is in the category of live theatre/live performance.

Five-time Grammy-winning producer (and previous Walk of Fame honoree) Jimmy Jam will emcee the star ceremony. Killer Mike, who won three Grammys in the rap field in February, will speak. Accepting the award will be the singer’s daughter, Karla Redding-Andrews.

“The Hollywood Chamber of Commerce is honored to dedicate a star to the legendary Otis Redding, whose music continues to inspire generations,” Ana Martinez, producer of the Walk of Fame ceremonies, said in a statement.

Trending on Billboard

Redding has long been regarded as one of the greatest soul singers in popular music history. He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1989, the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 1994 and received a lifetime achievement award from the Recording Academy in 1999. Three of his recordings are in the Grammy Hall of Fame – his 1965 hit “I’ve Been Loving You Too Long (to Stop Now),” his 1967 reinvention of the 1933 pop standard “Try a Little Tenderness” and his deeply moving 1968 classic “(Sittin’ on) the Dock of the Bay.” Aretha Franklin’s classic 1967 version of “Respect,” which Redding wrote and had the initial hit with in 1965, is also in the Grammy Hall.

Redding had a volley of hits between 1964 and 1967. He even played at the Monterey International Pop Festival in June 1967. But less than six months later, on Dec. 10, 1967, he died in a plane crash in Madison, Wisc. en route to a concert. He was just 26.

The first sign that his music would live on came when “(Sittin’ on) the Dock of the Bay” shot to No. 1 in early 1968 on both the Billboard Hot 100 and Top Selling R&B Singles (as the chart was then called). Redding also had a pair of top 10 albums on the Billboard 200 in the spring of 1968 – History of Otis Redding and The Dock of the Bay. In early 1969, “Dock of the Bay” won two Grammys – best rhythm & blues song and best rhythm & blues vocal performance, male.

Redding’s influence continues through the work of the Otis Redding Foundation, ran by his widow Zelma and daughter Karla Redding-Andrews, which seeks to preserve his legacy through empowering music education for all youth.

The star ceremony will be streamed live at WalkOfFame.com.
