Lil Durk Ordered Quando Rondo’s Murder, Feds Say — and Was Planning to Flee Country When Arrested

Lil Durk ordered his OTF associates to murder rapper Quando Rondo in a failed 2022 shooting, according to criminal charges unsealed by federal prosecutors on Friday (Oct. 25) — and he was allegedly planning to take a private jet to Italy when he was arrested.

The Chicago rapper (real name Durk Devontay Banks) was arrested Thursday evening on a charge of conspiracy to commit murder-for-hire, hours after several of his Only the Family associates were indicted on similar charges over their alleged involvement in the attempted killing of Rondo (Tyquian Bowman).

In a new complaint unsealed on Friday, prosecutors laid out their case against Durk (referred to as BANKS in the complaint) — accusing OTF of being not just a rap collective, but also a “hybrid organization” that also functions as a criminal gang that has carried out violent acts “at the direction of BANKS.”

Prosecutors say one of those acts was the 2022 attempted killing of Rondo, allegedly carried out in retaliation for the 2020 killing of rapper King Von (Dayvon Bennett), a close friend of Durk’s.

“BANKS put a monetary bounty out for an individual with whom BANKS was feuding named T.B.,” referring to Rondo by his initials. “BANKS ordered T.B.’s murder and that the hitmen used BANKS and OTF-related finances to carry out the murder.”

An attorney for Lil Durk did not immediately return a request for comment on Friday.

The charges came a day after Los Angeles federal prosecutors unsealed murder-for-hire and murder-for-hire conspiracy charges against several alleged OTF members — Kavon London Grant, Deandre Dontrell Wilson and Asa Houston – as well as two other alleged Chicago gang members named Keith Jones and David Brian Lindsey.

In both the new charges and the earlier indictment, prosecutors claim that the five men were behind the 2022 shooting. But in the new filings, they directly allege that Durk ordered the killing, saying it was retaliation for a 2020 Atlanta shooting in which a Rondo associate allegedly shot and killed Von.

“At the time of the murder, T.B. had a public feud with BANKS,” prosecutors write. “The feud stemmed from a Nov. 6, 2020, murder, where an associate of T.B. shot and killed an OTF rapper named Dayvon Bennett aka ‘King Von.’ Bennett was a member of OTF and BANKS’ close friend.”

The new filings also claim that Durk was planning to flee the country when he was arrested.

Prosecutors say that following the OTF arrests, they received notification that Durk had booked commercial flights to both Dubai, United Arab Emirates, and to Switzerland — flights that he never boarded. The FBI then allegedly learned that he had booked passage on a private jet to Italy, and Durk was arrested when he neared the departing airport for that flight.

King Von, a rising rapper in Chicago’s drill scene and a childhood friend of Durk, was shot and killed outside an Atlanta nightclub on Nov. 6, 2020, after an argument between two groups turned into a fight in the parking lot. A 22-year-old man named Timothy Leeks, reportedly an associate of Rondo, was arrested days later, but the case was eventually dropped.

Two years later, on Aug. 19, 2022, Rondo and associate Lul Pab (Saviay’a Robinson) were ambushed by gunmen while sitting in their car at a Los Angeles gas station. Rondo emerged unscathed, but Robinson later died at the hospital.

According to Thursday’s indictment, that killing was allegedly carried out by OTF members Grant, Wilson and Houston, as well as by Jones and Lindsey, who prosecutors say were “members of other gangs in Chicago.” They allege the group “used two vehicles to track, stalk and attempt to kill T.B. by gunfire — including with a fully automatic firearm — resulting in the death of S.R.”

In Friday’s complaint, prosecutors say the group carried out the attack on orders from Durk in retaliation for the earlier King Von slaying. They cite a text allegedly sent by Durk to another co-conspirator: “Don’t book no flights under no names involved wit me.”

According to prosecutors, the group used “a credit card associated with OTF” to buy plane tickets to fly to Los Angeles and rent a hotel room. Using two cars, including one with fake license plates, the group then tracked Rondo’s SUV through the city until they reached the gas station.

“Jones and Lindsey, and Co-Conspirator 2 used the firearms procured by defendant Grant — including the fully automatic firearm — to shoot at T.B.’s car, striking and killing S.R., who was standing next to T.B.’s car while T.B. was inside,” prosecutors write.

After fleeing the scene, prosecutors say the group later reconvened at a restaurant, where they hashed out payments for the crime. Later in the day, they allegedly used the same OTF-linked credit card to purchase plane tickets and fly back to Chicago.

How Have the Diddy Allegations Affected His Streaming Numbers & Radio Play?

The old saying that any publicity is good publicity isn’t always true in the music business. And this year, Sean “Diddy” Combs is proving that listeners and corporations alike have limits.

Near the end of 2023, Combs was enjoying the momentum of the September release of The Love Album: Off the Grid, which spent seven weeks on the Billboard 200 albums chart and peaked at No. 19 on the Sept. 30 chart week. Meanwhile, album single “Another One of Me” by Diddy, French Montana & The Weeknd featuring 21 Savage peaked at No. 87 on the Billboard Hot 100.

However, those numbers would start dropping quickly. In November, the Bad Boy Records founder was the subject of three separate lawsuits by an ex-girlfriend, Cassie, and two other people with various allegations of sexual and physical assault. While his weekly streams and radio plays — composed of various solo recordings under names including Diddy, Puff Daddy and P. Diddy — could be expected to experience some decay as the weeks passed after the album’s launch, the controversies arguably accelerated Combs’ downturn with listeners.

Trending on Billboard

When Combs stepped down as chairman of digital media company Revolt a week later, his streams fell 22%, while his radio spins fell 36%. Two weeks after that — when brands severed ties with Combs’ e-commerce company, Empower Global, and Hulu scrapped plans for a reality show involving Combs — his radio plays fell another 55%.

That’s not to say that being in the news always hurts an artist’s streaming numbers. After Combs was arrested on Sept. 16 after being indicted for allegedly running a federal sex trafficking and racketeering conspiracy, U.S. on-demand streams of Combs’ music jumped 37% in the week ended Oct. 3. That Combs’ music benefitted from negative publicity isn’t a surprise — heavy media coverage, whether due to a death or a high-profile lawsuit, tends to influence what listeners seek out on streaming platforms. But the post-arrest bump was short-lived. Three weeks after Combs entered the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn, his streaming numbers had fallen to pre-indictment levels.

Diddy

Diddy

Billboard

Radio is a different story. While many listeners continued to stream Combs’ music, radio programmers, who risk losing advertisers by playing controversial artists, quickly abandoned Combs. In the first quarter of 2023, well before any public signs of impropriety, Combs’ music was getting played on U.S. radio anywhere from 800 to 1,000 times per week. But the March 25 FBI raids on Combs’ homes in Los Angeles and Miami coincided with a 27% drop in weekly radio spins. By the time a video of Combs assaulting Cassie in the hallway of a hotel surfaced at CNN in May, weekly spins of Combs’ songs were down to 352 — 94% below where they were when Cassie filed her lawsuit seven months earlier. By June, his weekly radio plays had dropped below 200.

Radio’s interest in Combs’ music reached a nadir soon after. The week after his arrest on Sept. 16, Combs’ weekly radio spins were down 25%, and radio programmers have largely refrained from playing his music ever since.

Combs’ experience at the hands of music streamers and radio stations echoes that of R&B singer R. Kelly a few years earlier. Long hounded by allegations of sexual abuse, Kelly managed to avoid accountability until the Washington Post ran a story titled “Star Treatment” that detailed how the music industry overlooked his deeds. In the wake of the article, Spotify and other streaming platforms decided in May 2018 to deemphasize Kelly’s tracks in algorithms and editorial playlists, and his average weekly U.S. on-demand streams dropped 10%. Radio programmers had an even bigger impact: Kelly’s weekly U.S. radio plays dropped 29% following the article’s publication.

Kelly’s arrest in February 2019 didn’t lead to an immediate drop in his streaming numbers; throughout 2019, his weekly on-demand streams consistently hovered around 15 million to 16 million. But radio programmers began abandoning him; by the time Kelly was arrested and charged by the state of Illinois in February, his weekly radio plays had already bottomed out at just over 100, down from about 2,000 a year earlier.

Over the next few years, streams of such songs as “I Believe I Can Fly” and “Ignition” would gradually and consistently decline. In 2020, Kelly’s tracks were doing roughly 9 million to 10 million streams per week. The next year, weekly streams fell to roughly 8 million, then 7 million.

Following a guilty verdict in September 2021, Kelly was given a 30-year prison sentence in June 2022. Like with Combs’ September 2024 arrest, media coverage of his sentence resulted in a small, single-digit gain in weekly streams, but the numbers showed a clear damage to his reputation. A week after the verdict, Kelly’s U.S. on-demand streams stood at 8.8 million per week — down 40% since the Washington Post article ran in 2018.

R. Kelly’s music seems to have reached a plateau, however, and interest in his catalog on streaming platforms has remained steady since his sentencing. Over two years later, Kelly’s weekly on-demand streams remain unchanged at roughly 9 million per week, though radio remains disinterested in playing his songs. This suggests that Diddy’s music could perform better online than at radio as his saga plays out.

Doja Cat Teases a New Album With Just One Word

Doja Cat is teasing her next era. With as much as a one word tweet, the superstar artist got her fans riled up on Thursday night (Oct. 24).

“Album,” she succinctly wrote without any context to X. She didn’t provide any follow-up so plenty of ecstatic fans flooded her replies with hopes and suggestions for Doja regarding the supposed album.

“WE NEED ARIANA GRANDE ON IT,” one person wrote. Another hopeful fan of King Vamp responded: “PLAYBOI CARTI BETTER BE ON IT.”

The viral tweet boasts over 100,000 likes as Doja appears to be in album mode. She has remained low on the music side in recent months following the arrival of her Scarlet 2 CLAUDE deluxe edition in May.

Doja Cat’s last album Scarlet followed 2021’s hit-spawning Planet Her. The project was released in September 2023 and reached No. 4 on the Billboard 200 and hit No. 2 on the Top Rap Albums chart.

Trending on Billboard

Scarlet is a very, to put it simply, quite an angry project,” she told Jack Harlow in September. “I think the point of that album was to showcase anger and how it processes through my mind, but also it’s about coming to your own defense and love. It’s sort of my ‘Why I oughta!’ moment of squaring up with everyone and defending myself, telling myself that I’m here for me, and not just for everybody else’s enjoyment.”

Perhaps Doja could link up with LISA. The BLACKPINK star recently opened up about her hopes to team up with the “Paint the Town Red” rapper for her next duet.

“But for now that I can think of, Doja Cat. I love her,” Lisa said of the list of other musicians she’d like to join forces with. “Doja Cat, for sure, is my next goal.”

Doja has still been busy on the performance side. Last month, The Grammy-winning artist headlined New York City’s Global Citizen Festival where she implored fans to use their voice and speak out against injustices around the world.

“Right now, millions of men, women and children in Gaza, Ukraine, Sudan, the Congo and all across the world, are suffering. In times like this, it is important to remember that we have the power to bring change, love light and hope to those who need it most,” she told the crowd.

And beyond that, amid another absolutely bananas busy week for dance music releases, these are the best new tracks of the week.

Disclosure, “Arachnids”

Almost five months after releasing the bright (and viral) singalong “She’s Gone, Dance On,” the Lawrence brother follow-up with another single that sounds absolutely nothing like that other one. Out on Warehouse Project Records, “Arachnids” is one for the afterhours, with crisp, syncopated percussion creating a foundation for waves of synth and a warm, inventive breakdown composed primarily of duduk.

Guy Lawrence writes that making the track “felt like an ever evolving, creative puzzle of sound design and groove exploration,” adding that “the project came together over many months of tweaking and adjusting. For me, this is kind of like a diary entry of where my production and mixing skills are currently at in 2024.” He continues by acknowledging that the song is “not gonna be one you can sing along to this time I’m afraid” — although it’s highly likely Disclosure fans will find other head-bobbing ways to enjoy this one. — KATIE BAIN

Jai Wolf & Aluna, “Water Sign”

In the two years that Jai Wolf spent writing his second album, he realized he’d actually written not one but two LPs. “I went through some of the most turbulent moments of my life while writing this record,” Wolf shared on Instagram, “and instead of fighting against the storm, I let it shepherd me to new ground.” That new ground begins with his sophomore LP, The Red Eye Home (due out on November 15 via Mom+Pop), and its lead single, “Water Sign” with Aluna. Dropped fittingly during Scorpio season—but also for the sensitive Cancers and Pisces out there— it’s both dreamy and brooding, as Aluna sings of love written in the stars over a drop that crashes gently like ocean waves. — KRYSTAL RODRIGUEZ

Steve Angello, “Hooligans”

With his new single “Hooligans,” Steve Angello delivers a new anthem for cannonballing into the weekend. The producer and Swedish House Mafia member here presents a rave/tech house hybrid that’s delightfully untamed and designed to fill big rooms, from the hip-gyrating drums and roller-coaster builds to the unhinged siren synths (the latter inducing an immediate, pupil-dilating flashback to late-aught electro anthem “Warp 1.9”). “Hooligans” is his third solo single this year, following “ME” and “Skip” (and also, tangentially, following a rare solo release from fellow Mafioso Sebastian Ingrosso last week.) Angello, who earlier this year launched a new weekly program on SiriusXM, is set to perform at the Brooklyn Mirage tonight (October 25). — K.R.

Franc Moody, “Driving on the Wrong Side of the Road”

“I’m a fish out of water / I’m a pineapple on a sea of dough,” begin Franc Moody on their latest single, “Driving on the Wrong Side of the Road” (and yes, shots fired at you pineapple pizza-eaters). The U.K. duo give the state of sorely sticking out a funky and light-hearted soundtrack, complete with a prim, strings-filled introduction, reverberating woodblock hits, and neon-streaked synths, as they work to get back to their authentic state. “Driving on the Wrong Side of the Road” arrives alongside news of a new album, Chewing the Fat (out March 7 via Night Time Stories).

“Armed with mellotrons, drum machines and other crazy synths we delved into a psychedelic and acid driven soundscape with a hint of British seaside crag,” say Franc Moody. “The song explores adventure, decadence and a feeling of getting in over your head; of being enchanted by powerful forces. Lost in a moment before coming to one’s senses and realizing the things that really ground us.” — K.R.

Elderbook, Another Touch

There’s a far deeper story than the standard dance refrain to “put your f–king hands up” on Another Touch, the third album from English producer Elderbrook. He himself calls the album “a journey of self-discovery,” saying the project starts “with someone who has lost themselves so completely they barely recognize the person in the mirror. Everything is shallow and inconsistent in their life so as to protect them from anything which might hold some true meaning. As the album unfolds so too does the story of our ‘hero’ who finds new ways to think about, and reflect on their life, and the lessons learned along the way.”

To that end, the Vintage Culture collab “Run,” which arrives at the album’s halfway point, also seems like the metaphorical turning point for this story arc, with the buoyant production giving a sense of spiritual uplift and forward momentum. The rest of the album, out on Mine Recordings, features collabs with Shimza, Nimino, Carlita, Shakehips and George Fitzgerald. — K.B.

e-Dancer, “Melodica”

Kevin Saunderson resurrects his longstanding e-Dancer alias, with his producer son Dantiez joining him on the project. The producer advises that “Melodica” marks “the start of a new era of e-Dancer, and of Detroit techno,” a lofty statement that Saunderson, who literally co-invented techno, and his scion seem more than capable of executing on. The track is out on the e-Dance/One House imprint. — K.B.

DJ Seinfeld, “Hopecore”

“I’ve been assembling sounds and writing out ideas for my next album, and I wanted to give out a teaser of what that process has been sounding like,” writes DJ Seinfeld of his new single “Hopecore.” If it is indeed any real indication, we’re in for a euphoric ride to trance town. “Hopecore” is exactly how its title sounds: light, bright and ethereal; with soft guitar licks, swirling chords and airy vocals calling for a lighter to “burn this whole thing down.” It’s a crystalline club track rendered in pastels, yet one that will absolutely bang on a proper sound system. DJ Seinfeld recently announced a new North American tour which is set to launch in January 2025. — K.R.

Paul van Dyk, “For An Angel (Öwnboss Remix)”

It’s a holy day for trance heads, with Paul van Dyk’s genre-defining “For an Angel” celebrating its 30-year anniversary. To mark the occasion, the 1994 classic has gotten a series of remixes, including one by Brazilian producer Öwnboss, who punches up the original, adding some weight and size to the etheric original. The remix collection is available as a special exclusive double-vinyl, which includes van Dyk’s own “E-Werk Club Mix.”

Of the anniversary, the German legend observes that “It is fascinating how ‘For an Angel’ still touches so many hearts after all these years,” he adds. “Across generations, young and old, all around the world. Whether it was in 1999 in front of 1.5 million dancing people at the Love Parade or last week in the Berlin Cathedral as an ambient arrangement, the magic of the track seems to grow even more intense over time.” — K.B.

Here’s What Sarah Jessica Parker Thinks About Megan Thee Stallion’s ‘Sex & the City’ Comments

Sarah Jessica Parker has thoughts about Megan Thee Stallion’s Sex and the City analysis.

Earlier this week, the rapper and singer shared on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon that she just recently started watching the iconic series starring Parker, Kristin Davis, Cynthia Nixon and Kim Cattral.

For Parker’s character Carrie, Stallion revealed, “Her hair is good, her makeup is great. I’m pretty sure this dress is great paired with a pair of Manolos. Like she’s always attractive, doing these sick old things. She’s nuts. But you know what [Laughs]? I see a lot of myself in this character, like Carrie really loved drama. Ariana Grande Praises Lady Gaga’s ‘Perfect’ New Single ‘Disease’

Ariana Grande‘s has made her diagnosis of Lady Gaga‘s new single “Disease.”

On Friday (Oct. 25), the Joker 2 star made her long-awaited pop music comeback with the release of her upcoming seventh album’s lead single, a dark dance track that finds Gaga singing, “I could play the doctor, I can cure your disease/ If you were a sinner, I could make you believe.”

When the “Stupid Love” musician posted about the song’s arrival on Instagram, the R.E.M. founder was one of many fans to comment their praise. “i love you so much,” Grande wrote.

“it’s (and you’re) perfect ♡,” she added.

Grande and Gaga previously collaborated on 2020’s “Rain on Me,” which appeared on the latter’s Billboard 200-topping album Chromatica. The duet debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 and later won best pop duo/group performance at the Grammys.

While working on the song, the two artists forged a deep friendship. “She immediately felt like a sister to me,” the Wicked actress wrote of Gaga on social media upon the release of “Rain on Me.” “i love u @ladygaga, u stunning superwoman !”

“[Ariana] was so persistent,” Gaga told Apple Music that year. “She would try over and over again to be friends with me. And I was too ashamed to hang out with her because I didn’t want to project all of this negativity onto something that was healing and so beautiful. And eventually she called me on my s–t. She was like, ‘You’re hiding.’ And I was … and then this friendship blossomed.”

Gaga’s seventh studio album is expected to arrive in February, almost a full year after Grande dropped her own seventh studio album, Eternal Sunshine. Led by Hot 100-topping singles “Yes, And?” and “We Can’t Be Friends (Wait for Your Love),” the LP spent two weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard 200.

Kamala Harris Campaign Office Shooter Had Over 120 Guns At Home

It seems the plot to shoot at Kamala Harris’ campaign office is much more sinister than originally thought. There were over 120 guns found at the suspect’s home.

As reported by TMZ. more details are surfacing on Jeffrey Michael Kelly. Arizona prosecutor Neha Bhatia claims the man who is charged with shooting at the Democratic National Committee office had over 120 different firearms at his residence. More alarming, over 250,000 rounds of ammunition were also discovered the same property. On Wednesday (Oct. 23), Bhatia says that federal agents recovered some alarming accessories including silencers, body armor and scopes. Additionally, a machine gun was also found in his personal vehicle. Given the amount of firepower the prosecutor firmly believes that “this person was preparing to commit an act of mass casualty.”

Local police claim Jeffrey Michael Kelly fired BB pellets at the Democrats’ field office in Tempe and followed things up with additional live rounds that left visible damaged on the windows. Thankfully no one was present during the incident. This is not the first time Kelly has been alleged of being a menace to the Democratic Party. He is also accused of hanging political signs lined with razorblades and bags of white powder labeled “BIOHAZARD.”

Kelly is facing several charges, including three felony counts of acts of terrorism. His lawyer says he is a retired aerospace engineer and is not a risk due to his clean criminal record. The suspect is due to appear in court on Oct. 29 at Maricopa County Superior Court. The office in question supports local campaign efforts for Kamala Harris’ presidential election run.

Elon Musk Has Met With Vladimir Putin For 2 Years, Allegedly

A new report reveals that Elon Musk regularly met for two years with Vladimir Putin, and has faced pressure from him in recent months.

https://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js

A new report claims that tech billionaire Elon Musk has talked frequently with Russian President Vladimir Putin for at least two years. Various sources including former and current U.S., Russian, and European officials stated that conversations between the two ranged from personal to political. The report also said that some officials in the Biden administration were unaware of the extent of their communication.

Details given in the report include “implicit threats” from Russia towards Musk. “In May 2022, Russia’s space chief said in a post on Telegram that Musk would ‘answer like an adult’ for supplying Starlink to Ukraine’s Azov battalion, which the Kremlin had singled out for the ultraright ideology espoused by some members,” said the Wall Street Journal. Soon after on X, formerly Twitter, Musk (who owns the platform) would publicly post that SpaceX was losing money funding those terminals and has been extremely vocal in opposing more American aid to Ukraine.

The article details that Musk also frequently spoke with Sergei Kiriyenko, Putin’s first deputy chief of staff. Kiriyenko has been accused of sowing disinformation online by creating internet domains on social media including X to influence the upcoming presidential election. In addition, the Tesla founder allegedly did not activate Starlink satellites serving the nation of Taiwan as requested by Putin as a favor to Chinese President Xi Jinping.

The news comes as Musk has thrown his full support behind former President Donald Trump’s election campaign, even potentially violating the law by promising $1 million a day to voters in Pennsylvania and other swing states. “If people like Musk get Trump reelected, they’ll expect all kinds of regulatory gifts in their favor,” said Fiona Hill, the former senior director of European affairs to the White House. She remarked that the relationship is not unlike how Russia has cultivated oligarchs and warned of the danger: “He is in a position to command government contracts, potentially with a government position, and there are loads of militaries around the world dependent on his systems, not least Ukraine.”
