Morgan Wallen’s ‘Love Somebody’ Launches at No. 1 on Billboard Hot 100

Morgan Wallen’s “Love Somebody” leaps onto the Billboard Hot 100 at No. 1.

The single, released Oct. 18, arrives as Wallen’s third Hot 100 leader, after Post Malone’s “I Had Some Help,” featuring Wallen, opened on top in May and reigned for six weeks, and “Last Night” dominated for 16 weeks in 2023.

Notably, Wallen maintains the longest Hot 100 reign of the 2020s with “Last Night” – his new No. 1 dethrones Shaboozey’s “A Bar Song (Tipsy),” which a week earlier tallied its 15th week in the top spot (and remains tied with Harry Styles’ 2022 hit “As It Was” for the second-longest command this decade).

“Love Somebody,” on Mercury/Big Loud/Republic, becomes the 1,175th No. 1 in the Hot 100’s 66-year history, and the first to debut atop the chart since “I Had Some Help.”

“‘Love Somebody’ is a little bit of a new approach lyrically and sonically,” Wallen shared in a statement upon the release of the longing love song, which he co-wrote. “I wanted to try something different, with what I wanted to talk about … how I wanted it to sound, and we were inspired by Latin-leaning influences. I’m really excited about this song and pumped that it is out.”

Plus, ROSÉ and Bruno Mars soar onto the Hot 100 at No. 8 with “APT.” BLACKPINK member ROSÉ earns her first top 10 as a soloist, outpacing the group’s No. 13 best set by “Ice Cream,” with Selena Gomez, in 2012. She also makes history as the first female artist prominent in K-pop (Korean pop) to hit the top 10. Mars, meanwhile, adds his milestone 20th Hot 100 top 10.

The Hot 100 blends all-genre U.S. streaming (official audio and official video), radio airplay and sales data, the lattermost metric reflecting purchases of physical singles and digital tracks from full-service digital music retailers; digital singles sales from direct-to-consumer (D2C) sites are excluded from chart calculations. A comedian’s racist joke at the campaign rally for Donald Trump in New York shocked Jermaine Dupri, who expressed his disbelief on social media.

On Sunday (October 27), Madison Square Garden in New York City hosted a campaign rally for Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump. The tone quickly went racist, with one joke shocking veteran producer & rap artist Jermaine Dupri who shared it on social media. Tony Hinchcliffe, a self-described “shock comedian” said that a Black friend of his “had a Halloween party last night. We had fun. We carved watermelons together.”

The So So Def Records founder shared the clip in a post on X, formerly Twitter, writing: “Is this real? How can any Black person be f——g with this?” The odious joke was among several that Hinchcliffe would serve up during his set, which took place a half hour into the rally. It set a tone followed by other speakers, including former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani, Trump lawyer Alina Habba, and media personality Dr. Phil. That joke, among others, left Republicans divided. Some issued public statements afterward, with Florida Congresswoman Maria Elvira Salazar stating in a post on X, formerly Twitter that “This rhetoric doesn’t reflect GOP values.” In another post later, Hinchcliffe wrote “These people have no sense of humor,” adding that people should “watch the whole set.”

Those seeing Dupri’s post were in agreement over how offensive Hinchcliffe’s joke was. They blasted those present at the rally as well as Black Trump supporters. Some also mentioned Florida Representative Byron Donalds being a speaker at the rally as a disgrace. Others also reminded the Hip-Hop icon about his questioning of Democratic presidential nominee Kamala Harris’ credentials in August. One user’s response to Jermaine Dupri was succinct: “This is why people flamed you for that dumb video. This is the s–t they are doing out in the open.”

Distrokid Places 37 Union Employees on ‘Administrative Leave’

DistroKid, the world’s largest independent distributor, has placed 37 union employees on “administrative leave” just an hour before the union was set to meet with company’s lawyers for new contract negotiations, according to an Instagram post by the DistroKid Union on Saturday (Oct. 26). The information provided in this Instagram post was verified by two employees at DistroKid.

The union says that these employees are set to be “replace[d]…with overseas labor” and that this move has impacted about a “fourth” of the company’s staff. Another source close to the situation believes the total is closer to 15% of staff affected. According to an employee at DistroKid, those impacted were part of the company’s Quality Control and Artist Relations (customer service) teams. Another employee claims there were also Quality Assurance Engineers impacted as well. The union adds in the post that DistroKid told them that the reason they want to eliminate these positions is to instead “to spend their salaries on marketing.”

In response to Billboard’s request for comment, a DistroKid spokesperson said: “DistroKid is committed to continuously enhancing support for independent artists around the world by expanding to 24/7 customer service with faster response times. To achieve this, we have identified solutions that allow us to deliver more scalable and exceptional service, ensuring that artists around the globe receive the high-quality support they deserve. This includes considering difficult decisions that may affect valued team members as we continue our focus on providing the best artist experience possible.”

For the last year or so, DistroKid has contracted a third party customer service team, based in the Phillippines, to help with artists’ needs. This move to place 37 works on administrative leave seeks to eliminate its in-house, U.S.-based Artist Relations team and replace it with more third party and international workers. The company believes this will help them with the influx of international DistroKid users who need round-the-clock services in multiple languages.

The DistroKid Union was formed in February as part of the National Association of Broadcast Engineers and Technicians, a union within the Communication Workers of America (NABET-CWA). According to an announcement from NABET-CWA about the formation of DistroKid’s union, “workers at the company were subjected to a ferocious anti-union campaign that included multiple, one-on-one anti-union meetings and near-constant anti-union propaganda. The company president also sent several anti-union letters to workers.”

“Despite attempts to dissuade workers, they returned a vote 45-28 in favor of joining NABET-CWA. This effort succeeded due to the unified efforts of the organizing committee, which kept the entire campaign hidden from management until it went public, a rare early coup for the team,” the announcement continued. The DistroKid workers all work remotely, but their union joined the NABET-CWA local 51016, based in New York City.

This news comes after a few years of rapid expansion for DistroKid, which now distributes 30-40% of the world’s new music. Two years ago, it introduced DistroVid, which enables artists to upload an unlimited number of music videos to leading digital service providers for a flat fee. Then, last year, the company launched an iPhone app that featured an AI-powered mastering tool, called Mixea, to help artist prep their songs and announced that it had acquired music web platform Bandzoogle, an e-commerce business that helps artists create websites and sell their music and merchandise.

Update: This article was updated at 1:55 PM e.t. to include the claim that there were also Quality Assurance Engineers, a different role from the Quality Control team, that were placed on administrative leave.

Bruce Springsteen Denies ‘Wrong’ Reports About His Billionaire Status, Says He Blew Cash on ‘Superfluous Things’

More than half a century into his career, Bruce Springsteen is one of the biggest rock stars on the planet. But is he a billionaire? After Forbes magazine reported in July that the blue collar hero had an estimated fortune that it pegged as conservatively north of $1.1 billion, the New Jersey icon set the record straight this week in an interview with the U.K.’s Telegraph (paywalled).

“I’m not a billionaire. I wish I was, but they got that real wrong,” Springsteen, 75, told the paper without offering up a more accurate net worth. He did, however, note that the figure was even less likely because, he’s spent “too much money on superfluous things,” again without specifically describing what those things are.

Trending on Billboard

Springsteen did, however, hint at where some of that money might have gone last week when he spoke to Business Insider in London last week to promote the new Hulu doc, Road Diary: Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band. “I pay them a tremendous amount of money. That greases the wheels pretty good,” he said of his trusty E Street brethren, which include the band’s six longest-tenured core members, as well eight additional live performers and a four-man horn section. “And then, I’m a pretty nice boss. The truth is, you need to cast your band well.”

Back in July, Forbes cited Springsteen selling his music catalog to Sony in 2021 for an estimated $500-$550 million as one of the main drivers of his wealth; it was the the largest deal ever for an individual body of work. Other revenue streams that the financial magazine said contributed to the Boss’ coffers: a 2023 tour that sold more than 1.6 million tickets and generated $380 million, following on the heels of the 267-show sold-out run of his 2017-2018/2021 Springsteen on Broadway show, as well as career sales of more than 140 million albums globally and his band’s current tour, which is slated to run through mid-2025.

Immigrant Disparager Bozo Elon Musk Once Worked Illegally In The U.S.

Elon Musk continues to oppose undocumented immigrants in the United States. A new report has found he once worked illegally in this country.

The polarizing entrepreneur has been openly critical about the country’s border control. As spotted on Raw Story the Tesla CEO seemingly started his career without having the proper paperwork in place. The Washington Post reports that back when Elon Musk had big dreams when he was attending Stanford University. In 1995 the South African native was in America on a student visa but during the fall semester he apparently informed the institution that he would no longer be taking classes.

According to the terms of the legal document he should have left the country but he continued to live in the United States attempting to jumpstart his company Zip2 (formerly known as Global Link Information Network). In 1996 a venture capital firm agreed to invest into Zip2 but quickly found out that both Elon Musk and his brother Kimbal Musk were here illegally thus the firm demanded the two siblings acquire their work visa in 45 days or the deal was off. “Their immigration status was not what it should be for them to be legally employed running a company in the U.S.,” Zip2 board member Derek Proudian said in an exclusive statement to The Post. “We don’t want our founder being deported.”

This is particularly ironic given Elon Musk has spreader anti-immigrant conspiracy theories through his social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter. Earlier this year he very critical of Joe Biden’s reelection campaign tactics and hinted that it immigrants would cause terrorist attacks. “This administration is both importing voters and creating a national security threat from unvetted illegal immigrants. It is highly probable that the groundwork is being laid for something far worse than 9/11. Just a matter of time.” he wrote.

Recently Musk attended Donald Trump’s rally in Butler, PA. and jumped around like a fanboy and went on to spread mistruths about Kamala Harris and running mate Tim Walz. Elon has yet to formally respond to The Washington Post‘s report.

‘The Daily Show’ Puts Together Donald Trump Montage Echoing Adolf Hitler’s Speeches

On Sunday (Oct. 27), Donald Trump held his latest Nazi-friendly rally in New York City at Madison Square Garden. While most of the outrage came due to guest speaker, Tony Hinchcliffe, calling Puerto Rico an “island of garbage in the middle of the ocean,” Trump’s rhetoric continues to be akin to Adolf Hitler’s when his Swastika crew held its own rally in MSG back in 1939.

To make that point the producers over at The Daily Show put together a montage of both Donald Trump and Adolf Hitler’s speeches to show just how similar the two men are when talking about their enemies, immigrants and political opponents. From referring to immigrants as “vermin” and suggesting they “poison the blood” of our country (America is literally a country made up of immigrants), Donald Trump seems to be copying Hitler’s entire playbook when it comes to churning out divisive and hateful rhetoric to gin up his hardcore MAGA base and fill them with anger and frustration against people of color.

If you actually keep up with Donald Trump this shouldn’t come as a surprise as his ex-wife, Ivana Trump, revealed that Trump kept copies of Hitler’s speeches by their bedside while they were married. Keep in mind this was decades before Trump ran for president as he and Ivana were married from 1977 to 1990.

Still, Trump’s hardcore supporters will continue to support their orange overlord regardless of what he says or does, but when people wonder how Hitler was able to get away with mass genocide while convincing a huge swath of the German population that he was doing the right thing, we’re living it.

Check out The Daily Show’s montage of America’s version of Adolf Hitler spewing hateful rhetoric, and let us know your thoughts in the comments section below.

Van Jones Keeps It Real On Trump & Harris Double Standard: “They’re Not Taking The Same Exam”

HipHopWired Featured Video
President Trump Speaks At White House Prison Reform Summit

CNN commentator Van Jones brought up a good (albeit obvious AF) point regarding a glaring double standard applied to Kamala Harris and Donald Trump in the race for the presidency. During CNN’s Town Hall with Harris, which aired Wednesday (Oct. 23) , Harris answered some tough questions from audience members, and she held her own. However, pundits, especially right-wing pundits, predictably picked her apart and scrutinized her performance in ways they don’t when Trump — arguably the most boorish, childish, bigoted, and idiotic blowhard in the history of modern politics is in the spotlight.

From thegrio:

On the heels of major news that Donald Trump was quoted admiring Hitler’s generals and was called “fascist” by his longest-serving chief of staff, Harris found herself being criticized by some TV analysts after the town hall for sometimes having long, nuanced answers to policy questions. Trump declined to attend the debate altogether despite multiple debates being standard for a presidential campaign.

“Donald Trump and Kamala Harris are not taking the same exam. And I think it bothers people,” Jones said during a political panel. “He gets to lawless, she has to be flawless. That’s what’s unfair.

“That’s what’s unfair tonight. They’re not taking the same exam. Look she has policies. She may not articulate them perfectly every time. She may not put the stories in the right places.  But she’s fighting for actual ideas that will help real people. And he’s talking about people’s penises … It’s pissing me off.”

Now, listen: Typically, Van Jones is a flip-flopping Aaron Burr-ass political analyst who straddles the line between progressive and conservative and can’t seem to decide whether he wants to denounce Trump or hump his leg a little — but this time, he’s pretty spot on.

Harris’ critics have balked about her not revealing any specific policy ideas, despite the fact that she has been far more candid regarding details of her plans than the guy who said on the debate stage that he merely has “concepts of a plan.”

We should have no interest in any political analyst who is complaining that Harris can have “long, nuanced answers to policy questions” while Trump is out here screaming like a tinfoil hat-wearing maniac about pet-eating Haitians, cancer-causing-windmills, medical Lysol-injections, military boat-sinking batteries that may cause shark attacks, and cops who need “one real rough, nasty day” where they can freely commit acts of police brutality.

I mean, look at what Trump said about late pro-golfer Arnold Palmer just this week. Imagine the media uproar if Kamala Harris stood on a nationally televised stage in front of a massive audience and said this:

Arnold Palmer was all man and I say that in all due respect to women, and I love women, but this is a guy that was all man…When he took showers with the other pros they came out of there, they said, ‘Oh my God. That’s unbelievable.’”

So, yeah — Harris and Trump might be running in the same race, but they’re not being graded on the same curve. Not by a long shot.
