French Montana’s new documentary is dedicated to his mom, Khadija, and other immigrant moms who have “sacrificed for their kids in this country,” the rapper shared in a TMZ Live interview on Wednesday (Nov. 20).

Montana, whose birth name is Karim Kharbouch, immigrated to America from Morocco when he was 13 years old. His mom worked three jobs to support the family after his father moved back to the North African country.

“We overstayed [our] visas,” Montana recalled. “My father was trying to create an opportunity for us to live the American dream, but he didn’t succeed at that. He got tired of it. He wanted to go back to Africa and live like a king. He told my mom ‘We can take all the kids and leave French here.’ My mother said ‘I’m not going to leave my son here,’ so he said ‘You can stay with him.’ He felt like she betrayed him.”

“He left me, my mother, my two little brothers. None of us spoke English. I couldn’t get a job, couldn’t go to school. I didn’t have paperwork. The only thing to do was to hustle and hit the streets. It was something that happened by mistake and turned into a miracle.”

The French Montana Story: For Khadija, premiered at the Tribeca Film festival last year. The documentary has been eight years in the making, partially because the process of getting his mother a green card and reuniting her with family in Morocco for the first time in 25 years.

“She’s the real French Montana,” he said. “She’s the one that sacrificed.”

“It shining a light on a mother’s love,” he added of the film. “A light on all mothers, especially immigrant mothers that sacrificed for their kids in this country.”

Later in the interview, Montana talks U.S. immigration laws and collaborating with Lara Trump, daughter-in-law of president-elect Donald Trump. “I’m not too involved in politics, Laura Trump was somebody I knew on a personal level but honestly, I don’ t like the immigration laws. Hopefully we can do something about that,” he added. “That’s all a conversation, something I would have to speak to [Laura about] to try and talk some sense into him [Trump].”

Jussie Smollett Conviction Overturned for False Hate Crime Claim | Billboard News

Jussie Smollet’s 2019 conviction for making a false hate crime claim has been overturned. Keep watching for the full story.

Narrator:

The Illinois Supreme Court has overturned actor/singer Jussie Smollett’s conviction on allegations that he staged a racist and homophobic attack against himself in downtown Chicago and then lied to police in 2019. In 2021, the ‘Empire’ actor was convicted of five felony counts of disorderly conduct for allegedly staging a hate crime against himself and was sentenced to 150 days in county jail. Smollett has always maintained his innocence. He has testified that “there is no hoax.” We caught up with him in the studio earlier in September where he shared this:

Jussie Smollett:

It’s really about knowing who you are and being OK with that, and recognizing your flaws and acknowledging your flaws but not letting anyone else tell you who you are.

Narrator:

That same month, the court heard an appeal that argued that a special prosecutor should not have been allowed to intervene after the Cook County State’s Attorney initially dropped charges.

But today, according to the Chicago Tribune, Smollett’s conviction has been overturned. Billboard received a statement from Special Prosecutor Dan K. Webb regarding the Illinois Supreme Court’s reversal of convictions and sentence of Jussie Smollett. “We respectfully disagree with the court’s factual and legal reasoning which upends long-standing Illinois precedent.”

We have also heard from Smollett’s lawyer Nenye Uche: “This was not a prosecution based on facts, rather it was a vindictive persecution and such a proceeding has no place in our criminal justice system. Ultimately, we are pleased that the rule of law was the big winner today. We are thankful to the Illinois Supreme Court for restoring order to Illinois’ criminal law jurisprudence.”

Danny Ocean finishes the lyrics to “Me Rehúso,” “Dembow,” “Amor” and more!

Danny Ocean:

What’s up? It’s Danny Ocean. I’m here at Billboard and I’m going to be finishing up the lyrics of my own songs.

“If I got your hopes up/ I didn’t mean to/ I know that in love, when it’s real/ It comes back/ It comes back.”

“Even though you are on the other side of the Atlantic/ Bambina, it feels fantastic/ I send you an elastic kiss.”

“You are on fire/ The most divine flow of the whole beach/ She said ‘Dani, put one of Raui’s’/ Exactly.”

“Someone I can fall in love with/ Someone to help me with my fears/ you, me, we equal two/ And if we raise it/ Everything will be better/ Because cold plus cold/ Equals heat.”

“Come a lil’ closer and do it again/ That I want to tell you something/ That in every step you make/ No/ I wrinkle/ I melt for you slowly.”

“I have been watching/ Admiring your flow all night/ That’s all I know.”

Jasiel Nuñez Nabs First Entry on a Billboard Albums Chart With ‘La Odisea’

Guadalajara, Mexico-born singer-songwriter Jasiel Nuñez scores his first entry on a Billboard albums chart with La Odisea, his second studio effort, which launches at Nos. 8 and 6 on the Top Latin Albums and Regional Mexican Albums charts, respectively (dated Nov. 30).

La Odisea, a double album comprising 20 tracks, was released Nov. 7 on Double P Records, home to Tito Double P, who also placed a top 10 debut on both charts in 2024. The set starts with 9,000 equivalent album units earned in the tracking week of Nov. 8-15, according to Luminate.

Trending on Billboard

Streaming activity contributes to the majority of La Odisea’s first week-sum, which equates to 12.7 million official on-demand streams of the album’s songs, while the remaining units stem from a negligible amount of activity from sales and track-equivalent album units. On Top Latin Albums, one unit equals to one album sale, 10 individual tracks sold from an album, or 3,750 ad-supported or 1,250 paid/subscription on-demand official audio and video streams for a song on the album.

In addition to label mate Tito Double P, Nuñez follows the footsteps of the eight other regional Mexican soloists who achieved a top 10 debut album this year. In total, 19 albums across Latin genres launched in the top 10 on Top Latin Albums in 2024, 12 of which (by groups and solo singers) belong to the regional Mexican genre.

Here is that striking list of regional Mexican top 10 debuts on Top Latin Albums and Regional Mexican Albums charts in 2024:

Debut Date, Debut Pos., Title, Artist
Jan. 6, No. 9, Distorsión, Oscar Maydon
Jan. 20, No. 5, Corridos Bélicos, Vol. IV, Luis R Conriquez

With La Odisea, Jasiel Nuñez scores his first entry on his first try on any albums chart, after placing six songs on the multi-metric Hot Latin Songs chart, five through Peso Pluma partnerships.

In addition to two Peso Pluma collabs, “Bipolar,” which also features Junior H, and “Me Activo,” 24-year-old Nuñez places a third song from La Odisea on the tally–which combines radio airplay, streaming activity and digital sales into its formul–, there, “En Mi Mundo,” also with Pluma, debuts at No. 31.
