Greatest Pop Stars of the 21st Century Podcast: Beyoncé (No. 1)

On today’s (Dec. 4) episode of the Greatest Pop Stars of the 21st Century podcast, we finally get to No. 1 on our list with the period’s true standard-setter, a pop star who set the bar 25 years ago and has only continued to raise it in the years since. (Read our No. 1 Greatest Pop Star essay about Beyoncé here.)

Host Andrew Unterberger is joined by a pair of longtime Beyologists in Billboard R&B/Hip-Hop chart manager Trevor Anderson and staff writer Kyle Denis to recap a full quarter century of all things Beyoncé. We start by breaking down the big-picture reasons why she was ultimately named our No. 1 Greatest Pop Star of the century, as well as the argument for Taylor Swift and whether or not anyone we think else could have really gotten into the discussion. We also share some quick thoughts about our 100 Greatest Beyoncé Moments list, and talk about what other artists (if any) we could’ve put together such a list for.

Then, we run through 25 years of Beyoncé: an absolutely singular journey, from her days lighting up TRL as the leader of Destiny’s Child, to her game-changing solo debut, to her industry-quaking run as one of the great albums artists of the 2010s, to a universally venerated legend who continues to pursue (and achieve) greatness in every part of her artistry. Then, we have some fun playing a little game of “A or Bey,” remember some of our favorite in-song moments, performances and oddities from the Beyoncé back catalogue, and make some predictions — including a couple awards-related guesses — about what the future may hold for the Queen.

Kesha Channels Goddess Venus in Stunning ‘Rebirth’ Playboy Shoot

Kesha is reborn, and she’s celebrating her new musical chapter with a goddess-inspired Playboy photoshoot.

In the photoset for Playboy’s Spotlight of the Month, directed by Brooke James, depicts Kesha as an angel as well as Venus — the Roman goddess of love and beauty — emerging from from a shell, just like in the famous “Birth of Venus” painting by Italian artist Sandro Botticelli. The superstar also appears like goddess Artemis, the Greek goddess of the hunt, the moon and nature, as she pulls back a bow and arrow. See all the photos here.

In the corresponding interview, Kesha says, “I feel like a completely different person. I feel reborn. I feel like I’m doing everything for the first time again, which is maybe strange because I’ve been doing this for 15 years. Everything looks brighter, everything feels different. Everything sounds different. It just feels like I’m living a whole new reincarnation and I’m lucky enough to get to all this over again.”

ADA is also working together with Crush Music, Kesha’s management company, to oversee marketing and promotion for the pop star’s next album, expected to arrive in 2025. Disney Finally Turns Disney+ Into The One-Stop Shop For All of Its Streaming Services With ESPN+’s Addition

Disney Final Adds ESPN+ To Disney+ Completing Trio Bundle

The television streaming market has become so crowded, but Disney hopes this latest move has made it very simple for customers looking to cut the cord and not break the bank in the process.

Disney’s trio bundle is finally all under Disney+‘s roof with ESPN+’s late edition to the lineup. The lineup already featured Hulu and a streaming platform where you can watch all things House of the Mouse and Marvel Studios.

ESPN+ arrived in the lineup on Wednesday, December 4. It gets its own tile on the Disney+ home screen and will give subscribers access to ESPN’s library, studio shows, and select live sporting events.

Deadline reports that during a Zoom briefing with the press, executives said the initial offering of sports programming will include NBA and WNBA games, Australian Open tennis, and longtime studio shows like Pardon the Interruption. This latest move comes as Disney still plans to launch a standalone “flagship” ESPN streaming service in fall 2025, which ironically will also live on the streaming platform, according to the website.

Speaking on the move, Disney+’s President Alisa Bowden called it “the next step in both the evolution of Disney+ and also ESPN’s streaming future.”

When asked why current ESPN+ subscribers would be incentivized to keep their subscriptions to the standalone streaming service, Disney said their goal is to reach casual sports fans by offering live sporting events that they might not come to ESPN for.

Per Deadline:

John Lasker, SVP of ESPN+, said the 5,000 live events set to be offered via Disney+ to bundle subscribers in the first 90 days represent “a small fraction” of the 30,000 events available each year on ESPN+. “Part of the design there is to stimulate engagement and interest in sports to a casual sports fan that might not otherwise come to ESPN in their normal media behavior. So it’s not creating an alternative to ESPN or ESPN+, but more an extended reach opportunity.”

Just sounds like another eventual price hike. Just saying.

‘The Book Of Hov: A Tribute To Jay-Z’ Book Releases On Jay-Z’s Birthday

Jay-Z’s The Book of Hov exhibit at the Brooklyn Public Library last year was a huge hit amongst Hip-Hop fans. Now, anyone who missed out on the exhibition will be able to bring it home as The Book of Hov will be turned into an actual book.

The Associated Press is reporting that the exhibit dedicated to arguably the greatest rapper alive will now be available in print form as The Book of Hov: A Tribute to Jay-Z will be available Wednesday (Dec. 4), as Jay-Z celebrates his 55th year on this Earth. Available to purchase on Assouline, the 432-page book features what the 600,000 visitors of The Book of Hov exhibition saw first-hand at the Brooklyn Public Library divided into eight chapters with 675 illustrations.

Per the AP News:

“The Book of Hov: A Tribute to Jay-Z” unveils Jay-Z’s deep connection with the art world and his rising business ventures, reveals his unique method of composing rhymes mentally and his criminal and social justice activism. It offers a tribute to Baseline Studios where “The Blueprint” and “The Black Album” were birthed. The book also captures him articulating his vision and manifesting his future through a series of interviews spanning several years.

Some of the book’s other highlights include the guitar Jay-Z played at the Glastonbury Festival; Daniel Arsham’s sculpture of the iconic “HOV Hands”; his Rock & Roll Hall of Fame award; and hundreds of paper planes, which were created by New York City schoolchildren who wrote their dreams inside.

“The Book of Hov: A Tribute to Jay-Z” will be available in three editions: The classic version for $120, the ultimate for $2,000 and price upon request for five special limited- edition copies with a tri-fold each housed in a bronze slipcase artwork by Arsham.

A portion of the proceeds from the sale of the special limited edition will be donated to the Brooklyn Public Library.

We don’t know about y’all, but if we’re putting down $2,000 for a book about Jay-Z it better come with a chance to meet him in person or a golden ticket kind of contest or something. Just sayin’.

Lil Scrappy Responds to Criticism of His Newborn Son

The internet knucked and Lil Scrappy most definitely bucked back. The ATL star just welcomed a new baby boy with hairstylist Shakira. During this joyful time, online trolls criticized Scrappy’s baby and his decision to have another child without being in a committed relationship. There’s only so much till you get Scrapp goin’ & he quickly made a video response saying, “To the people that be having negative stuff to say about a kid, a baby and me having a baby and I’m not with nobody. Like I’m a single man. Like that’s pretty dumb. You feel what I’m saying? That’s pretty dumb. That’s ignorant as f**k you feel me and I’d be like, dude, you can’t get mad at them because they probably not happy with their life. I’m happy with mine.”

Long story short, leave that man alone.

This all happened less than a month since Lil Scrappy’s ex-wife Bambi was showing off her promise ring from her new boo. Instantly, the Knuck If You Buck Rapper’s comment section was filled with L’s haters assuming that this bothered him. True to his style, Lil Scrappy responded by saying, “Hate is a strong word, strong word. I just don’t even have the energy for that s**t anymore. It’s about getting money and taking care of them kids, man. I don’t even look that way. I just keep moving, get my money. Do what I’ve been trying to do for the longest, like, I’m doing it.”

It’s safe to say he is healed from that breakup (allegedly).

The 8 Biggest Music Publishing Stories of 2024: TikTok Battles, Spotify Bundles, ‘BBL Drizzy’ & More

As 2024 comes to a close, Billboard looks back at the most consequential music publishing stories of the year.

Music publishing has long been considered to be a slow and steady revenue stream for the industry — the business of rounding up pennies (or, rather, micro-pennies!) for the underlying musical work copyright. But anyone who works in the field will tell you that in publishing there is plenty of drama and action behind the scenes, even if it feels, to outsiders, like the drama surrounds overly-complicated minutiae.

And at least on that first part, those outsiders might be right — many of these topics are way too complicated, but publishers and songwriters believe every cent is worth fighting for, even if that means working within the confines of archaic systems and against Big Tech to get it done.

This year, the publishing business was marked by Hipgnosis’ catalog woes, the domino effect of UMPG writers getting removed from TikTok, and the NMPA “declaring war” on Spotify for cutting royalty payments by an estimated $150 million to publishers over the next year. The MLC also found itself increasingly at the center of the action. From its redesignation that kicked off the new year (and still isn’t done), to its lawsuits against Spotify and Pandora and figuring out the nine-figure adjustment in royalties owed to publishers from 2018-2022 underpayments, the collection society, which is still a relative newcomer, has become a force in the publishing sector.

And with increasing calls for PRO reform and AI threatening to alter the songwriting process, there is surely more drama ahead for publishers in 2025. Let the games begin.

Beyoncé’s Iconic ‘Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It)’ Music Video Surpasses 1 Billion Views on YouTube

If you like it, then you should’ve put a ring on it — but a billion views isn’t a bad compromise. Fresh off of being named Billboard‘s No. 1 greatest pop star of the 21st century, Beyoncé‘s iconic music video for “Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It)” has surpassed one billion views on YouTube a full 15 years after it was first uploaded, becoming her second visual to reach the milestone after “Halo.”

In the three-and-a-half-minute black-and-white video, Bey — flanked by two other dancers in leggy black leotards — dances her heart out for the entirety of the empowering, insanely catchy I Am… Sasha Fierce single. “If you liked it then you shoulda put a ring on it/ Don’t be mad once you see that he want it,” she sings, staring down the camera.

Trending on Billboard

Both the track and visual serve as some of the most iconic pieces in Bey’s career. In addition to “Single Ladies” spending four weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 2008, the Jake Nava-directed visual’s continuous dance sequence — choreographed by Frank Gatson Jr. and JaQuel Knight — found the 32-time Grammy winner flawlessly executing a series of generation-defining moves that are still being replicated today.

Plus, the “Single Ladies” video was behind one of the buzziest moments of 2009: Ye, then known still as Kanye West, memorably interrupting Taylor Swift’s VMAs acceptance speech for best female video and declaring that Bey’s project — being “one of the best videos of all time,” as he put it — should’ve won instead.

In the moment, the “Texas Hold ‘Em” singer was stunned — and a little horrified — but flipped the script when “Single Ladies” later won video of the year. Forfeiting her own acceptance-speech time, Bey famously invited Billboard‘s future No. 2 greatest pop star of the 21st century back on stage to finish her thank yous.

Add your view to more than a billion others by watching “Single Ladies” above.

Here’s How Beyoncé’s Mom Tina Knowles Reacted to Singer Topping Billboard’s Greatest Pop Star of 21st Century List

When you’ve been on the kind of career rip that Beyoncé‘s had for the past two decades, you get used to winning. That was the message from the singer’s mother, Tina Knowles, when TMZ caught up with her on Tuesday (Dec. 3), just hours after Billboard revealed that Bey was named the No. 1 Greatest Pop Star of the 21st Century.

Asked to respond to the honor, Knowles said, “that’s nice… very nice.” As for the follow-up question about whether the family ever gets used to the accolades heaped on their their daughter, Knowles offered up a succinct, “yeah.”

Trending on Billboard

The expectation of excellence was mirrored by Bey’s father Matthew Knowles as well, who boasted about the singer’s accomplishments in a loving post on X on Tuesday. “Beyoncé was shy growing up. But, as soon as she started singing, it was like a different person emerged and we knew from a very young age that she was destined to pursue her passion in music,” he wrote. “She turned everyone around her into a believer with her determination, work ethic, stage presence and talent.”

He also addressed his daughter directly, saying, “Beyoncé, I am so proud of you. This is another one of your many major distinctions, yet I sit here not surprised because I knew you were meant for greatness from the moment I held you in my arms for the first time!”

“While Taylor Swift is the century’s biggest pop star by the numbers — from album sales to streams to touring dominance — our editorial staff chose Beyoncé as our Greatest Pop Star of the Century, based on her full 25 years of influence, evolution and impact,” reads the intro to the essay about the Beyoncé.

The No. 1 slot placed Queen Bey over Swift (No. 2), as well as the rest of the top 10, which included Rihanna, Adele, Ariana Grande, Justin Bieber, Kanye West, Britney Spears, Lady Gaga and Drake.
