Ariana Grande’s ‘Sweetener’ Rises Into Top 10 of TikTok Billboard Top 50 | Billboard News

Ariana Grande, Wham!, Madonna and more make their way into the top 10, but which artist will take No. 1 on the TikTok Billboard Top 50?

Tetris Kelly:
A crop of classics break into the top 10 while the leader approaches a chart record. “Maps” by the Yeah Yeah Yeahs returns to the top spot, giving it a grand total of eight weeks at No. 1 on the TikTok Billboard Top 50 for the chart posting Dec. 12. It’s two weeks away from matching Tommy Richman’s 10-week record.

Our biggest debut of the week is the choir version of “Like a Prayer.” The Madonna classic, reworked for the Deadpool and Wolverine movie, has found new life on TikTok thanks to a trend featuring Pepe from the Muppets. Our other top 10 debut comes from Malcolm Todd. “Chest Pain” debuts at six because users wanna show off the ones they love.

While Ariana’s been ruling the box office and earning a Golden Globe nomination, her 2018 track “Sweetener” has made a comeback. It bounds 36 to 8 thanks to everyone getting down the track. And our final track in the top 10 is Wham!’s holiday classic “Last Christmas.”

Every Thursday, Billboard will bring you the verified list of the hottest songs on TikTok by monitoring music discovery and engagement on the platform in the United States. To find the TikTok Billboard Top 50 each week, users can simply go to any sound detail page and tap the top right button to access the charts page.

GloRilla’s 2024 has been filled with big wins. From being named Billboard’s Hottest Female Rapper of 2024 to being one of the Associated Press’ Entertainers of the Year, we run through her big wins!

Tetris Kelly:
It’s GloRilla’s big year! GloRilla is adding more accolades to an already illustrious 2024. The Associated Press has named GloRilla one of their Entertainers of the Year. And earlier this week, Glo’s hit “TGIF” was named the best song of 2024 by Time magazine. Time says of Glo: “For GloRilla, being single is a supernatural experience. When the Memphis rapper isn’t in a relationship, she’s not just free from headaches and responsibilities; she’s powered up, unstoppable, glowing.” Big Glo has truly taken the world by storm in 2024, even us here at Billboard are “right here with her” as we named Glo the hottest female MC of 2024. It was a big year for GloRilla and we can’t wait to see what she brings in 2025.

President Biden Issues Historic Amount of Pardons & Clemency

President Joe Biden is issuing a record-setting amount of pardons and clemency in one day – and states that there will be more to come.

On Thursday, the White House announced that President Joe Biden was issuing clemency for almost 1,500 people sentenced to home confinement and 39 other individuals convicted of non-violent crimes. The executive action is the largest such act of granting clemency and pardons in the history of the presidency. According to the White House, President Biden had already issued more commutations of sentences in his term at this point than any other recent president.

A list of the 39 individuals who received pardons has been released by the White House, along with brief biographies for each of them. Many had been convicted of non-violent crimes and had “proven rehabilitation” through their actions afterward, with many serving in the military, and others serving their communities as nurses and addiction counselors. Some of those receiving commutations to their sentences are expected to be released this month, with others set to be freed in March 2025.

“My administration will continue reviewing clemency petitions to advance equal justice under the law, promote public safety, support rehabilitation and reentry, and provide meaningful second chances,” President Biden said in a statement. According to CNN, Biden is in constant talks with the Justice Department’s Office of the Pardon Attorney as well as White House Counsel Ed Siskel.

The action comes after the president was under constant criticism from politicians and figures on both sides of the aisle after he moved to issue a blanket pardon for his son, Hunter Biden, at the beginning of the month. Hunter Biden had been convicted on tax charges as well as a charge related to having a firearm. There is no word on whether the president will consider retroactive pardons for political figures who have been marked for retribution by President-elect Donald Trump once he assumes office in late January 2025. Another question will be if President Biden will heed advice from Democratic lawmakers to commute the sentences of the 40 prisoners who remain on federal death row in the nation.

Converse sneakers with a Nike swoosh?! We thought we’d never see the day, but the good folks over at A Ma Maniére are making it a reality and truth be told, we low-key loving it.

According to Highsnobiety, A Ma Maniére’s remix of the classic Chuck Taylors will be donning the timeless Nike swoosh on their iteration of the sneaker and while their previous Nike and Jordan collaborations didn’t exactly fly off the shelves, we wouldn’t be surprised if these joints are hard to come by should they release.

The revelation of their A Ma Maniére x Chuck Taylors were presented overseas. While we wait for them to officially release, you can almost hear the appetite for these building up amongst hypebeasts.

Per Highsnobiety:

At a dinner in London, it presented guests with the ultimate mash-up shoe: a Converse Chuck Taylor with a Nike swoosh.

America’s two most famous footwear brands collide on one shoe.

It’s by no means a novel concept, others have tried to do it in the past (including Virgil Abloh) but A Ma Maniére becomes the first brand to have done it officially. This isn’t a bootleg, it’s the real thing, presented at a dinner hosted with Converse.

The brand has used a beige-hued canvas Chuck 70 (a more premium, chunky-soled version of the Chuck Taylor) as its base and added a thick black Nike swoosh to the outside — on the inside, the usual Converse branding remains. And an extra piece of Nike branding can be found on the metal lace charm.

These are butter. Just sayin’.

While these are limited to friends and family, we hope Nike pulls the trigger on these because they kinda go hard.

Would you cop a pair of the A Ma Maniére x Chuck Taylors if they dropped? Let us know in the comments section below.

Social Media Trashes ‘TIME’ Naming Trump Person of The Year

Donald Trump has been named TIME Magazine’s Person of The Year for the second time, and social media users displeased at the choice made their opinions known.

On Thursday (December 12), TIME Magazine announced that President-elect Donald Trump would be its Person of The Year for the second time. He had graced the cover of the publication after winning the presidential election back in 2016. To commemorate the occasion, Trump was at the New York Stock Exchange in lower Manhattan to ring the opening bell as his family stood nearby. Chants of “U-S-A!!” could be heard during the moment. “He has reshaped the American electorate, activating young male voters who propelled him to a decisive victory that saw him win the popular vote for the first time and turn every swing state red,” the outlet wrote in the issue.

“His 2024 win is history-making in multiple ways: he will be the oldest President in U.S. history, and he was convicted earlier this year by a New York jury of 34 counts of fraud, making him the first convicted felon to be elected President.”

Time’s editor-in-chief Sam Jacobs praised Trump in the magazine, writing: “On the cusp of his second presidency, all of us — from his most fanatical supporters to his most fervent critics — are living in the Age of Trump.” Trump himself has unsurprisingly had a turbulent relationship with TIME Magazine – while he praised TIME as a “very important” publication and said being named person of the year in 2016 was a “tremendous honor”. But he would sour on the outlet’s description of him being “president of the divided states of America.” He also blasted the magazine in 2011 for leaving him off a list of influential people, claiming it had “lost all credibility”. In 2013, upset over another snub, he stated that TIME would soon go out of business. He’s also criticized other Person of The Year choices, including pop superstar Taylor Swift who nabbed the honor last year.

The news of Trump’s becoming TIME’s Person of The Year was met with disbelief by many, including those on social media. Democratic presidential nominee and current Vice President Kamala Harris was on the shortlist for the honor, as well as Catherine, Princess of Wales and tech billionaire Elon Musk, who is a close advisor to Trump and poised to be head of the Department of Government Efficiency.

Mariah Carey Has Now Ruled the Billboard Hot 100 in a Record 20 Different Years

Adding yet another honor to her Billboard chart résumé, Mariah Carey has now ranked at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 in a record-extending, and milestone, 20 distinct years.

As previously reported, Carey‘s 1994 anthem “All I Want for Christmas Is You” returns to No. 1 for a 15th total week atop the Hot 100.

With the song’s latest coronation, on the Hot 100 dated Dec. 14, 2024, Carey has now placed at No. 1 in a record-extending 20 distinct years (per chart dates), encompassing her 19 career leaders: 1990-2000, 2005-06, 2008 and, thanks to “All I Want for Christmas Is You,” 2019-24.

Next up are four acts that have each spent time atop the Hot 100 in 10 individual years: Paul McCartney (including his billings with Wings), Beyoncé, Michael Jackson and Madonna.

Below is a look at the five superstar acts with such uncommon longevity atop the Hot 100.

Carey, meanwhile, marveled at her sleigh ride back to the Hot 100’s highest bough when the news was revealed to her – while she was performing in concert – Monday night (Dec. 9) at PNC Arena in Raleigh, N.C. “Last night, I found out that ‘All I Want For Christmas Is You’ returned to #1 on the Billboard Hot 100,” Carey shared (Dec. 10), alongside a repost of a fan video of her twins, Moroccan and Monroe, handing her flowers. “I couldn’t have dreamed of a better time or place to celebrate the news than on stage with my amazing fans, my kids and my #Christmastime tour family. I love you and am so grateful to you all.”

‘Vanderpump Rules’ Star James Kennedy Arrested for Misdemeanor Domestic Violence

Vanderpump Rules star James Kennedy has been arrested for misdemeanor domestic violence, the Burbank Police Department confirms to Billboard. TMZ was first to report the news.

According to law enforcement, police were called to a home around 11:30 p.m. on Tuesday (Dec. 10) in response to an argument between a man and a woman. “The investigation determined it was a domestic incident,” which led to the arrest of the Bravo star (whose full legal name is James Kennedy Georgiou), the Burbank PD told Billboard.

Burbank police added that Kennedy, who has also parlayed his TV fame into a career as a successful DJ, was booked for misdemeanor domestic violence. According to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, the reality star has posted $20,000 bail. “Formal charges are pending review by the Burbank City Attorney’s office,” Burbank’s law enforcement told Billboard.

Billboard has reached out to Kennedy’s rep for comment.

The Bravolebity, who is known for his big personality and viral quips on the Emmy-winning Vanderpump Rules, is the son of model and actress Jacqueline Georgiou and music producer Andros Georgiou. The elder Georgiou previously worked with late Wham! singer George Michael, who was also Kennedy’s godfather, as discussed on the popular Bravo show. The reality program also followed the DJ’s struggle with alcohol and his sobriety journey, as well as his relationship with his girlfriend Ally Lewber. (Burbank PD did not identify the woman in its statement; Billboard has reached out to Lewber for comment.)

Bravo announced in late November that Vanderpump Rules — which Kennedy joined in season two — would be returning in 2025 for its 12th season with a whole new cast.

The NFL has made it clear that the partnership between Jay-Z, Rocnation & the NFL still stands. Recently Hov was accused of assaulting a 13-year-old girl with Diddy back in 2000. The NY legend quickly came out with a response to the accusations saying, ““My only heartbreak is for my family. My wife and I will have to sit our children down, one of whom is at the age where her friends will surely see the press and ask questions about the nature of these claims, and explain the cruelty and greed of people. I mourn yet another loss of innocence. Children should not have to endure such at their young age. It is unfair to have to try to understand inexplicable degrees of malice meant to destroy families and human spirit.”

At a press conference in Irving, Texas, on Wednesday, Goodell talked about the league’s connection with Carter and Roc Nation. Emphasizing that the relationship between the NFL and Roc Nation proceeds, “is not changing… including our preparations for the next Super Bowl. We are aware of the civil allegations and Jay Z’s really strong response to that,” Goodell said. “We know obviously that litigation is happening. But from our standpoint, our relationship is not changing with them, including our preparations for the next Super Bowl.”

The NFL’s partnership with Jay-Z has made the Super Bowl Halftime performances much more entertaining. Having artists such as Rihanna, Dr.Dre, The Weeknd, & now for this year’s Super Bowl, Hip-Hop’s” MVP” Kendrick Lamar. Many fans wanted Lil Wayne to perform at this year’s Super Bowl because it was held in New Orleans, his hometown. Despite the ups and downs, Lamar is coming off a successful year and is riding high after the release of his critically acclaimed project, GNX.

The superstar’s publicist, Yvette Noel-Schure, seemingly responded to a fan account’s post via X on Thursday (Dec. 12) that claimed Bey’s upcoming performance is”expected to be 20 minutes long, NFL will give Beyoncé more time than the conventional Superbowl time 12-15 minutes.”

In response, Noel-Schure simply wrote, “Untrue. Her performance will not be 20 minutes.” See the response here. Billboard has reached out to her to confirm her response, but had not heard back at the time of publication.

Earlier this week, Bey dropped a 30-second teaser for the upcoming performance, in which she lights up a cactus Christmas tree dressed in an all-white outfit and cowboy hat. “HALFTIME SHOW,” reads a title card at the end of the video, which was shared to Bey’s YouTube channel. “THIS CHRISTMAS HOUSTON, TX.”

The event will mark the “Texas Hold ‘Em” star’s first time performing since the release of her Billboard 200-topping album Cowboy Carter back in March.

The Texans vs. Ravens match, which will take place at Bey’s home city’s NRG Stadium, won’t be the only game NFL broadcasts on Christmas Day. The Kansas City Chiefs and Pittsburgh Steelers will start the day off at 1 p.m. ET before the next game begins at 4:30 p.m. ET. Both games — and Bey’s halftime performance — will stream live on Netflix, with regional broadcasts and mobile access via NFL+.
