Judge Denies Jay-Z’s Request To Dismiss Rape Lawsuit

It seems Jay-Z will have to defend his name in a court of law. A judge has denied his request to dismiss a rape lawsuit against him.

As spotted on Vulture, the Brooklyn, N.Y., native did not receive favorable news regarding a recent legal filing against him. On Thursday (Dec. 26), Judge Analisa Torres ruled that Jane Doe can move forward with her lawsuit against Sean “Diddy” Combs and Jay-Z anonymously. While the accuser remains unidentified, the magistrate did say that Jane Doe might have to reveal her name in the future for the case to proceed.

According to the Associated Press, Judge Analisa Torres also expressed her disproval on how Jay-Z’s legal team have handled the complaint thus far. “Carter’s lawyer’s relentless filing of combative motions containing inflammatory language and ad hominem attacks is inappropriate, a waste of judicial resources, and a tactic unlikely to benefit his client. The Court will not fast-track the judicial process merely because counsel demands it,” the written order reads.

The “inflammatory language” is a direct reference to Alex Spiro’s–Jay-Z’s attorney–criticism of the plaintiff’s lawyer Tony Buzbee. In an exclusive statement to the Hollywood Reporter, the Texas-based mouthpiece commented on the judges denial to dismiss the case. “I don’t typically comment on court rulings. I will say that the coordinated and desperate efforts to attack me as counsel for alleged victims are falling flat.”

Back in October, a woman named Jane Doe filed a lawsuit against Diddy and Jay-Z claiming the two raped her at an event following the 2000 MTV Video Music Awards. She has since admitted that there were several inconsistencies with her original filing.

Beyoncé’s Mom Tina Knowles Reacts to Criticism Over Singer’s Christmas Day Halftime Show

Tina Knowles is fiercely defending her daughter Beyoncé after the pop superstar’s NFL Halftime Show performance on Christmas Day.

On Friday (Dec. 27), the proud mother took to social media to respond to the criticism surrounding Queen Bey’s stunning performance at the Baltimore Ravens vs. Houston Texans game at NRG Stadium. The 12-minute set, now available for streaming on Netflix, had generated some backlash, prompting Knowles to speak out in her daughter’s defense.

Knowles began by reposting a fan’s message on Instagram that called out those who had negative things to say about the performance.“Irrespective of whether you like Beyoncé’s music or not, it is PROOF and motivation that no matter how undeniably talented you are, people will always, ALWAYS, always have some negative ish to say,” the fan’s comment read.

In her caption, Knowles agreed with the fan, writing, “My sentiments exactly! It is mind-boggling to me that you would take your precious Christmas day and watch a performance of someone you hate and you don’t think has talent so that you can go talk ish about it later.”

She continued, “Obviously you are so obsessed with them , addicted to them , and secretly admire them , wish you could be them, that you cannot help but to watch and critique and comment and say dumb ridiculous stuff that makes you look like a joke !! So go to another channel when it’s halftime watch goofy cartoons or Bozo the clown or something you can relate to and see yourself in. Said with love.”

Knowles also reflected on her daughter’s strength, adding, “I have learned so much from her warrior spirit, of when they go low I work harder ‘No weapon formed against me shall prosper’ one ,two , three waiting for the fake bots to come’.”

She followed up with several posts celebrating the positive reactions to Bey’s performance, including a comment from Bun B, who praised the superstar’s career: “I think quietly, this entire time we’ve watched her rise. She’s probably the single most intentional performer, musician and entertainer in our culture. Beyoncé knows exactly who she is, and she understands that when she does something, things change,” the rapper said.

The Houston-born superstar’s halftime show featured songs from her latest album Cowboy Carter, a country-infused project that topped the Billboard 200 for two weeks. The performance included collaborations with Shaboozey, Post Malone, Tanner Adell, Brittney Spencer and others, showcasing tracks like “16 Carriages” to “Texas Hold ‘Em,” “Levii’s Jeans” and “Jolene.” Beyoncé’s 12-year-old daughter Blue Ivy Carter also joined her on stage as a dancer, just as she did on the Renaissance World Tour.

Following the performance, Beyoncé teased a new project set for release in 2025. In a cryptic post on social media, she shared a video of herself riding a majestic white horse while waving an American flag. The clip ended with a black screen featuring the message: “1.14.25.” She simply captioned the post with, “Look at that horse.”

CNN Accused Of “Sanitizing” Trump’s Fascist Ways Over Greenland & Canada Coverage

For all of the MAGA world’s griping about the ills of “left-wing media,” supporters of Donald Trump really should be thanking some of these supposedly left-leaning networks and publications for using soft language to water down the (alleged) consistent lies, blatant bigotry, idiocracy and general absurdity of the president-elect. From the Washington Post to the New York Times, there are a number of news outlets that are reviled by conservatives that also get blasted from the other side for needlessly normalizing Trump and his ilk by refusing to call a spade a spade, or, in Trump’s case, they refuse to call a diet fascist white nationalist idiot a diet fascist white nationalist idiot.

CNN is no different.

Over the weekend, Trump expressed renewed interest in acquiring Greenland, an autonomous Danish territory, which he had talked about wanting to purchase back in 2019.

“For purposes of National Security and Freedom throughout the World, the United States of America feels that the ownership and control of Greenland is an absolute necessity,” Trump posted on Truth Social. Trump also wants to violate a 1977 treaty by taking over the Panama Canal to reduce the high costs of ships passing through, and he recently told Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau that Canada should become a new “state” of the U.S.

Is it wild that Trump is out here talking about taking over other countries and territories (against the wishes of the leaders of said territories) in order to preserve “National Security and Freedom” in America? Hell yeah — or at least it would be if certain media outlets didn’t insist on treating Trump like he’s the new normal.

From Raw Story:

In reporting on these remarks, CNN was accused of “sanitizing” the story and “sane washing” it by reporting it as follows: “The president-elect has suggested a territorial extension into Panama, Greenland, and Canada. If he’s serious, it would rival the Louisiana Purchase.”

Election lawyer Marc Elias took to Blue Sky on Tuesday to shame the network and call it “hopelessly broken.”

“1. This ‘expansion’ would require military invasions of several allies in violation of international law. 2. It would violate several treaties. 3. The Louisiana Purchase was the sale of land by a colonial power (France). These are sovereign nations,” he said.

“So Trump wants to annex Greenland, Canada, and Panama, and invade Mexico. A whole lot of gullible people were telling me he was the antiwar, anti-imperial candidate,” remarked digital strategist Robert Cruickshank on X.

Melanie D’Arrigo of the Campaign for New York Health called out CNN for “manufacturing consent for Trump to attack and invade our allies.”

Film and television editor Michael Tae Sweeney said on Blue Sky that CNN is guilty of doing this over several years. It’s all an effort to “try to help Trump and fool their audience by lying to them.”

USA Today opinion columnist Michael J. Stern told CNN, “When one country tries to take over parts of another country it’s not ‘expansion,’ it’s an illegal act of war.” He linked it to another CNN story with the headline, “Trump is teasing US expansion into Panama, Greenland and Canada.”

Part of the reason Trump is about to be president again is that major media outlets and prominent lawmakers and other elected officials keep treating him and his antics like they are normal and acceptable. His supporters keep pretending their MAGA messiah is “anti-establishment,” but, honestly, it’s the “establishment” that they have to thank for his continued existence.

It’s not even irony, it’s just pure hypocrisy.

And it’s the American way.

‘Morrison Hotel,’ Made famous by The Doors, Goes Up in Flames in Los Angeles

The former Morrison Hotel, made famous by The Doors and their 1970 album of the same name, was significantly damaged by a fire that erupted in downtown Los Angeles on Thursday (Dec. 26).

The four-story building, which has been vacant more than a decade, burned for nearly two hours before more than 100 firefighters brought the flames under control, according to the Los Angeles Fire Department.

The Morrison Hotel was featured on the cover of The Doors’ fifth album. Celebrated music photographer Henry Diltz made the image in 1969 and said years later that it took a little trickery to pull it off.

Trending on Billboard

A hotel clerk told the band they weren’t allowed to take photos inside, but when the clerk stepped away, the group ran into the lobby and Diltz quickly got the photo looking through the window, with legendary frontman Jim Morrison in the middle.

“It was a great old wooden building with many small rooms upstairs where transients and drinkers could sleep it off on a cot for $2.50 a night!” Diltz told The Associated Press on Friday. “I think the beautiful front window with “Morrison Hotel” in red letters was the best part of it! So did The Doors!”

The album was viewed as a comeback to their roots for The Doors, coming on the heels of Morrison’s on-stage arrest at a Miami concert that saw him convicted of indecent exposure and profanity.

Morrison and The Doors would release one final album, L.A. Woman, before he was found dead in a Paris bathtub on July 3, 1971.

Los Angeles firefighters who first arrived at the blaze on Thursday found heavy flames on the building’s top floor.

Several people who were in the building escaped without injuries, including three people rescued by firefighters from the third floor, according to the department. The building’s roof collapsed, leaving its structural integrity in doubt, the department said.

The building in recent years had been used as a training site for firefighters.

Music Stocks Continue Their Losing Streak in Final Week of 2024

In a week with little news and few regulatory filings, music stocks finished the last full week of 2024 by dropping for the third consecutive week. The 20-company Billboard Global Music Index (BGMI) fell 0.6% to 2,155.51, lowering its year-to-date gain to 40.5%. The index has fallen 5.5% over three weeks after rising 14.6% over six consecutive weekly gains. Six stocks finished the week in positive territory while 13 lost ground and one was unchanged.

Two of the three major music labels were among the week’s few winners. Universal Music Group gained 1.4% to 24.70 euros ($25.75) while Warner Music Group improved 0.9% to $31.45. Elsewhere, iHeartMedia rose 1.1% to $1.91 following the company’s announcement on Monday (Dec. 23) that it completed a debt exchange that reduced its long-term debt load by $440 million and extended maturity dates.

The independent music companies all posted declines. Reservoir Media dropped 4.3% to $8.86 and Believe fell 4.0% to 13.78 euros ($14.37). All four South Korean companies lost ground, too: YG Entertainment dropped 2.6%, HYBE fell 2.5%, JYP Entertainment lost 2.0% and SM Entertainment slipped 1.6%.

Trending on Billboard

Spotify, the BGMI’s most valuable music company, dropped 0.8% to $456.48, the third consecutive week the stock has fallen. While the stock has dropped 9.9% since reaching its all-time high of $506.47 on Dec. 4, Spotify is by far the best-performing music stock of 2024. It has seen a 143% increase this year with two trading days remaining.

In other stock news, Chinese music streamer Tencent Music Entertainment (TME) fell 1.8% to $11.72. On Friday, 86Research increased TME to a “buy” rating with a $14 price target. Shares of TME are up 30.1% year to date.

The week’s biggest loser, SiriusXM, fell 8.6% to $21.13. SiriusXM’s 61.4% decline in 2024 is the second worst amongst BGMI stocks after Cumulus Media’s 86.5% drop.

Music stocks underperformed markets around the world. In the United States, the Nasdaq composite rose 0.8% and the S&P 500 gained 0.7%. In the United Kingdom, the FTSE 100 improved 0.8%. China’s Shanghai Composite Index rose 1%. South Korea’s KOSPI composite index was unchanged after declining in three of the previous four weeks.

Donald Trump Asks Supreme Court to Delay TikTok Ban

President-elect Donald Trump asked the Supreme Court on Friday to pause the potential TikTok ban from going into effect until his administration can pursue a “political resolution” to the issue.

The request came as TikTok and the Biden administration filed opposing briefs to the court, in which the company argued the court should strike down a law that could ban the platform by Jan. 19 while the government emphasized its position that the statute is needed to eliminate a national security risk.

“President Trump takes no position on the underlying merits of this dispute. Instead, he respectfully requests that the Court consider staying the Act’s deadline for divestment of January 19, 2025, while it considers the merits of this case,” said Trump’s amicus brief, which supported neither party in the case and was written by D. John Sauer, Trump’s choice for solicitor general.

Trending on Billboard

The argument submitted to the court is the latest example of Trump inserting himself in national issues before he takes office. The Republican president-elect has already begun negotiating with other countries over his plans to impose tariffs, and he intervened earlier this month in a plan to fund the federal government, calling for a bipartisan plan to be rejected and sending Republicans back to the negotiating table.

He has been holding meetings with foreign leaders and business officials at his Mar-a-Lago club in Florida while he assembles his administration, including a meeting last week with TikTok CEO Shou Chew.

Trump has reversed his position on the popular app, having tried to ban it during his first term in office over national security concerns. He joined TikTok during his 2024 presidential campaign and his team used it to connect with younger voters, especially male voters, by pushing content that was often macho and aimed at going viral.

He said earlier this year that he still believed there were national security risks with TikTok, but that he opposed banning it.

The filings Friday come ahead of oral arguments scheduled for Jan. 10 on whether the law, which requires TikTok to divest from its China-based parent company or face a ban, unlawfully restricts speech in violation of the First Amendment. The law was signed by President Joe Biden in April after it passed Congress with broad bipartisan support. TikTok and ByteDance filed a legal challenge afterwards.

Earlier this month, a panel of three federal judges on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit unanimously upheld the statute, leading TikTok to appeal the case to the Supreme Court.

The brief from Trump said he opposes banning TikTok at this junction and “seeks the ability to resolve the issues at hand through political means once he takes office.”

In their brief to the Supreme Court on Friday, attorneys for TikTok and its parent company ByteDance argued the federal appeals court erred in its ruling and based its decision on “alleged ‘risks’ that China could exercise control” over TikTok’s U.S. platform by pressuring its foreign affiliates.

The Biden administration has argued in court that TikTok poses a national security risk due to its connections to China. Officials say Chinese authorities can compel ByteDance to hand over information on TikTok’s U.S. patrons or use the platform to spread or suppress information.

But the government “concedes that it has no evidence China has ever attempted to do so,” TikTok’s legal filing said, adding that the U.S. fears are predicated on future risks.

In its filing Friday, the Biden administration said because TikTok “is integrated with ByteDance and relies on its propriety engine developed and maintained in China,” its corporate structure carries with it risk.

Producer Richard Perry’s 20 Biggest Billboard Hits

Perry produced some of the biggest and best hits on the Hot 100 in the ’70s and ’80s.

We lost one of the greats this week, when producer Richard Perry died at age 82. Like such contemporary producers as Jack Antonoff, Finneas, Daniel Nigro and Greg Kurstin, Perry was almost as famous as the artists he worked with (at least among pop music obsessives).

Perry never won a Grammy in competition, but he did receive a Trustees Award from the Recording Academy in 2015. (That’s the equivalent of a lifetime achievement award for non-performers.) The Grammys didn’t have a producer of the year, non-classical category yet in 1974, when Perry might very well have won it. (The category was introduced the following year.)

Perry was nominated in that category in both 1977 and 1978. He was nominated in other marquee Grammy categories as well – record of the year for both Nilsson’s “Without You” and Carly Simon’s “You’re So Vain” and album of the year for Nilsson Schmilssson.

Perry had producer credits on top 10 albums on the Billboard 200 spanning more than 40 years, from novelty performer Tiny Tim’s God Bless Tiny Tim in 1968 (hey, you got to start somewhere!) to Rod Stewart’s Fly Me to the Moon… The Great American Songbook Volume V in 2010.

Richard Perry’s Biggest Billboard Hits chart is based on actual performance of titles that he produced on the weekly Billboard Hot 100 (through Dec. 28, 2024). Songs are ranked based on an inverse point system, with weeks at No. 1 earning the greatest value and weeks at No. 100 earning the least. Due to changes in chart methodology over the years, eras are weighted to account for different chart turnover rates over various periods.

The news was first reported by The Hollywood Reporter.

“Taking the helm as CEO of SALXCO is a testament to what’s possible when you immerse yourself in this industry from day one,” said Unwin in a statement on her ascension. “Our company thrives because we don’t just follow culture — we help shape it through our incredible clients and their visions.”

Slaiby added that Unwin “is perfectly poised to lead our daily operations.”

In his own statement, Dion wrote, “With a deep respect for the company’s legacy and a clear vision for the future, I’m excited to build on what has been created and lead our team and artists toward new heights in the music industry.” Ramsey added that he’s “excited to be taking this next step with SALXCO and help guide the company into the future of this ever-evolving industry.”

Additional SALXCO clients include Brandy, Swedish House Mafia, French Montana, Ty Dolla $ign, Nav, Shenseea, Austin Millz and Elyanna. The company was founded in 2011 by Slaiby, longtime manager of The Weeknd.
