The Weeknd Hints at ‘The End’ of an Era With Ominous Billboards Around The World

The end is nigh. At least according to a series of ominous billboards that have popped up across the globe featuring the message “The End Is Near” that fans are speculating are part of the elaborate roll-out of The Weeknd‘s next permutation.

According to fans sightings, the messages — which are written out in six different fonts representing Abel Tesfaye’s various eras — have gone up in Los Angeles, New York, Atlanta, Paris, London and Melbourne, according to fan snaps.

In two posts on Monday (Dec. 30) teasing the tease, Tesfaye wrote “8 beautiful chapters in this story,” accompanied by a composite image featuring iconic looks from those eras — with the same TheEndIsNear branding — followed by a list of his albums. It begins with 2012’s compilation/major label debut Trilogy (which scooped up his three previous mixtapes: House of Balloons, Thursday and Echoes of Silence), followed by 2013’s Kiss Land, 2015’s Beauty Behind the Madness, 2016’s Starboy, the 2018 EP My Dear Melancholy, 2020’s smash After Hours, 2022’s Dawn FM and his upcoming sixth studio album.

In a second post, he shared a 24-second video of “The End Is Near” billboards compiled on a digital display atop a building on a busy street. At press time a spokesperson for the singer had not returned Billboard‘s request for additional information on the billboards.

Tesfaye has been teasing his next LP for months, with Hurry Up Tomorrow slated for release on Jan. 24. The set will be the third and final installment of the latest trilogy in the Weeknd’s career, following on the heels of 2020’s After Hours and 2022’s Dawn FM. To date he has released three singles from the collection, including “Dancing in the Flames,” “Timeless” with Playboi Carti and “São Paulo” featuring Anitta.

He debuted those songs and other tracks from Hurry Up Tomorrow during his one-night-only show at the Estádio MorumBIS in São Paulo, Brazil. Weeknd has planned a one-night-only gig at the Rose Bowl Stadium in Los Angeles on January 25. Earlier this month he again hinted at the major reboot, posting “New Album, New Tour, New Movie, New Everything.”

In addition to the album, Weeknd is slated to make his feature film debut in the parallel Hurry Up Tomorrow big screen psychological thriller, directed by Trey Edward Shults (It Comes At Night) and co-starring Jenna Ortega and Barry Keoghan; the film is due out on May 16.

Back in May 2023, in a W Magazine interview, Tesfaye intimated that his next studio release would be his final one as the Weeknd. “It’s getting to a place and a time where I’m getting ready to close the Weeknd chapter. I’ll still make music, maybe as Abel, maybe as The Weeknd. But I still want to kill The Weeknd. And I will. Eventually. I’m definitely trying to shed that skin and be reborn,” he said at the time. “The album I’m working on now is probably my last hurrah as The Weeknd. This is something that I have to do. As The Weeknd, I’ve said everything I can say.”

Travis Hunter, the star football player from Colorado, just signed with Lil Wayne’s Young Money APAA Sports Agency before the 2024 NFL Draft. This is a huge move for the Heisman Trophy winner, who’s been ballin’ out on the field all year. Known for being a beast on both offense and defense, Hunter has been turning heads and is now expected to go #1 overall in the NFL Draft—most likely to the New England Patriots.

Travis has always been a big fan of Lil Wayne, and teaming up with his favorite rapper for his agent is a dream come true. Hunter even thanked Weezy in his Heisman speech right before he started singing lyrics from ‘6 Foot 7 Foot’. Lil Wayne’s Young Money APAA is known for taking care of its athletes, and it’s a perfect match for Hunter, who’s not just a future NFL star but also someone who knows the importance of building a brand. With the NFL Draft right around the corner, fans are excited to see where Hunter will land. Many think the Patriots could pick him up, and he’d be a great fit with their squad. One thing’s for sure—Travis Hunter is about to change the game, both on the field and in the culture.

The Heisman trophy winner’s relationship has been in the spotlight recently, especially after videos surfaced showing his fiancée Leanna Lenee entertaining other men, leading many celebrities to encourage him to break up with her. The drama intensified when another video went viral, showing his fiancée visibly frustrated while waiting for him to finish taking pictures with fans. She confronted him, asking if he expected her to sit there all day. Despite the public scrutiny, Hunter has remained focused on his career and upcoming NFL Draft.

Morgan Wallen Surprise Drops Introspective Ballad ‘Smile’: Listen

Morgan Wallen ended 2024 on a somewhat somber note with the surprise release of the contemplative ballad “Smile” on Monday (Dec. 30). The song — written by Wallen along with Rocky Block, John Byron, Ernest Keith Smith, Ryan Vojtesak and Luis Witkiewitz — is described in a press release as being a continuation of themes established in the singer’s previous lovelorn singles, “Lies Lies Lies” and “Love Somebody.”

In the accompanying video directed by Justin Clough, Wallen plays himself gearing up to perform on a New Year’s Eve-style broadcast. Sitting nervously in his green room as the announcer teases his set, Wallen stares anxiously at a woman sitting silently across the way before getting his call. Glumly marching to the stage, Wallen appears to tune out the anxious producer’s notes about looking at the camera and remembering to smile. “People will love that,” he says as Wallen seems to ignore him completely.

Introduced as one of the “biggest pop stars in the world,” the host tells viewers that Wallen is gearing up to perform “Love Somebody,” the Billboard Hot 100 No. 1 single he released in October that is slated for his upcoming fourth studio album. Wallen pulls an Elvis Costello, though, snapping on his Field & Stream baseball hat and staring at the song’s lyrics in the Teleprompter before going rogue and playing “Smile” instead.

“I can’t remember the last time/ You looked as happy as you did tonight/ Your tipsy friend grabbed that bartender/ Gave him her phone and pulled us over there with her,” he sings over gentle acoustic guitar as the TV show’s crew freaks out about the bait-and-switch while the prompter reads “[OFF SCRIPT].”

Wallen is unbothered, though, crooning the song’s gentle, pleading chorus, “It was good to see you smile/ Girl you know it’s been a while/ It was good to see you smile/ Even if it was just for the picture,” lamenting that after all the good times what’s left is only happy memories caught in photos.

Though it was an unplanned detour, Wallen’s sincerity appears to click, with the network brass turning from exasperated to elated as they watch the viewing numbers spike during the performance. As he sings about capturing a precious moment in time, Wallen’s love comes out to watch the performance, with the two sharing a last, longing look before she walks away.

“Smile” is the third single Wallen has release this year from his as-yet-untitled fourth album, the follow-up to 2023’s Billboard 200 No. 1 double LP One Thing at a Time.

New York Giants fans are lost even after a surprise win. Big Blue ended their losing streak but seemingly lost out on getting the No. 1 draft pick.

As reported on ESPN, the East Rutherford, N.J.,-based organization played their last game of the 2024-2025 NFL season. On Sunday (Dec. 29), they faced the Indianapolis Colts and beat them 45-33. While this ended the team’s very challenging season on a bright note, this cost the New York Giants what seemed to be a lock at the No. 1 spot for the forthcoming NFL Draft. As a result of their victory and the Oakland Raiders and Jacksonville Jaguars also winning their final games, there is a major shake up with the order of the draft.

With the close of the season, the New England Patriots now have the first pick with the Tennessee Titans at two, the Cleveland Browns at three, the New York Giants at four and the Jacksonville Jaguars at five. According to several football analysts and insiders, Travis Hunter is expected to be the No.1 draft pick by the New England Patriots. The 2024 Heisman Trophy winner had a spectacular college season by playing over 1,400 snaps on both sides of the ball. Other notable college players hitting the draft include Cam Ward, Shedeur Sanders and Ashton Jenty.

Charli XCX and Taylor Swift Help Lift UK Music Streams to Record High – But Proposed AI Regulations Threaten Growth

LONDON — Proposed changes to U.K. copyright law that would allow tech companies to freely use songs for AI training without permission threaten to place the country’s status as a “world music power” at risk, record labels trade body BPI has warned.

In 2024, hit records by Charli XCX, Sabrina Carpenter, Coldplay and Taylor Swift helped lift the United Kingdom’s streaming market to a record high with just under 200 billion music tracks streamed across the 12 months, up 11% year-on-year, according to year-end figures released Tuesday (Dec. 31) by BPI.

Overall recorded music consumption across streaming and physical album sales rose by a tenth (9.7%) on 2023’s total to 201 million equivalent albums, marking a decade of uninterrupted growth, reports the organization, which represents over 500 independent record labels, as well as the U.K. arms of the three majors: Universal Music Group, Sony Music Entertainment and Warner Music Group.

Trending on Billboard

However, the success of the U.K. music business is being challenged on multiple fronts, including intensifying competition from other global markets and proposed regulations around the use of artificial intelligence (AI), says BPI.

The proposed AI guidelines were announced by the British government two weeks ago (Dec. 17) as part of a 10-week consultation on how copyright-protected content, such as music, can lawfully be used by tech companies to train generative AI models. Among them is a controversial new data mining exception that would allow developers to use copyrighted songs for AI training, including commercial purposes, but only in instances where rights holders have not reserved their rights.

BPI chief executive Jo Twist said the proposed opt out mechanism was the “wrong way to realise the exciting potential of AI” and places the U.K.’s music and creative industries at risk by allowing “international tech giants to train AI models on artists’ work without payment or permission.”

“The U.K. remains a world music power, but this status cannot be taken for granted,” said Twist in a statement accompanying Tuesday’s year-end figures. She said that in order to continue to thrive, the U.K. music business needs “a supportive policy environment that puts the focus on human artistry and enables continued investment in the next generation of British talent.”

Of the current generation, more than 20 British groups and solo acts topped the U.K. albums chart in 2024, although Charli XCX and Coldplay were the only homegrown artists in the year’s top 10 best-selling artist albums list, occupying the eighth and ninth positions with Brat and Moon Music, respectively. Veteran British American rock band Fleetwood Mac had the year’s seventh most popular album with their compilation 50 Years – Don’t Stop

Topping the year-end albums list was Taylor Swift’s The Tortured Poets Department, which has sold over 783,000 equivalent units since its release in April – the most for any artist release in a calendar year since 2017, reports BPI. The Tortured Poets Department was one of four albums by Swift to feature among the year’s 20 biggest titles alongside 1989 (Taylor’s Version), Lover and Folklore.

In total, female artists accounted for six of the top 10 and half of the 20 biggest selling artist albums in the U.K. last year with hit releases by Sabrina Carpenter, Billie Eilish, Chappell Roan and Olivia Rodrigo helping make it a landmark year for women.

Female artists also spent an unprecedented 34 weeks at No. 1 on the United Kingdom’s official singles chart, largely driven by Carpenter, who spent 21 weeks at the top with her three hit singles: “Espresso, “Please Please Please” and “Taste.” The best-selling single in the U.K. last year was Noah Kahan‘s “Stick Season,” which topped the U.K. charts for seven weeks, followed by Benson Boone‘s “Beautiful Things.”

Vinyl helps physical album sales return to growth

In terms of formats, streaming now makes up 88.8% of music sales in the United Kingdom, a marginal 1.1% rise on 2023’s figure and more than double streaming’s share of the U.K. market six years ago, reports BPI.

Meanwhile, physical sales experienced year-on-year growth for the first time since 1994 with vinyl and CD album purchases up 1.4% to 17.4 million units. Driving the resurgence in physical formats was a 17th consecutive annual rise in vinyl album sales which grew by just over 9% to 6.7 million units, marking a three-decade high.

The year’s most popular vinyl album was Swift’s The Tortured Poets Department, which sold more than 111,000 vinyl copies, followed by a 30th anniversary reissue of Oasis‘ debut Definitely Maybe. Other top-selling vinyl titles included Eilish’s Hit Me Hard And Soft, Fontaines D.C.Romance, The Cure‘s Songs Of A Lost World and Charli XCX’s Brat.

CD sales fell 2.9% year-on-year to 10.5 million units, representing a significant slowdown on the 19% drop recorded in 2022 and the almost 7% slide in sales experienced in 2023. Digital album sales dropped almost 6% to 3.3 million units.

BPI’s preliminary year-end report doesn’t include financial sales data. Instead, it uses Official Charts Company data to measure U.K. music consumption in terms of volume. The London-based organization will publish its full year-end report, including recorded music revenues, later this year.

The U.K. is the world’s third-biggest recorded music market behind the U.S. and Japan with sales of $1.9 billion in 2023, according to IFPI. It is also the second-largest exporter of recorded music worldwide behind the U.S.

Tougher competition from other international markets, including Latin America and fast-growing countries like South Korea, has seen the U.K.’s share of the global recorded music market shrink over the past decade, however.

In 2015, artists from the United Kingdom cumulatively accounted for 17% of global music streams, according to BPI export figures. That figure now stands at 10% with U.K. artists accounting for just nine of the top 40 tracks streamed in the country last year – the highest being “Stargazing” by Myles Smith at number 12.

“From Coldplay, and Charli XCX, to The Last Dinner Party, and Myles Smith, there were plenty of examples of U.K. music success stories in 2024. But there are also rising challenges for domestic talent in a rapidly changing and hyper-competitive global music economy,” said BPI’s Jo Twist.

“By meeting the growing global challenge head-on, tackling challenges around AI, copyright and streaming fraud, and encouraging consumers towards viable models, like paid streaming subscriptions, we can help to ensure that the value of British music is protected and that our industry can continue to grow and flourish at home and around the world,” she said.

Tina Knowles took those criticizing Beyoncé for her Christmas halftime show on Netflix to task online, calling it “mind-boggling.”

Critics of the A Cowboy Carter Christmas concert performed by Beyoncé on Christmas Day got a hefty rebuke from her mother, Tina Knowles, online. The superstar singer’s mother shared a post on Instagram from a fan that declared that “people will always, ALWAYS, always have some negative ish to say” about her daughter no matter the circumstances. Knowles then decided to add her own comments.

“Repost: My sentiments exactly!” she began in the caption. “It is mind-boggling to me that you would take your precious Christmas day and watch a performance of someone you hate and you don’t think has talent so that you can go talk ish about it later. Obviously you are so obsessed with them, addicted to them, and secretly admire them, wish you could be them, that you cannot help but to watch and critique and comment and say dumb ridiculous stuff that makes you look like a joke!!

“So go to another channel when it’s halftime watch goofy cartoons or Bozo the clown or something you can relate to and see yourself in,” Knowles continued, adding: “Said with love. PS I have learned so much from her warrior spirit, of when they go low I work harder ‘No weapon formed against me shall prosper’ one, two, three waiting for the fake bots to come.”

The 13-minute concert performance took place at halftime between the Baltimore Ravens and the Houston Texans at NRG Stadium in her hometown of Houston. “I’m so honored to be in Texas right now. It’s only right that we do ‘Texas Hold ‘Em’ for the first time in Houston, Texas on Christmas,” Beyoncé told the crowd. The 32-time Grammy Award winner performed songs with country artist Shaboozey and Post Malone and was joined by her daughter Blue Ivy Carter on the field.

The performance was a high moment for Netflix, which livestreamed that game and the previous tilt between the Kansas City Chiefs and Pittsburgh Steelers earlier that afternoon as the first-ever NFL games to air on the platform. An estimated 27 million viewers tuned in to the live show, which is now available for those who missed it as a standalone special, Beyoncé Bowl.

Chappell Roan Closes Out 2024 With a Run-Down of Her Most ‘Iconique’ Looks Of the Year

It’s an understatement to say that Chappell Roan had a huge 2024. But as the hours ticked down to 2025, the singer was in a reflective mood on Monday (Dec. 30) in an Instagram post in which she ran down her top 10 personal ranking of her most “Iconic” looks of the year. The singer also noted in the caption of her post that “it’s my OPINION!!!!! + why yes, I do consider myself to be iconique.”

The number one spot is, of course, Roan’s joint-smoking, green-skinned Lady Liberty getup from this summer’s Governors Ball Festival in New York in June. Roan memorably emerged from a gigantic apple, her skin covered in green paint, with a spiky silver tiara topping off the ensemble.

Trending on Billboard

Number two was her pig-nosed look from a Grammy afterparty in which she channeled the “Good Luck, Babe” single cover art, down to the deep red dress. Coming in at three was the pink prom dress, stacked red hair style from the singer’s NPR Tiny Desk show, followed by the Medieval warrior queen get-up she rocked at this year’s MTV VMAs, where she famously clashed with a photographer; she alluded to that incident by captioning the shot “vma carpet (triggered).”

The white latex outfit reading “EAT ME” from her Coachella weekend one set came in at number five, followed by the full Roan of Arc suit of armor from her 2024 VMA performance and the colorful butterfly weekend ‘fit from the second Coachella weekend. At number eight was the chilly white swan outfit she wore in June during an appearance on The Tonight Show, with her lucha libre-inspired blue and pink costume from her mind-blowing Lollapalooza day set taking the ninth spot.

Rounding out the list was an equally over-the-top ensemble Roan wore on The Late Show With Stephen Colbert for her late night debut in February, which found her sitting in a giant heart while wearing a frilly, bedazzled white Victorian mini dress.

Roan is a six-time nominee at the upcoming Grammy Awards (Feb. 1), where she is in the mix for best new artist, album of the year for her breakthrough LP The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess, as well as song and record of the year for “Good Luck, Babe!”

The last 12 months have been an emotional rollercoaster to say the least. Skillz has brought back his popular year end recap with the “2024 Rap Up.”

As spotted on Hip Hop N More Richmond, VA native has resurrected his year in review series. Back in 2002 the “B-Boy Document 99” MC reviewed all the happenings in the culture and beyond over Common’s “Come Close” instrumental. For the next two decades he treated us to yearly installments that became synonymous with the last week in December. Eventually Uncle Murda adopted (read: stole) the idea which left Skillz with a bitter taste leading him to drop the tradition in 2021.

Thankfully he is back with a surprise edition with an accompanying video treatment. From the opener Skillz let us know that he was paying attention to all of the year’s biggest moments. “I’ve been gone for a minute now. I’m back with the Rap Up / It was crazy ass yesterday so you know I’m about to act up / And it starts right now / It’s about to go down/ Usher, the homie went crazy on that Super Bowl stage / Hey, and every song was bop/then ya’ll came for Jermaine in his lollypop socks” he raps.

Kourtney Kardashian and Travis Barker Post Sweet Holiday Pic With Whole Fam, Including Baby Rocky

The whole Barker/Kardashian crew slipped into their holiday finest last week for a Christmas photo shoot featuring Kourtney Kardashian and Travis Barker‘s kids, including the couple’s 13-month-old son, Rocky.

The blended family is posted up in front of a Christmas tree in a series of snaps posted by Kardashian on Monday (Dec. 30), captioned, “‘Twas the night before Christmas.” Kardashian is in the center of the main shot, with her arm draped around son Reign Disick, 10 — the youngest of her three children with ex Scott Disick — who is killing the Christmas fashion with baggy zebra-print pants and a black bomber jacket.

Right next to her is Blink-182 drummer Barker, who is holding up and giving a sweet kiss on the cheek to baby Rocky, whose face is disguised by a heart emoji. Like his rocker dad, Rocky is kitted out in an all-black ensemble too. Also in the mix are Barker’s son Landon, 21, as well as stepdaughter Atiana De La Hoya, 25, Kardashian’s daughter, Penelope Disick, 12, and eldest son Mason Disick, 15, who is just in front of family friend Carl Dawson.

Trending on Billboard

Barker’s eldest daughter with ex Shanna Moakler, 19-year-old Alabama Barker, was not featured in the shot; TMZ reported on Monday that the aspiring singer decided to give up vaping cold turkey to take care of her voice and after not feeling well recently she was transported to a local hospital, where experts said she was suffering from nicotine withdrawal.

The photo roll featured a sweet image from behind of Barker holding Rocky while staring at the Christmas lights, in addition to Kourtney’s sister, Kendall Jenner, singing karaoke while wearing a Santa hat and an all-white outfit. There is also a glam shot of Kourtney with sister Kim Kardashian, mom Kris Jenner with longtime love Corey Gamble and a series of photo booth snaps of the family goofing off.

Last week, Kourtney posted a roll of pics with Travis in which she dressed as Mrs. Claus while they snuggled and listened to some favorite from Nirvana and Frank Sinatra on vinyl.

Fatboy Slim Admits to Losing His ‘Passion for Making Music’

Don’t expect new music music from veteran electronic producer Fatboy Slim (aka Norman Cook) any time soon, with the artist revealing that live shows have taken over as his main focus in recent years.

Cook, who began his professional musical career as a member of indie rock outfit The Housemartins in the ’80s, has been an electronic producer since his work with Beats International at the advent of the ’90s, ultimately going solo as Fatboy Slim in 1996.

Though massively popular in his native U.K., Cook’s success also extended globally, with his breakthrough record – 1998’s You’ve Come a Long Way, Baby – reaching No. 34 on the Billboard 200, and third single “Praise You” hitting No. 36 on the Hot 100. However, he’s been largely absent from the charts for most of the past two decades, with his 2004 album Palookaville arriving as his last studio album to date.

Trending on Billboard

Instead, Cook has largely turned his focus towards his live show, though new music does arrive sporadically. In 2024 alone, Cook released the singles “Role Model” and “Bus Stop Please”, which were his first new tracks since 2022’s “Speed Trials on Acid” with Carl Cox.

Speaking to British publication The Sun’s Bizarre column recently, Cook explained that his output has slowed dramatically due a lack of passion for creating new material.

“My last two singles just came out of a live show,” he explained. “They were both things that I made just to play on the side. I had tunes that nobody else had in my set. And that kind of caught on with people when we worked out that we could clear the samples and release them.

“The thing is, you can’t make music unless you’re absolutely passionate about it and it drives you from the moment you wake up in the morning,” he added. “I just don’t seem to feel like that any more. I feel like that about DJing and about putting on things like this, but I’ve kind of lost my passion for making music.”

In 2010, Cook collaborated with Talking Heads frontman David Byrne for Here Lies Love, a joint concept and soundtrack album about Imelda Marcos, the former first lady of the Philippines. To date, this is the closest thing he’s come to making a new full-length record, though he admits to struggling with a sense of obligation alongside his live sets.

“For five years, I tried to beat myself up about it and go, ‘You should be doing this’, but then I thought, ‘Well, everybody likes my DJing and I enjoy that more, so I’ll do that’,” he continued. “I’m hoping that one day the passion will come back.”
