2025 will be a year marked by a moment that went viral on the internet: that of a musician who swept the streets in the early mornings in Mexico City and who, with a video on TikTok, managed to connect with millions through an uplifting song, “Sueña Lindo,” and his personal story. Now, just a few months later, Macario Martínez presents his new album, If Tomorrow I’m No Longer Here, while preparing for his first concert at the Lunario of the National Auditorium on November 15.
Released on October 24 under Morrxs Tristes — two weeks after his performance on NPR‘s Tiny Desk — Si Mañana Ya No Estoy comes from a process that began several years ago, in which Martínez sought to represent the idea of fear of the future evoked by the title through the lyrics of his songs.
“I was trying to record it with many friends in various places, but in the end, it didn’t work,” Macario tells Billboard in a Zoom interview. “And then, at the end of 2022, I arrived at the Casa del Árbol studio, which is also where I was able to record ‘Sueña lindo’ and ‘Nuestra casa en el mar.’ I became very good friends with [the musicians] there, and in fact, they are currently the members of my band. Together we were able to really develop that idea.” Macario also highlights how important it has been for him to continue being accompanied by the same musicians and how, emotionally, they have been fundamental in this stage of his career.
The 11-track album — a flawless fusion of huapango-folk-rock — creates a sort of internal journey through memory, touching on human anguish in the songs “Estaba Lejos” and “Otra Vez.” It also invites reflection on the complexities of existence in the track “Si Te Mentí.”
Martínez has ingrained the sounds he heard when he lived for a time in Veracruz with his dad. There he got to know the jaranas (a string instrument mainly used in the jarocho style): “I try to blend both traditional sounds and the sounds of bands like Beach House or alternative rock sounds. I think the sound of my album is the sound I always wanted to have.”
Below, Macario Martínez breaks down five essential songs from Si Mañana Ya No Estoy. Listen to the full album here.

Honestly, the first time I heard it, I couldn’t really listen to it. Because “Azul” is a song I made in 2022 — well, I started making it in 2022. In fact, there’s a demo out there, I think, on SoundCloud. There was a version of “Azul” that was more acoustic guitar-based. It was really about feeling a lot about nature — the blue of the sky, the sea and everything. My songs are thoughts that lead you to another idea, and another. I think that’s exactly how I define it: just like [how] one day we can be thinking about something and remember something else, which leads us to another idea, another thought, another memory. I try to connect that a lot.
It also talks about the emotional side — like relationships, when you’re with someone — but somehow it ends up hurting you a little, yet you can’t change it because it’s part of you and what you’ve learned. And in the end, if nothing had happened, you wouldn’t have learned to be better, or to love yourself more.

I was very inspired by the series The Last of Us. I love putting myself in the characters’ shoes. I tried to take that level, emotionally, to think about what I would feel if I were that character. I researched the characters thoroughly and tried to write that. It also brings ideas from me, ideas from people I care about, and perhaps I have also asked myself that question at some point: “If you leave tomorrow, what would become of me?” Sometimes we are so involved with people that we develop a fear of thinking that they won’t be around forever.

“‘Stars’ talks about feeling protected, feeling loved in a moment of danger or when you’re not feeling quite well, and about having someone by your side. It talks about companionship. Sometimes the only thing we need is a hug or someone to listen to us at a certain moment, you know? And sometimes the smallest actions, even from people who are not very close to us, can make a difference and make you feel better in a situation where you’re not doing so well.”

“Pijamas” is the most different song on the album and it’s like our most indie rock song we’ve made, or that I’ve made, anyway. And I find it very fun. I really enjoy experimenting, for example, with a new genre, you know? Bringing that song as more of a rock-pop style, and I really like that.

It’s one of my favorites. It talks about protecting people’s dreams and fears, and about the idea that some are no longer in this plane and will continue to watch over you from wherever they are or from their memory.
