Azealia Banks Doubles Down on Slamming J.K. Rowling’s Anti-Trans Views

Azealia Banks took a break from her usual strategy of issuing pop cultural hot takes on Sunday (March 16) when she took aim at Harry Potter author and anti-trans advocate J.K. Rowling.

In a post on X, Banks reshared a post from a user commending Rowling’s against-the-odds rise to fame, listing out the author’s various accomplishments and challenges at different ages. Banks, for her part, decided to add a fake entry of her own, mocking Rowling’s anti-trans rhetoric while also using a slur often weaponized against the trans community.

“Maybe her husband at 27 cheated on her with a T—–licious diva,” she wrote. “And that’s why she’s dedicated every waking moment to making sure her life’s legacy is dedicated to harassing people who make up less than 1% of the global population.”

This is not the first time that Banks has actively gone after Rowling in public. Back in February, the “212” rapper posted a message aimed directly at the Potter author, asking her why she seemed to be so obsessed with talking about the trans community. “No shade @jk_rowling thanks for the follow and I love you down sis, but [trans women] are not a threat to your femininity,” she wrote at the time. “You are really too rich and legendary to keep spewing the same stuff over and over and over.”

Banks has her own history when it comes to making transphobic comments in public, including instances where she claimed that trans women are not real women and actively misinformed her followers about the realities of gender-affirming care.

Most recently, Banks was lined up to headline the queer-inclusive Milkshake Festival in Amsterdam before she was removed from the lineup after outcry from fans who pointed to the rapper’s past anti-LGBTQ+ comments. “It is clear to us that we made a mistake and that we have overlooked essential information. We sincerely apologize for this,” the festival’s organizers wrote in a statement following Banks’ removal from the lineup. “The safety of our visitors, our team, the artists, and crew will always be our main priority.”
