NCT’s Jaehyun Drops Debut Solo Album, Haunting Video For ‘Smoke’ Single

Written by on August 26, 2024

NCT‘s Jaehyun dropped the video for the first single from his just-released solo debut album, J – The First Album, which is available now digitally and on all streaming platforms. The singer also issued the focus track “Smoke” in English and Korean, a slinky R&B jam whose video finds the K-pop star battling an unseen enemy.

The black and white clip that dropped on Monday (August 26) opens with Jaehyun locking himself in his apartment and covering all the cameras on his devices and sealing the front door with tape as he breaks into a dance routine wit his crew while singing, “Just like dimming lights/ Sun is going down/ Traffic lights turn green/ When you hit the dial/ Yeah I got the, I got the, I got the, I got the/ Smoke.”

Things then get surreal when a fitful nap on the couch finds him swallowed by the cushions and ejected in a watery mess into a full-color world where he floats from the top of a skyscraper to the ground. Once back on terra firma, a third dance routine paves the way for a final soft shoe down the hallway by a version of the star in a white suit as his double continues to writhe on the couch and stare glumly at the ceiling.

“Smoke” is the third song fans have heard from the eight-track album, which also features the previously released singles “Dandelion” and “Roses,” in addition to “Flamin’ Hot Lemon,” “Completely,” “Easy” and “Can’t Get You”; the collection includes both Korean and English versions of “Smoke.”

SM Entertainment’s NCT features 26 members who are broken into six sub-NCT units —  NCT 127NCT DREAMNCT U, NCT DoJaeJung and WayV — with the full group reuniting last year for their fourth full-length album, Golden Age.
