With four No. 1 hits on the Billboard Hot 100 and 15 top 10s over her 23-year career, P!nk is undeniably a pop superstar. But at Thursday night’s (Oct. 5) Summer Carnival tour stop at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, Calif., she made a pretty strong case that she’s a rock star too.
P!nk has been playing stadiums across Europe and North America all summer, bringing along her deep catalog of hits (a 23-song setlist), her bottomless bag of cheeky neon props (lit-up grocery carts, floating bunches of bananas, dancing pairs of lips), and her inimitable stage presence (from her casual between-song banter to casually taking flight above the 70,000-person crowd).
For Thursday night’s show, she put a special emphasis on rock & roll, revealing to the crowd that she would be showcasing “the women of rock” throughout the night, as she announced her first special guest, Alanis Morissette. She would also welcome one of her opening acts, Pat Benatar & Neil Giraldo, to rejoin her onstage for a duet. And perhaps the third woman of rock was P!nk herself, who effortlessly tucked in covers of Led Zeppelin and Bob Dylan among her pop-radio-dominating setlist.
P!nk has three more dates remaining on the Summer Carnival trek: Las Vegas’ Allegiant Stadium on Saturday, Phoenix’s Chase Field on Monday, and Arlington, Texas’ Globe Life Field on Nov. 26. Warm-up acts Grouplove and DJ KidCutUp will continue for those three dates, with Brandi Carlile returning to the tour in place of Benatar & Giraldo.
Below, find Billboard‘s most rock & roll moments from P!nk’s Summer Carnival tour stop at SoFi Stadium:
-
Alanis Morissette’s Early Cameo
After performing her 2002 Missundaztood single “Just Like a Pill,” P!nk asked the audience: “You know ‘Just Like a Pill,’ but what about Jagged Little Pill?” This kicked off the night’s salute to “the women of rock,” as her band kicked into Alanis Morissette’s breakthrough hit “You Oughta Know” and the Canadian singer/songwriter emerged from backstage for a dynamic duet. This was only the fifth song in the set, and the crowd positively lost their minds as Alanis and P!nk traded lyrics – and P!nk did too, dropping down to her knees to bow at the feet of the ’90s rock goddess.
-
A Bob Dylan Ballad
In one of the slower moments of the night, P!nk sat down at the piano to channel Bob Dylan by way of Adele, covering the Dylan-written ballad “Make You Feel My Love,” as she has throughout the Summer Carnival tour. The love song was Adele’s final single from her 2008 debut album, 19, and P!nk said the British superstar’s cover is what made her fall in love with it.
-
A Salute to Pat Benatar
To mark the final night on tour for opening act Pat Benatar & Neil Giraldo, P!nk invited the married duo back onstage for a mash-up of “Just Like Fire” with “Heartbreaker,” Benatar’s first top 40 hit on the Billboard Hot 100. The audience had heard Benatar & Giraldo close their set with the heart-pumping hit earlier in the night, but it was magical to hear P!nk and Pat’s powerhouse vocals together, alongside the pop star’s formidable trio of backup singers.
-
A Led Zeppelin Face-Melter
Don’t be fooled by P!nk quietly starting her cover of Led Zeppelin’s “Babe, I’m Gonna Leave You” with just her guitarist on a pair of stools at center-stage. The full band (and the full stadium light show) kicked in for each rocking interlude, bookended by P!nk’s yearning-turned-wailing Robert Plant homage.
-
A ‘Free Bird’ Request
“Did someone just yell ‘Free Bird’?” P!nk asked incredulously between songs. “It really is a rock & roll night! Who thought someone would yell ‘Free Bird’ at P!nk? We made it!”
-
P!nk Takes to the Skies
In the end, the most rock & roll moment of all was P!nk’s trademark aerial acrobatics. Her airborne skills were on display throughout the show, but the “So What” finale that saw her flying like Peter Pan around the circumference of SoFi Stadium was the most mind-bending. As she appropriately sings in the chorus: “So what? I’m still a rock star.”
