Taylor Swift Creates History on Australia’s Charts

It’s a Taylor Swift sweep on Australia’s charts, as The Tortured Poets Department (via Universal) and “Fortnight” blast to No. 1. Tortured Poets opens at the summit of the ARIA Albums Chart, published Friday, April 26, for her lucky 13th leader in these parts. With that result, Swift boasts the most No. 1 albums for a solo female artist in ARIA chart history, moving ahead of Madonna to claim outright third place. The all-time leader among acts with the most chart-topping albums in Australia is Jimmy Barnes with 15 as a solo act (he had another five with Cold Chisel), followed by the Beatles with 14. Explore See latest videos, charts and news See latest videos, charts and news Meanwhile, Swift scoops the chart double with “Fortnight” featuring Post Malone opening at No. 1 on the ARIA Singles Chart, for her 12th leader on that tally. With a dozen singles chart leaders, Swift sits third on the all-time list of artists here, trailing Elvis Presley (No. 14) and The Beatles (No. 26). At the same time, she becomes the first artist to hold the entire top 10 on the singles chart, and establishes a new mark for the most singles in the top 50, with 29 on the current frame. That creams the old record of 20, set by Drake in 2021 and by herself in 2023. Trending on Billboard All 31 tracks from the double album impact the top 100, with “Robin” the lowest at No. 55. Three older songs sit in the top 100 (“Cruel Summer,” “Anti Hero” and “Lover”), meaning Swift has more than one-third of all songs in the top 100 (34). The previous record was 32 in one week, ARIA reports, held by Michael Jackson and Taylor. Swift, whose The Eras Tour visited Australia in late 2023 for seven shows, is the only artist in ARIA history to replace themselves at No. 1 on the national albums tally. She has done it three times, including this month with Tortured Poets replacing Lover (earlier, in 2023, Speak Now (Taylor’s Version) replaced Midnights; and in March 2024, Lover replaced Midnights). According to a statement issued late Friday by Universal Music Australia, Tortured Poets is the most-sold album on vinyl in ARIA history, the market’s most-streamed LP in its opening week, and the biggest album debut since Adele’s 25 in 2015. Remarkably, only two of the U.S. pop superstar’s studio or re-recorded albums have failed to reach the summit in Australia — her self-titled debut, Taylor Swift (peaking at No. 33 in 2006) and Fearless (No. 2 in 2008). Fearless (Taylor’s Version) did, however, climb the summit in 2021. In non TTPD-related ARIA Chart news, Pearl Jam bows at No. 2 with Dark Matter, the Seattle rock legends’ 12th studio album. Pearl Jam has had eight No. 1 albums in Australia: Vs. in 1993, Vitalogy in 1994, No Code in 1996, Yield in 1998, Binaural in 2000, Riot Act in 2002, Backspacer in 2009 and Lightning Bolt in 2013. Dark Matter is the followup to 2020’s Gigaton, which peaked at No. 3.

Eminem Announces New Album ‘The Death Of Slim Shady’ With Bloody Teaser

Shady’s back, and he’s hinting that it’s for the last time. Eminem teases The Death Of Slim Shady (Coup De Grâce), a new album due out in summer 2024. The Rock Hall-inducted emcee breaks the news by way of a viral video in the style of real crime show Unsolved Mysteries, which tells a narrative of how Em meets his end and asks the question, “who killed Slim Shady?” It’s a tongue-in-cheek job, and features fellow rapper 50 Cent (who declares “he’s not a friend, he’s a psychopath”), vintage footage of the Detroit rapper, a bloody knife, and a pixelated, bearded Em in the hot seat. Explore Explore See latest videos, charts and news See latest videos, charts and news “Through his complex, tongue twisting and oft criticized rhymes, the blonde anti-hero known as Slim Shady has had no shortage of enemies,” explains the trench-coated narrator of the parody program, Detroit Murder Files. “The same rude lyrics and controversial antics might have ultimately led to his demise.” The Death Of Slim Shady is the followup to the rapper’s 11th studio album from 2020, Music to Be Murdered By. That album landed at No. 1 on the Billboard 200, for Em’s historic 10th consecutive leader. Prior to that Eminem delivered another surprise with Kamikaze, which dropped in 2018 without any warning. Trending on Billboard Eminem was inducted into the Rock And Roll Hall of Fame in 2022, in a class that included Duran Duran, Eurythmics, Dolly Parton, Pat Benatar and Neil Giraldo, Lionel Richie and Carly Simon. Em’s longtime collaborator Dr. Dre did the honors at the Rock Hall, and it was Dre who announced that a new Eminem album was on the way, spilling the beans on late night TV last month. “Let me tell you something, let me explain something to you right now: Eminem is working on his own album which is coming out this year,” Dre said to cheers from the studio audience for Jimmy Kimmel Live, for his first late night appearance in 30 years. “And I actually talked to him and he said it okay for me to make that announcement right here on this show. So he has an album coming out, I’ve got songs on it and it’s fire. I’m actually gonna hear the entire album for the first time for tomorrow.” The Rap God has dominated our news feeds in recent days. With the 2024 NFL draft upon up, Em, a Detroit Lions superfan, teamed up with commissioner Roger Goodell for a new ad hyping the 89th annual draft, taking place in Marshall’s hometown from April 25-27. Also, the official video for Eminem’s 2004 song “Mockingbird” flew past 1 billion views earlier this week on YouTube, and the MC posted a single, powerful image on Instagram on Sunday honoring his 16th sober anniversary.

Eagles Fly Back Onto Charts With ‘To the Limit: The Essential Collection’

Eagles fly back onto Billboard’s charts with the band’s new best-of, To the Limit: The Essential Collection. The retrospective debuts at No. 9 on Top Album Sales, No. 6 on Top Rock Albums, No. 8 on Top Rock & Alternative Albums and No. 8 on Top Current Album Sales (all charts dated April 27). It also launches at No. 30 on the Billboard 200 – the group’s 12th top 40-charting effort on the tally. Explore Explore See latest videos, charts and news See latest videos, charts and news Billboard’s Top Album Sales chart ranks the top-selling albums of the week based only on traditional album sales. The chart’s history dates back to May 25, 1991, the first week Billboard began tabulating charts with electronically monitored piece count information from SoundScan, now Luminate. Pure album sales were the sole measurement utilized by the Billboard 200 albums chart through the list dated Dec. 6, 2014, after which that chart switched to a methodology that blends album sales with track equivalent album units and streaming equivalent album units. For all chart news, follow @billboard and @billboardcharts on both Twitter and Instagram. Top Rock Albums and Top Rock & Alternative Albums rank, respectively, the week’s most popular rock, and rock and alternative albums by equivalent album units. Top Current Album Sales ranks the week’s top-selling new/current albums (non-catalog/older titles). Trending on Billboard To the Limit: The Essential Collection sold 7,000 copies in the U.S. in the week ending April 18 (as reflected on the charts dated April 27). Physical sales comprise 6,500 of the album’s first-week sales (5,000 on CD and 1,500 on vinyl) while digital download sales comprise 500. At No. 1 on Top Album Sales, Beyoncé’s Cowboy Carter rises two spots to capture its second week atop the list (28,000 sold; up 37%). The album’s physical edition (on CD and vinyl) became widely available to all retailers during the tracking week, after previously been sold exclusively through the artist’s webstore. Linkin Park’s first greatest hits album, Papercuts, debuts at No. 2 on Top Album Sales with 20,500 copies sold. The album’s sales were bolstered by its availability across eight vinyl variants, as well as a CD, cassette and digital download. It’s the 11th top 10-charting effort on Top Album Sales for the band. TOMORROW X TOGETHER’s minisode 3: TOMORROW falls 1-3 in its second week with 19,000 sold (down 82%). Lana Del Rey’s Did You Know That There’s a Tunnel Under Ocean Blvd re-enters Top Album Sales at No. 4 with 10,000 sold (797%), largely from sales of a new vinyl variant, an “festival orange”-colored edition. Maggie Rogers’ Don’t Forget Me opens at No. 5 with 10,000 sold, marking the artist’s third top 10-charting effort. Its sales were supported by its availability across eight physical iterations (among them were two signed editions) and a digital download. Noah Kahan’s Stick Season surges 28-6 with nearly 10,000 sold, following the release of the Stick Season (We’ll All Be Here Forever) deluxe edition across four vinyl variants and on CD. The deluxe set was originally released on June 9, 2023, as a digital download and streaming album. Mark Knopfler is back on Top Album Sales with his first new entry since 2018, as his latest studio effort, One Deep River, starts at No. 7 with 8,000 copies sold. It’s his first entry on the list since his last studio album Down the Road Wherever debuted and peaked at No. 6 on the Dec. 1, 2018-dated list. Rounding out the top 10 of the new Top Album Sales chart are Taylor Swift’s chart-topping Lover (9-8 with nearly 8,000; up 4%), Eagles’ To the Limit at No. 9 and Swift’s former leader 1989 (Taylor’s Version) (holding at No. 10 with nearly 7,000; up 2%). In the week ending April 18, there were 1.117 million albums sold in the U.S. (down 13.7% compared to the previous week). Of that sum, physical albums (CDs, vinyl LPs, cassettes, etc.) comprised 828,000 (down 14.1%) and digital albums comprised 289,000 (down 12.4%). There were 422,000 CD albums sold in the week ending April 18 (down 19.6% week-over-week) and 401,000 vinyl albums sold (down 7.5%). Year-to-date CD album sales stand at 7.121 million (down 31.9% compared to the same time frame a year ago) and year-to-date vinyl album sales total 7.259 million (down 49.9%). Overall year-to-date album sales total 19.293 million (down 37.3% compared to the same year-to-date time frame a year ago). Year-to-date physical album sales stand at 14.454 million (down 42.5%) and digital album sales total 4.839 million (down 14.7%).

Jelly Roll Pulls Madeline Merlot on Stage in Detroit to Sing Her Uncredited ‘Kill a Man’ Verse: ‘Such a Fan of Hers’

Jelly Roll “righted a wrong” to a fellow performer and offered up a brand new song during a concert Wednesday night (April 24) on the eve of the NFL Draft in Detroit. Fresh off his three CMT Music Awards earlier in the month, Jelly veered from the night’s planned setlist at the Fillmore Detroit to add “Kill a Man,” a track from his chart-topping 2023 album Whitsitt Chapel. He explained to the crowd that the night’s opening act — Canadian singer-songwriter Madeline Merlot — had sung backup on the recording but wasn’t credited because, “I didn’t know if she’d want to be associated with my white trash ass.” The two are on the same label (BBR Music Group), and Jelly Roll pronounced himself “such a fan of hers and her voice. I love everything about you, Miss Madeline Merlo.”  He then invited her on stage to perform the song with him, letting her take lead on the second verse.  Trending on Billboard Merlo, who’s been releasing music since 2014, was a second season contestant on NBC’s writing competition show Songland. Her most recent EP, Slide, came out during 2022, while a new single, “Time + Faith,” was released last September and reached No. 6 on Billboard Canada’s Country Songs chart. Jelly Roll also used the special small-venue show — dubbed The Night Before, but not an official NFL Draft event — to preview a brand new song, “Liar,” a muscular rock track that he said was destined for his next album. He and his eight-piece band muffed the opening — “We’ve never done this before, so… we’re figuring it out,” he noted — but started over and made their way through on the second attempt. “Should I put it on the new album or what, Detroit?,” thes singer teased afterwards, to unanimous approval from the 3,000 fans in attendance.  He also urged those fans to post videos of him performing the song online immediately so that his wife, Bunnie XO, who was on the West Coast taping episode of her Dumb Blonde podcast, “will see it before I get off stage.” The rest of Wednesday’s show — which was introduced by Public Enemy hype man Flavor Flav — included Jelly Roll hits such as “Dead Man Walking,” “Halfway to hell,” “Smoking Section,” “Son of a Sinner,” “Bottle and Mary Jane,” “She,” “Wild Ones,” “Same Asshole” and “Need a Favor,” plus a rendition of Toby Keith’s “Should’ve Been a Cowboy” in tribute to the late country icon. It also featured his usual medley of rap favorites by Eazy-E, Eminem, Outkast and Biz Markie.  The Detroit concert presented by Audacy’s WYCD served as a warm-up for Jelly Roll’s Stagecoach festival performance on Friday (April 26). He also has dates currently booked into October, including his own Beautifully Broken Tour with Warren Zeiders and Alexandra Kay and a pair of stadium shows with Morgan Wallen in Tampa on July 11-12.
