Backwoodz Studioz founder and rapper billy woods has announced a new album: Golliwog is out May 9. The lead single is a collaboration with producer Kenny Segal called “Misery.” Check it out below.
Discussing his new album in a statement, woods said, “When I was nine years old I wrote a story about an evil golliwog. My mother read it and told me it was overly derivative and needed some work. Here we are.”
In addition to Segal, Golliwog has production from the Alchemist, El-P, Shabaka Hutchings, DJ Haram, Conductor Williams, and others, along with guest verses from Armand Hammer’s Elucid, Definitive Jux alumnus Despot, New Orleans rapper Cavalier, and more.
Golliwog will follow woods’ two standout collaborative projects from 2023: Maps (with Kenny Segal) and We Buy Diabetic Test Strips (with Elucid). Read about Maps at No. 14 in Pitchfork’s “The 100 Best Albums of the 2020s So Far.”
