John Mulaney Doesn’t Understand Chappell Roan’s ‘Hot to Go!’ Trend in Hilarious New ‘SNL’ Promo

Written by on November 1, 2024

John Mulaney is not up to date on TikTok trends.

The comedian is set to host this weekend’s Saturday Night Live episode with Chappell Roan as the musical guest, and the duo appeared in a new promo released on Thursday (Oct. 31). In the clip, the duo stand alongside SNL cast member Ego Nwodim, who excitedly suggests that the trio can “do the thing.”

When Mulaney expresses confusion, Nwodim refers to the popular TikTok trend in which one participant says “I hope she does ‘Hot to Go!,’ in reference to Roan’s The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess hit. However, in the trend, usually the scene jokingly cuts to something other than a Roan performance of “Hot to Go!”

Mulaney, still confused, tells Nwodim to “just ask” Roan to sing “Hot to Go!,” as she’s standing right next to them. “He doesn’t get it, girl,” Roan interjects, as she and Nwodim walk away, leaving Mulaney alone.

Saturday’s show will mark Roan’s SNL debut. The singer appeared to tease her next era earlier this month in an Instagram post in which she shared some selfies and hinted at the follow-up to her debut breakthrough LP. “Album kinda popped off imo but it is time to welcome a hot new bombshell into the villa,” she captioned the pics, in a reference to the Love Island catchphrase welcoming new contestants that led fans to speculate that she’s working on her sophomore project.
