Westside Gunn Gives an Update on Upcoming Album After Losing Close Friend

Written by on June 12, 2024

Westside Gunn isn’t retiring from making albums after all.

After losing his close friend Infinite — aka Big Dump — in April, the Griselda Records boss has been relatively quiet on the music front. However, the rapper from Buffalo, N.Y., gave fans an update on his Instagram on June 9, saying he’s in good spirits and ready to get back to work.

“Wellness check!!!! And just know I LOVE YALL,” he started the caption. “ALOOOOOOT of ppl been hitting me in my Dms just making sure I’m good, am I ok mentally/physically bc I haven’t been on the scene like that so I’m just posting this to let y’all know I’m still SUPER FLYGOD everyday!!!!!

“I’m still the best Father I know, I’m still on my 4TH ROPE s—t, I’m still creating new ideas to attack the culture, I’ve been designing some incredible pieces and Yes I’m done with my new Album,” he continued. “physically as u can see I’m looking better than ever, mentally I think I’m focused more than I’ve ever been and since I lost Bro I look at life totally diff but even more than ever before it’s … F—K THESE N—s LORD!!! If my influence not attached or my hands isnt on it S—t trash.”

Gunn’s most recent studio album, And Then You Pray for Me, was released in 2023 and was dubbed by the rapper as his last. “[This is] going to be the last album where I take the time to say ‘this is an album,’ Westside told Rolling Stone in October. “When I was doing the Hitler Wears Hermes series, I was doing all them projects like mixtapes. I was recording the whole s—t in two, three days.”

“I’m not saying I won’t come with a five-song EP with Madlib or I won’t do a seven-song EP with Alchemist or I won’t rap,” he added. “I’ll do all of that, but making a studio album, I’m done with all that. It’s back to dumping until I don’t want to dump no more. I’m going to have fun now. It’s no more pressure.”

Other Griselda members and affiliates have been keeping busy. Conway the Machine — who’s technically not under contract with the imprint he helped start — dropped his fourth studio album, Slant Face Killah, last month, Benny the Butcher released his Def Jam debut Everybody Can’t Go back in January and in-house producer Daringer recently produced the lead single of Action Bronson’s next album.
