Magic City meets SXSW. Jermaine Dupri and Drake’s DreamCrew Entertainment premiered the Magic City: An American Fantasy at SXSW 2024 on Monday night (March 11). JD’s onboard as an executive producer of the three-part series alongside Adel “Future” Nur, Peter Nelson, Jami Gertz and Michael Mauldin.
Fans packed out Austin’s ZACH Theater for a first look at the Magic City documentary celebrating nearly four decades of the legendary Atlanta strip club, which was opened by Michael “Mr. Magic” Barney in 1985. The titillating series also explores the iconic establishment’s connection to the local hip-hop scene.
According to Variety, series producer Cole Brown and director Charles Todd took a few questions from the audience following the screening, and Brown divulged how they wanted to handle the film.

“We wanted to walk a fine line with nudity, in particular — where you can’t make a documentary about a strip club and not have any nudity, it just isn’t true to form — and you’re trying to tell the true story,” Brown said.
“At the same time, we didn’t want it to be salacious, gratuitous. We wanted to use it in such a way that you’re getting an image of what this place is. But if you go to Magic City, you see all the anatomy.”
The event continued with a nearby afterparty at the Mayfair nightclub, which was turned into a replica of Magic City to give fans as close to an authentic experience as possible. In addition to exotic dancers and performances, the famous chicken wings were imported from Atlanta to Texas.
Plenty of stars were in the building, as Atlanta hip-hop dignitaries 2 Chainz, Killer Mike and T.I. joined the So So Def CEO. Former NBA stars Carmelo Anthony and Dominique Wilkins were also in attendance.
Look for Magic City: An American Fantasy to receive a larger release later in 2024. Watch a recap of the afterparty below.
