Green Day hits No. 1 on Billboard’s Mainstream Rock Airplay chart for the eighth time, as “The American Dream Is Killing Me” jumps 3-1 on the ranking dated Nov. 25.
It reigns in its fourth week on the list, making it the third song to reach No. 1 in four weeks or fewer in 2023, following Linkin Park’s “Lost” in March and Foo Fighters’ “Rescued” in May (both four frames).
“The American Dream Is Killing Me” is the first No. 1 on Mainstream Rock Airplay for Green Day since “Oh Yeah!,” which reigned for two weeks in April 2020. The band first ruled with 14-frame leader “Boulevard of Broken Dreams” beginning in January 2005. In between “Oh Yeah!” and its most recent ruler, the trio also appeared with “Pollyanna,” which peaked at No. 27 in August 2021.
Concurrently, “The American Dream Is Killing Me” bullets at its No. 2 high on Alternative Airplay and lifts 21-18 on Adult Alternative Airplay. It reigns for a second week on the all-rock-format, audience-based Rock & Alternative Airplay chart with 9.5 million audience impressions Nov. 10-16, according to Luminate.
The song ranked at No. 26 on the most recently published multi-metric Hot Rock & Alternative Songs tally. In addition to its radio airplay, it earned 632,000 official U.S. streams in the Nov. 3-9 tracking week.
“The American Dream Is Killing Me” is the lead single from Saviors, Green Day’s 14th studio album, due Jan. 19, 2024. It’s the band’s first LP since 2020’s Father of All Motherfuckers, which debuted at No. 1 on the Top Rock & Alternative Albums ranking dated Feb. 22, 2020.
