Offset Hit With Assault Lawsuit Over Alleged 2021 Attack On Festival Security Guard

Migos rapper Offset is facing a lawsuit that claims he assaulted a security guard two years ago at Complex’s yearly Los Angeles festival.

In a complaint filed Tuesday (Nov . 7) in Los Angeles court, Daveon Clark says he was attacked by Offset (real name Kiari Kendrell Cephus) and fellow rapper YRN Murk (real name Demetrius Deandre Carter) while working private security at ComplexCon, a cultural festival hosted by Buzzfeed’s Complex Networks.

According to the lawsuit, the incident began when security attempted to restrict access to the event “for the safety of the other patrons inside.” Murk allegedly reacted to the closure by spitting on Clark, which prompted other security guards to push the rapper back.

“At this point, plaintiff was rapidly and aggressively approached by YRN Murk who began striking plaintiff,” Clark’s lawyers wrote. “Plaintiff attempted to defend himself from the onslaught when [Offset] approached him and struck him.”

The lawsuit also names Buzzfeed, which operates the event, and Contemporary Services Corp., the live events contractor that Buzzfeed hired to run security at the event. Clark says Contemporary Services “failed to prevent the attack and instead exacerbated plaintiff’s position by restraining him,” which allowed Offset and YRN Murk to “continue their physical attacks while plaintiff was prevented from protecting himself.”

Clark claims that he suffered “severe bodily injuries” during the attack and has suffered from physical pain and “mental anguish” in the two years since. In technical terms, he’s accusing Offset and Murk of assault, battery and infliction of emotional distress; he’s accusing Buzzfeed and Contemporary Services of negligence and negligent hiring for failing to stop the attack.

Reps for Offset, Buzzfeed and Contemporary Services did not return requests for comment.
