Ed Sheeran Confirms He Has His Own Grave in His Backyard

Written by on October 5, 2023

Ed Sheeran is ready for the afterlife.

The singer revealed to GQ this week that he does have a gravesite in his backyard — but it’s not a crypt. “I wouldn’t say it’s a crypt,” Sheeran explained, adding that the area is also a chapel for friends who have gotten married there. The “Shape of You” singer added that he wanted a space for people close to him who have been cremated.

“It’s a hole that’s dug in the ground with a bit of stone over it, so whenever the day comes and I pass away, I get to go in there,” he added. “People think it’s really weird and really morbid, but I’ve had friends die without wills, and no one knows what to do.”

While the grave is for the future, at present, Sheeran is fresh off the release of his new album, Autumn Variations, released via his own Gingerbread Man Records on Sept. 29. “Last autumn, I found that my friends and I were going through so many life changes. After the heat of the summer, everything either calmed, settled, fell apart, came to a head or imploded,” Sheeran explained upon announcing the album. “When I went through a difficult time at the start of last year, writing songs helped me understand my feelings and come to terms with what was going on, and when I learned about my friend’s different situations, I wrote songs, some from their perspectives, some from mine, to capture how they and I viewed the world at that time. There were highs of falling in love and new friendships among lows of heartbreak, depression, loneliness and confusion.”

Autumn Variations follows Sheeran’s Subtract, which debuted and peaked at No. 2 on the Billboard 200 albums chart upon its release earlier this year.
